Federer talks about finetuning his racket

Roger Federer quotes from interviews in Paris formally introducing his new Wilson racket, the [K] Six.One Tour

On his new [K]Factor racket, the [K] Six.One Tour:

“I think you have to stay up with the technology, which is moving so fast. I asked them [Wilson] to give me a little bit more control. I tested a couple of rackets and we have been talking for two years. I think things are slowing down in tennis. It was power time years ago, like ten years ago. Rallies were kept short. But, now, rallies are going so long that I told them I need to feel like I can hit so many balls in a row without missing. Of course, my footwork has to be there, too, because the racket can only do so much. We also worked closely on the design. They showed me many, many designs, we cut it down and I am very happy with the result and it shows.”

On the degree of change in the [K]Factor racket versus his former weapon from the nCode series:

“It wasn’t a change where you think, ‘Wow, now I have to start from scratch.’ It was something that was very close to the old one, which just made me feel more comfortable.”

On the genesis of his collaboration with Wilson:

“I already had the idea that when I played with the Sampras racket, you know the 85 (square inches), I told them that the 85 for me is just too small. I need the bigger head because I’m shanking too many balls. I asked them if they couldn’t do a 90 square inch but in the same kind of model. I eventually convinced them to do it (nCode) and it sold very well. And then the [K]Factor racket came out.”

So, I have always been very close working with Wilson and we signed a long term deal together last year for both of us. We are obviously going to stay together and work together. I like to get involved.”

On the suitability of the [K] Six.One Tour for recreational players:

“This racket you can buy in stores and play against pros. That is very good, but you can also play with it if you are a good hitter of the ball.”

On his recent slump and the new racket:

“People were saying that it was the racket which I think is a bit much. I didn’t really think about it (the slump having anything to do with the racket) at all. I’m confident in my choice.”

On his use of the rackets during the seasons:

“I always carry twelve [rackets] in my bag, which is a good number because I’ll go through 8-10 rackets during a 5 set match in case you brake one or lose one. Sometimes you are unlucky and your racket shatters. I get a batch of clay court rackets and play from Monaco all the way through the French Open. I’ll change for the grass. Get some new ones. Then, I’ll change again for the hard courts. I’ll go through about 60 or 70 rackets. The rest we auction off for charity.”

Hey, how come Federer was able to convince Wilson to make a 90 sq. in. ProStaff, but I wasn't? Wouldn't Wilson listen to me more than Federer? ;) LOL

Man only if I could find out which auctions these are. I would be the only one crazy enough to play with the racquet if I got one. Hmm. This has got me speculating that maybe after fed first switched to the 90 like 4 years ago, wilson slightly modified it with the kfactor technology and fed liked it and so is now using a real k90. That or fed has been playing with a k90 for 4 years without letting us know. There really is no argument that people can bring up that can prove that fed uses something else other than a k90. Everything matches up the spacing of the strings and the longer pallet same 18 inch beam. Im glad that we have the chance to actually play with feds real racquet.

Maybe if you had the same ultra-fast racquet head speed as Federer and played on clay against other top pros, you'd be worried about that, too. But since you don't, you can use as small of a racquet as you want.

BP has been saying this too - that K90 is as close as you can get to Fed's real racquet. I agree it all sounds convincing. But we are talking about a lifetime deal worth many millions of dollars. Fed could be just using the PJ he has always used. I would not say he is lying - as has been discussed before, this is a grey area. He could be repeating the script rehearsed many times and almost convinced himself it is the truth.

Legend
It seems that Wilson's now "legally" saying that the K90 is Federer's actual racket.

Wasn't it in the past the advertisements that the N90 was "endorsed by World #1 Roger Federer" or "Roger Federer's racket of choice" which are vague in the legal sense? Also note the many discrepancies pointed out by the observant between the retail N90 and Federer's "N90s."

Now, they say that the K90 IS the racket used by Roger Federer, with all the bells and whistles the "K" technologies provides. That's different.

Obviously, the guy gets new rackets as the year progresses. Like the article you posted before the clay court season, then into grass, then again into the summer hard court season......then it's up to his personal taste as to how they're strung and weighted for each location and tournament.

