Natural Gut for PS85

Hi,

I would like to try for the first time a natural gut / hybrid (w/poly) string job.

Currently I play PS85 (china version) w/ prince original syn. gut 16 in 55 lbs, and I like this current setup. I just wondering what can I expect from natural gut string that I did not have w/ my posg string?

A little bit about my stroke, I hit mostly flat w/ a little bit of spin.

What brand, tension, hybrid do you guys recommend for PS85?

Thank you

Edwin

Well I do not know if I want poly. I'm just wondering if you blend poly and gut, maybe it was not so bad.

any recommendation on what brand and tension that would work good with PS85?

If going full gut, I'd go much higher. like 60+.

I currently use poly main /synth gut cross (54/56).
Good compromise b/w durability and feel.

I tried replacing the syn gut w/ gut once at the same
tension and it felt like a rocket launcher. I'd string higher.

The key idea/concept behind poly is for spin potential without power--keeping the ball in the court for big hitters. Since you hit flat already--are you sure you need poly? If you can afford and have had success with gut--I'd stick with that, IMO.

Full gut in a PS85 definitely requires a higher string tension if you hit flat, or you will be launching the ball into the fence more times than not. Pete Sampras strung his racket at 65-70lbs for a reason. Full gut is a VERY POWERFUL setup.

Thank you for all the response.

Power is something that I'm not really needed at this time. I will try hybrid poly and gut. Does anybody know a good tension combination to start with?

In my PT280 I use Luxilon Power Rough 16 at 55# mains and Klip or VS 17 natural gut at 55# crosses. That's pretty good.

I also use all Klip 17 natural gut at 60#.

Like others have said, you need a higher tension for the gut or it's too springy and powerful, making for lots of shots going long.

The two setups I mentioned above have a somewhat similar play and feel. I can go from one to the other. More comfort and power with the full gut at 60# and more control and spin with the hybrid. They are both very nice in the PT280 and should work well in a PS.

Enjoy!
