Just got in a fight with an old man over a tennis match.

Let me start by saying it definitely wasn't my fault. I never look to pick fights with anybody especially on the tennis court when Im trying my best to focus on the point at hand, and nothing else. But this ******* was asking for it.

I was playing doubles with this older guy, in his late 60's, early 70's Id say, whom Ive played with on numerous occasions before, a 4.5 level player. On one point our doubles opponent threw up a lob that cleared my head, so I decided to let my partner take care of it, he hit the ball back on our side of the court and then started getting on to me about getting in his way, to which I simply replied, I couldnt see you. So we moved on, or at least I thought we did...The next game he started whining cause I looked back at him right before he served and he claimed that caused him to miss his serve. At that point Id had it. I told him that Ive been playing 15 years and I can handle myself. To which he replied that he had been playing 20 years, the funny part to me is Im clearly better than he is, yet he wont admit it, of course! Yet he thinks he can boss me around and be ****ing rude just because. I just wanted to share my frustration with you guys I guess, Im sure many of you have been through similar things.

Sorry for rambling just had to get that off my chest. Feel free to share any similar experiences.

You know if you want to p*ss off someone , it should be your opponent, not your own partner you are hitting with. The game is suppose to be fun. If some things are said, sometimes it is best to let it roll off your back, smile and go on with the game, so you both can enjoy it. It is suppose to me fun, and let your partner know that as well.

i once had an old russian man as a hitting partner. one day i showed up 10 minutes late and he told me "in the old days, we would have you shot!" :)

i never showed up late afterward.

I am disappointed. I was hoping for a fist-fight. :(

That's pretty childish on his part. Sounds like a 10 year old with blaming a missed serve because you looked at him. A verbal fight is no big deal, it happens all the time when playing sports.

Just like when playing pick-up basketball. You always have that one guy who thinks he is Kobe Bryant out there, shooting NBA threes when he doesn't even have any business shooting 15-ft jumpers, much less 25 ft 3-pt'ers.

It's something we all have to deal with. but that sucks. I hate it when situations like that happen. Just stfu and play the damn game, haha. He might have been acting like that because he's trying to prove himself since you are younger and he wants to feel like he can still hang with the younger people. Ego makes people act like asses, foolish, etc and is a rational explanation to an irrational behavior. Point is- I wouldn't worry about it, as that type of behavior really isn't uncommon. Just have to smile and keep playing. Just ignore people like that (I know, easier said than done lol).

Did you switch sides? If not, you'd throw a wrench in the return plan. Otherwise, you couldn't see him...do what?

So, I'm not sure what happened.

I couldnt see him because he was to my left and behind me and then he ran directly behind me as the lob cleared my head.

He's just an ass, Ill make sure that next time I play against him and kick his sorry old ass!

I know Im better than him and shouldnt put up with him barking orders at me. I was the reason we were winning so he needed to stfu and worry about himself.

He's probably insecure because Im better and Im 40 years younger.

Next time you play him, be patient and wait for a short ball that you can drill him with. After you drill him, hold up your hand and say, "I'm sorry, I was trying to go cross-court and it got away from me." Be sure to sound like you don't mean it. Revenge is good served cold, do this even if it's two years from now.

i would've walked off the court and gone home, what's the point of playing doubles if someone is blaming you

Seems like at 4.5 you should have enough sense not to turn around and face your partner when he serves, and to at least get the heck out of the way if you can't cover your lobs.

Now get off my lawn! :)

Hey, I'm definitely disappointed ... you misled us ... it was more like a lover's spat than a fight ... you didn't handle the situation very well ... and neither did he ... I believe you both need to grow up ... or ... get off the court!

