From 04-07 Fed had 13 losses to players outside the top 10 , so an average of 3 per year.

If we consider Nadal's peak 08-11 minus 09, Nadal had 12 losses to outside top 10ers in those 3 years So an average of 4 per year

So far Nole has had 5 losses to outside top 10ers from 2011-2013 start. Assuming 2014 is his last peak year, what do you think that number will look like?

This pretty much proves that we're in a weak era now when no one outside of top 10 can take out any of the top guys.

Either there's a lack of depth, or the top are just so above the rest of the field due to their greatness. You can read it both ways. My inclination is it's a bit of both.

Although surface homogenization does have a lot to due with the players' consistency as well.

Not really. Another possibility is the that top guys are so good that they can rarely be challenged by the others. That argument can be made(and constantly is around here, to no real effect) both ways.

I agree you can read it both ways, which is why it's meaningless to say 04-07 was a weak era.
