Federer and Heartbreaking Losses

Federer has had more heartbreaking losses than any player in history. NO one even comes close.

2005 Australian Open semifinal
2009 Australian Open final

2008 Wimbledon Final
2010 Wimbledon Quarterfinals

2009 U.S. Open finals
2010 U.S. Open Semifinals
2011 U.S. Open Semifinals

2003 Davis Cup Semifinal

2005 ATP Championships Final

This fan is devastated.

Notice how most of them are all from within the last three years.

I would say this year's French Open was pretty devastating too. He blew that huge lead in the first when he had set points and played a terrible tiebreak in the second set after emptying the tank just to break back. And lets not forget him melting away in the fourth after Blowing three break points in the first game.

Conclusion: It's been hard being a Fed fan the last few years. There's been ups and downs, but more downs than ups

You don't get to 16 slams without having many heartbreaking losses. I would have liked to see him win but he's the last person I need to feel sorry for.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind if Federer lost in 5 sets (even being 2-0 up) but 6-3 or 6-2 in the 5th.

He gives you false hope. That's the worst. Luckily Federer fans know that Fed can lose from any position right now so it's not that unexpected.

He pushed his opponents all the way in those matches. Past legends are often praised for their ability to hold it together in tough moments, but I feel that Fed seems to get overlooked.

In fairness to him, his win percentage in 5 set matches is pretty warped by the fact that he wasn't pushed to 5 sets often in his best years, but played many before or after his best.

I think he played 7 5 setters between 2004 and 2007? Between 1994 and 1997 Sampras played about 20.

If Fed had engaged the NYC crowd a touch more, it would've made all the difference in the last set I think.
Djokovic was so spun that people were against him, that I think it would've spiraled him completely out of it.
Instead Federer remained stoic, besides a few small fist pumps, and the crowd didn't have anything to latch onto.

Great match. Awful loss. He's still right there though.

Other than those 2 grand slam finals. i don't think his opponent had as crushing a defeat as Federer has had so many times.

Well, from my side of the pond, I feel like Roddick has been thrown overboard many times as well. For a comparative look, here's some of the worst for me:

2009 Wimbledon
2007 Australian Open
2010 Wimbledon
2006 US Open
2007 US Open

Of course we have our own biases; losing to the same guy can compound those crushing defeats.
