Foot Fault Rules

I saw a the match between Nadal and Kendrick yesterday. On one point Kendrick was called for a foot fault bc he moved his foot before hitting the serve.

I thought the rule was you can step forward with your foot as long as it does not cross the baseline?

Thats basically correct but one is restricted to moving each foot only once - in other words you can't, as an example, take a running start. Now, this is seldom called and I doubt that was in the case of the match you were referring too.

Neither foot can touch the inside of the court prior to striking the ball - remember that any part of the line is inside the court. I suspect that because the pros get real close to the line that the call was exactly that - the shoe touched the line prior to the hit.

The reason for the call was not that Kendrick moved his front foot but that it touched the line.
The reason for which B. Gilbert pointed out Kendrick moved that foot while showing the replay is that, Gilbert thought, Kendrick must have stepped on the line by doing so.