But, if the base retail K90 is the actual frame that he uses which given the pallet length and string spacing, etc......it's as close as regular people can buy. Other than buying one of his actual rackets that he auctions off......

Let us kick off a discussion how the customization is done for each season.

Clay: more weight in the head?

Grass: more weight in the handle?

Hard: ?

Wait wait, so you're claiming that you got Wilson to make the Tour 90? Right...

No, it was later, for the K90. When everyone realized that N90 was not what Fed was using, BP wrote to Wilson to bring back something like the PS85 with a 90 head size.

There it is from the number one player in the world and perhaps greatest player of all time.

suresh, in case you don't comprehend what he is saying here, I will paraphrase for your little brain.

He is saying he was "shanking" too many balls with the PS85 >> not the K90, so you shouldn't feel like you won some grand victory. In fact, this little fact make you look like more of an idiot than you already are.

Additionally, I have never said he doesn't shank or mishit the ball (even with the k90). What I have argued is the FACT that in the matches YOU and other have said he shanked too much >>> that his opponent even with a larger frame shanked more shots.

Perhaps, as I have said before, the other pros on tour should take your advice and switch to larger frames >> Including Davydenko who shanked more shots today than fed.

In case you didn't understand this suresh, what he is saying is that if you lose it is not the racquets fault>> but the player weilding it.

On the suitability of the [K] Six.One Tour for recreational players:

“This racket you can buy in stores and play against pros. That is very good, but you can also play with it if you are a good hitter of the ball.”

Here he is saying that although the racquet is available in stores for the average joe playing recrateionally to play with, it is also good enough to play against pros. He is talking about the diversity of the frame, and the wide range of player types it could benefit.

“I already had the idea that when I played with the Sampras racket, you know the 85 (square inches), I told them that the 85 for me is just too small. I need the bigger head because I’m shanking too many balls. I asked them if they couldn’t do a 90 square inch but in the same kind of model.

So you shouldn't act like this is some sort of victory or vindication for you. If you knew how to comprehend what you read, you would realize this article suits my argument and stance on this issue much more so than yours.

I could care less whether Federer uses the off the shelf tour 90 or not. The K90 design, construction and feel are a reminder of what racquets can be if they are made with the good stuff (graphite). Its the closest thing there is to feeling like the PS85. My only gripes about this racquet is that I would have prefered slightly less weight for leading to my prefered balance (there is always the asian version) and of course its paint job. Otherwise Wilson box beams has playing characteristics and feel that I find unmatched in many racquets.

I agree. The feel is extremely close to the 85. Like you, my only beef was it felt heavier to swing than the 85, even though I add lead to my 85 at 3 & 9. I have not addded lead to the k90.

The asian is much closer in SW IMO. I'm actually going to led that one up like my 85.

I too agree. I think of it as the modern day ps85. I still prefer my 6.0 though. On off days and doubles the k90 is just a tad bit better than a 6.0. I like both sticks. The k90 has almost the same feel as a 6.0 if you dont put a dampener in it. I would prefer the k90 to have jsut a tad bit more overall weight so it can swing like a taiwan or st vincent ps 6.0.

Anyone on this forum have dibs on the idea of St. Vincent PS 85 yet? If not, it's me. ;)
But the St. Vincents were never an "idea" before they were made there. They were nothing special in the '80's before and during the time they were made since ALL PS 6.0 85's were made there at that time. So when you bought a PS 6.0 85, you had no choice but to get a St. Vincent even if you didn't really specifically want a St. Vincent. St. Vincents' only became popular many years after they stopped making them there in 1991 when people found out in the mid-to-late 90's that Pete Sampras preferred them and when Sampras started winning a lot and became #1. Thus, it was impossible for anyone to have come up with the "idea" of making the St. Vincent a popular racquet before the fact. Nice try, though. ;)

Yeah, it was a joke because I just randomly picked a well known racquet and put my name on it as if I was somehow associated with it... even though I'm not. ;)
Very nice try indeed if I do say so myself.
