"it was decided in 1st set" -Losing a Tiebreaker in Grand Slam Quarterfinal/Semifinal/Final - Big 3

After meekly losing in the quarterfinal today, Djokovic said that "it (the match) was decided in first set."

This came as a shock, as many of his fans have thought Djokovic to be the most resilient of him, Federer, and Nadal to win a match after losing a set that goes to a tiebreak.

Looking at win/loss in Grand Slam quarterfinals/semifinals/finals when Federer/Nadal/Djokovic lose a set that goes to a tiebreak.

Federer - 7-14 in Grand Slam quarterfinals/semifinals/finals when he loses a tiebreak set
Djokovic - 14-10 in Grand Slam quarterfinals/semifinals/finals when he loses a tiebreak set, now 14-11
Nadal - 7-6 in Grand Slam quarterfinals/semifinals/finals when he loses a tiebreak set

Djokovic is more mentally fragile now than he used to be the past few years. It's easy for anyone to carry on with the momentum of winning the first set or two, but it takes a true champion mentality to regroup against a top player deep in a grand slam.

Remember two years ago when he lost the first 2 sets to Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon? Everyone knew the job was far from done, and Djokovic easily came back. Or when Querrey was up on Djokovic at Wimbledon last year? Everyone knew in the back of their mind (including Djoker) that Djoker could easily shift momentum and still win, but Querrey came through...

While not really a Djokovic fan, it is really sad to see what was one such an incredibly strong and durable player crumble like he did. No disrespect to Thiem but I thought for sure Djokovic would have woken up by now and kicked his mental fortitude into high gear for a Grand Slam. I guess it just goes to show how truly difficult it is to win year after year.

Absolutely.

Would have loved Djokovic to be in form, because Thiem definitely had a good day and the match would've been really interesting.

Maybe a tight five-setter.
