Helping disadvantaged kids, or volunteering in general, in New York

Seems like it would be a nice thing to do, plus it would be nice to put on a college app. Does anyone know of such programs?

edit: in regards to tennis of course

It's so obvious you are doing it just for college lol. Don't worry though that's how everyone is. I think better time would be spent doing sth you actually like to do that would actually interest you enough to do the research on your own.

well yes i mean partially for college. but i mean i love playing tennis, and i figure that it would be much more fun playing/trying to teach kids than sitting around in a nursing home ect.

well, not sure disadvantaged kids would have playing tennis high up on their list of things they need to do to help them out, and if you are not a coach you would not get paid for it anyway, so kind of volunteering to play tennis with kids who just wont be playing it and not getting paid for something you would not get paid for anyway (assuming you are not a coach) - this makes it hard for me to see where your sacrifice is?

sure it looks good on the CV but.....

Maybe clean the Jungle courts at 151/7 from the snow, the inner city kids will love it and you can pad your college app.

man......

what is with you and making sarcastic comments all the time? its like you look to cause a flame war.

the only question i was asking is if you, knew where one could find such a program. your posh, and somewhat obnoxious response took me by surprise. someone as well educated as you should realize that colleges are looking for accomplishments far beyond the classroom. why be stereotypical and volunteer in some nursing home or soup kitchen (as i said in a previous post), when one could volunteer in some aspect involving tennis.

someone as high up as yourself, and someone as well knowledgable in tennis, should volunteer in such an aspect as well. :)

no offense, but it seems like you have never lived in new york.

yea i know about nyjtl, i volunteered in their offices last summer with some other kids. they gave me a letter saying that i helped out and what not. i just dont enjoy working in an office environment during the summer, and i figure maybe there are some sort of organizations, if not nyjtl, that would let me do that.

^^ Correct I have never lived in NY, I have spent many many years in London, though of course its different, the problems kids face in such large cities are not going to be miles apart.

Anyway good luck.

I cannot believe you’re victimising me in this fashion here. I was never anything but nice and informative to you, and you were always insulting and mean to me.

In this particular case, I tried to give you good advice off the top of my head. The weather has been relatively mild this past week, while most of the outdoor courts in the city are still covered with snow from early last week. Take initiative and liaise with the city for equipment help perhaps, and get one of those outdoor public tennis facilities cleaned up. The jungle (151/7) would be a good one, unless they took the nets down. Something you can put down as community service extracurricular, plus maybe write about in your essay.

AM95, how are you? I don't think Sobad is a person you described. Any problem with commucation? Why don't you discuss with Sobad Privately?

I tutored kids in school. I did it because I love to help people:)
