Fed vs Hanescu:

Federer double faults three times in a row! in the same game! and gives a game to Hanescu.. If he plays this way to anyone else he's toast.. the FO is now a gift to him, and he's throwing it away like a lil kid

hahaha

If he was really fearless he wouldn't have been nervous and should have closed out the match.. it was 5-1 on the 3rd set.. Fed proves he fears, and shows he lied in the interview that he is fearlesss!

He was scared of closing out the match. Even sampras said he gets nervous closing out matches.

sometimes posts on these boards are clearly motivated by a simple dislike for a player, but other times aren't so clear. I'm scratching my head on these posts about Federer and the "gift" of a (remaining) draw. I think past tournaments have followed the same route - favorites losing and (sort of) no-names coming through. This happens at the French, Wimbledon, Australian and US Open. Just go back and look at the one-time grand-slam winners or finalists who never really produced again (at that level).

By picking on Federer this way makes it sound like you don't have any real reasoning for your comments besides a simple dislike. I think your opinion is great, but I'm not sure I can reasonably agree with it. Federer has won the matches he needed to win just like the rest of the guys who are left. What's so wrong with that? The guy just delivers tournament after tournament. End of story.

In the case of Federer, I would say three double faults in a row would happen because he lost focus and put his mind on something else than the ball. The same when he mishits his fore or back, and he does this once or twice per set.

"It was three double-faults in a row, wasn't it?" a sheepish Federer said. "The last time I did that was, I don't know, 8 years ago."

Good grief people!! Your standards are rediculous. I have never seen Federer get so nervous as he did today serving at 5-1, and that's the truth.

A guy's allowed to get nervous isn't he? Allowed to be human isn't he? Gosh, he is no robot. He's never been to the semis before and this tournament means a lot to him...so he got nervous and double-faulted three times.

He didn't get bored or lose concentration or anything like that. He just got nervous.

He's a human being, give him a break.

That's what I'm saying! And then you have people making excuses for him already.. Liam claims he was being arrogant and just wanted to ace the guy on 2nd serve. lol.. No! He got nervious and everyone does when closing out a set/match. I would even venture he feared !

There's no need to make an excuse. I doubt he got 'scared'. He just got nervous about getting to the semis for the first time I think. The guy is human, sheesh.

I certainly can't, with any honesty, blame him for getting nervous today. And I'm not going to.

TwistServe, you are an idiot! A misguided and somewhat naive one, but an idiot nonetheless :)

You should not waste your talent on an internet message board, you could easily get a job as a spin doctor in any govt or PR firm. Its amazing how you constantly twist every little statement and fact to your twisted point of view. Truly, a well deserved name!

Back on topic, 3 double faults in a row is one of those rare feats that I doubt any pro, let alone the world #1 in cruise mode, would make more than once their entire careers. Chalk it down to nerves, fate, luck whatever. Not that it makes any difference.

You can bet if the score was 4-5 or anything even close, Fed wouldn't have made that 2nd df, probably not even the 1st. He's the best big point player since Sampras and thats well known, regardless of how you 'twist' facts.

I think Sampras may have done it a few times, I have known him in some matches to serve a few in the first couple of games and i'm sure he may of done it 3 times in a row at some point.

I hit 3 doubles once in the first game of a match in college and lost it 6-4, 7-6. Only break in the match. I was too amped up since it was a big match, maybe Federer did the same thing and went for too much? I didn't get to see the match so maybe he was a bit nervous. I like his chances Friday, and if he gets through that I can't see anyone in the other half beating him or Nadal since Safin lost.

He said he got a little over-excited.

I thought he just got nervous. I dunno.

I figured he realized that there was no conceivable way for him to lose the match, and he sent his brain to Miller Time one game too soon.

Maybe, hehe. ;)

Here's what he said:

Q. What happened with the three double‑faults? Was it just one of those moments when you lose everything for the moment?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, it's an awkward moment. Serving for the match. Double break. You're feeling everything's in control, and that's exactly how I felt. So I really started to feel like I'm really hitting my shots beautiful, you know. My forehand was working like I wanted it to work. You know, you miss the first matchpoint. I would say crowd gets more into it. He moved on the one breakpoint, double‑fault again. Suddenly you serve two doubles and you don't feel so good anymore.

Hasn't happened to me in a long, long time, to serve so bad, you know, closing out the match. It just happens, I guess. I was too much in my zone, you know. I was ‑‑ just wanted to get it over and done with too quick. I was so happy the way I was playing, and making my first semifinals appearance, and got a little overexcited there, I guess, just for a couple minutes.

Sometimes we players need to have a brain failure, it wakes us up from the complacency we sometimes get when we beat people easily all the time. So i can relate to what happened to Feds. But i guarantee you, he will not make the same mistakes again! Better he did this now, than the next matches. He now has it out of his system, and that's great.
