Flash of Anger, a Charge of Racism and a Witness Who Says It Didn’t Happen
The ATP, the organization that runs the men’s professional tennis tour, announced on Friday that its investigation of the incident found no evidence to support Young’s claim.

“All available evidence was reviewed including match footage and interviews with match officials and other tournament personnel who were in close proximity of the players,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, the audio recording on the match footage did not pick up verbal exchanges between the players. At this time no evidence has been found to support the allegation that Ryan Harrison used a racial slur during the match.”

Michael Bruno, 26, above, who served as a ball person at the New York Open on Monday, witnessed the tense exchange between the tennis players Donald Young and Ryan Harrison, and then gave his account to investigators at the ATP. He also made his account public.

Asked several times if he could have missed it, Bruno, who is white, said it was possible but unlikely.

“I guess if he whispered it,” he said. “But I never saw anything that shows one of them was whispering. And I would still be in close proximity.”

It is unclear whether the ATP will penalize either player. Harrison and Young have a history of acrimony, and Harrison is known on the tour for his aggressive and abrasive manner, often incurring the ire of opponents and tournament officials.

Bruno said he generally likes Young more than Harrison because Young is more approachable on court. But he said that he witnessed “ridiculous, immature behavior” from both players.

During its investigation, the ATP interviewed the umpire and the ball people and reviewed video of the incident, which shows Bruno standing behind Harrison. Audio of the exchange is unclear, but Bruno, who can be seen on the video drinking from a bottle of water and smirking, said he smiled because he thought the players were joking at first.

Harrison, he said, told Young not to audibly celebrate Harrison’s mistakes on the court, something that is considered poor sportsmanship in tennis. Young told Harrison to shut up, using an expletive. Bruno also said that Young leveled an abusive, nonracial, term at Harrison and challenged him to a fight. Harrison responded by holding his hand out, mocking Young for being short.

“Donald Young said, ‘Let’s take this outside, let’s fight outside,’ ” Bruno said. “Ryan kept saying, ‘You’re this tall,’ and kept gesturing with his hand, ‘You’re this tall, you’re this tall.’ ”

At that point, the umpire came down from his chair and separated the players. Later, Young took a bathroom break and Bruno said he heard the chair umpire say something to Harrison that appeared to be a warning.

“Harrison said, ‘You should really be addressing him and give him a talking to,’ ” Bruno said, “and that was that.”

And why the NY Times cares about the race of the ballboy? How's that important?

it's pathetic both of these crybabies even had these heated exchanges over such a crappy tournament in the first place. You would think Federer's dominance again would wake them up to the bigger picture.

So Bruno the ballkid has found his five minutes of fame.

As he himself says, he could have missed it.

As the ATP says, there is no clear audio evidence.

As I said from the beginning, it is a 'he said, she said' story.

And there is much white resentment about race and immigration, which is something people need to chillax about too.

As I said previously so much race mongering these day. Any comment is considered racist immediately. It's getting ridiculous. People need to chillax.

You make a good observation.

Is the NYT’s thinking here that it’s a story about race, so they should identify everyone’s race who is involved? Why do they assume people would want to know?

If the ball boy had been black would that make him more believable to you as a witness that nothing racist was said? Posing these questions to the crowd, not just at you Fedeonic.

Throwing accusations around reduces the gravity of the allegation too.

No doubt there are people resentful about immigration. There are many more people who just want immigration to be sensible and legal. I’m sure you would agree that’s the case, I just think it should be noted.

Nah just search Ryan Harrison's anger on YouTube, the guy at this years AO called some German player "German MFer" so I wouldn't be surprised if he really did.
I wouldn't have been surprised if he was guilty either, but that doesn't equal guilt and will never equal guilt.
These things have to be proven, and the burden of proof is always on those making the claim.

Bruno says he could have missed it.

And you missed that!

Bruno wants his five minutes of fame by going public.

His evidence would be more convincing if he had given it solely in camera.

"Said it was possible but unlikely."

You were wrong, just admit it. You convicted him based on the headline like the rest of you alt lefts

And the ATP never bothered to investigate that incident for which clear audio and video exists.

It is an allegation that, as I said at the time, is unproven and would be difficult to prove.

As in Scottish law, this is a case of neither guilty nor not guilty, but unproven.

If you want to invoke criminal law, which is of course totally irrelevant here.

Haha don’t try and act all impartial.
It’s clear that you were behind Young and believed his false allegations.

The ATP can act without complaint. This is not a criminal justice system, as everyone seems to think.

In any event, the important point is what the video and audio contains and this has not been challenged or denied to my knowledge.

Because nobody filed an official complaint.
Not because of some corruption.

People who make false claims (racism, rape, etc) should be punished. They would ruin a person's life over a lie.
Indeed. If it's proven beyond a reasonable doubt that they lied maliciously, they should recieve at least half the sentence/punishment that would have been given to the accused.

Just call them both immature idiots, or in PC talk, adolescent mentally impaired with anger management issues?

Disappointed with Donald Young. Unless you can bring up evidence , you should never level charges of this nature, even if the other person had actually committed an offense.

This is like TTW level of racist accusation in Serena threads

There is nothing to explain so we don't need any explanation.

We can hear and see the event for ourselves and interpret it unassissted.

It speaks more powerfully that Bruno the ballkid.
You would be calling Bruno a hero against the racist bourgeoisie if he claimed that Harrison was guilty. :D