My advice is to avoid this person for a short while. I have had experience with rude double partners and beleive me the best thing is to avoid them in the future. Tennis should be fun and you should both calm down and realize this. Of course, tennis can be a very frustrating game when things are not working out and people do tend to vent out their frustration. Maybe talk to him about this, that you dont appreciate his attitude ? One thing, you should not stare at your partner when he is serving :)

if somebody confronted me with an argument like that, my reply would be that he should better focus on the ball so that he won't be distracted by the man at the net.
arguing like that old f**t is just plain ridiculous. I wonder why you even play with folks like him.

Yeah I was playing doubles with the nuber one singles for my high school and he kept making horribe shots and just plain stupid ones. He is normally good but idk he was just not taking the match serious like i was. But even throughout nhe match he told me he likes to look down my girlfriends shirt and that he thinks she is sexy and all. Oh god I was pissed at him for screwing up the game and talking **** about my girl. We lost the match and I hit him a few times with my serve on purpose so now he has a few bruses.

Slaz, you've showed more than enough patience with this whinning brat.

Fighters don't talk and talkers don't fight....so enough of him already.

Should that old coot start up with you again, no more back & forth bickering:

knock him out.

Some of these old F***s have nothing elese to live for except playing a playing a game of tennis. If they really get out of hand I usually comment, "Good thing your days are just about over, Old Man."

Ouch!! Harsh but true. We old codgers know this, so our angst sometimes boils over. Me, I would never quible over an overhead, especially with a better player. Play on, brothers, young and old - and in between.:)

don't you think that this is a little bit harsh/over the limit? I mean this is tennis on a non competitive level that is supposed to make fun! people should enjoy the game, even if that isn't easy sometimes, and not get personal and hurt each other.

Nah...these old guys need to recieve their harsh due if they give it. With some of the real ill-mannered ones you have to cut right to the bone for them to get the message.

I was going to say pictures or this never happened. But apparently it never happened anyway. Probably for the best really, violence is never/rarely fun.

Very strong stench of age discrimination in this thread. I'm going to order up some AARP ass-kickers, those old Hells Angels need a hobby.

I didnt stare at him I just looked back at him to make sure he was ready for a split second and he got pissy.

this is not a fight. this is two fierce competitors each grasping for the brass ring of....victory. it's to be expected in a theater of war, such as pick up doubles at the park.

What happened is that Slaz was flexing on court again and the rest of the guys got jealous.

Just a cross he has to bear.

Had an oldie as a doubles partner yesterday. Guy was hardly putting any effort and then trying to pretend it was all beneath him. Then he should stay away, because each of us was paying a small amount of money to play there in a fabulous setting of hills and canyons. Then he said I was not giving the ball right to him before he served, as if he couldn't be bothered to bend or move his ass a foot. I realized that it was no point dragging this out, so I gave him the ball right into his hands next time and was extra nice to him, congratulating him on his slice (the only shot he has). We ended up winning, so it was worth it.

Advice: it is no fun to play doubles with oldies.

Close to the truth Mav.

That ol' coot's trying to smokescreen what's really buggin' him:

Slaz's "ripped bod" and overall hunkiness had every courtside septuagenarian and octogenarian hottie swooning and making cow eyes at him. The 1920-30 D.O.B. hotties now view this guy as one-and-done "yesterday's news" and he couldn't handle it....like Mav hinted at, it had nothing to do with tennis.

......from this point on, if he even so much as looks at you cockeyed, knock his ass out Slazenmeister

I am telling you Dedans this kid has muscles on top of muscles. He is so manly and muscular that if he stood next to Arnold in the 70's you would ask yourself "who is the little girl standing next to Slazenger?"

My GF informed me via text today that she was leaving me after finding TTennis and reading Slaz's posts. She was blown away by his forehands with "massive" spin, his mastery of the game and his 35 pounds of muscle. Once she found his old shirtless pics, she threw all my stuff on the lawn and demanded to be with a real man like him.

whenever i play doubles, it's always for fun. if i want to play seriously/competitively, i play singles with people my age. if things are heating up, it probably isn't fun for you. find someone else.

Chuck Norris would need to go 5 sets to beat Slaz.
