Wilson Butt Cap (swapping new for old)

I did a search, but could not find an answer.

I have 2 Wilson K Factor 90 tennis racquets. A few months back there was a discussion on the new and old Wilson butt caps. I believe a few posters swapped out the new Wilson butt caps for the older one (the black ones with the red trap door). I was interested in swapping out the new for the old (not really because Fed has the old, but I hate the look and they feel a bit different). To me, the older butt cap felt a little more comfortable. I was able to confirm this a while back (on anothe racquet..the PS Tour 90).

So I was wondering is anyone out there changed or swapped the new Wilson butt cap for the older black ones (with the red trap door). Was it a success? The person at my club does not think it will work (I think she is clueless). I don't see why they can't be swapped. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I dont know about Wilson, but I switched the butt caps on my Dunlop rackets and it worked fine. You will just need to staple them back on with a staple gun, which isnt very hard.

no reason it shouldn't work. wilson = wilson.... and if it doesn't, give it some love with a hammer :)

slappano,
If you are still looking for one, I have 4 of the old wilson buttcaps, 3 are 4 5/8 and one is 4 1/2. They are from an nCode 90 and 3 ps 6.0 85s though all 4 look identical in terms of style and construction. All are solid black plastic with a white W against a red background and no trap door.

If you are interested let me know and we can work something out.

I did it on all of my k90s, all you have to do is order the ones they have for sale on the tw site. I really don't notice any difference what so ever in how the raquet plays, I did weigh it for shoots and giggles and the old one is roughly 1 gram lighter, but there is no way on earth you notice it. The reason I switched them out is because the stock ones get scratched to the point of being illegible. The ony my dad has on his raquet has reached that point, he will spin it and I pretty much have to get within a foot of the butt cap to see what direction it is. Whereas the old ones are pretty easy to see and are flush so they don't wear like the new ones. Also aesthetically the new ones don't match the paintjob of the racquet whereas the old red and white ones do. I personally think it is worth doing, but that is just me, and all you have to do is order the ones off the tw site and pop the old ones off and put the new ones on and you are finished.

I might do this as well with my k95, the Butt cap digs into my palm. Its very annoying.

Updata,

I sanded down some of the edges on the butt cap, and that took care of the problem. There used to be quite an edge on almost all sides of the cap which dug into my palm.

I switched the butt caps on both of my (K) Six-One Tours to the old trap door ones and I love it. It dosen't really affect the playability of the racquet at all, but I find it to be more comfortable on my palm and it looks way better than the (K) Factor buttcap.

so the trap doors ARE interchangeable with the new ones????
or you had to switch the entire butt cap by taking off the grip, etc.
where did u get the old trap doors?

Hi All,

If possible might someone be able to post a Picture of what the New Style Butt Cap looks like compared to the Butt Cap style with a Trap Door?

Regards,
John

There are pictures of the Wilson trap door butt caps at TW under the stringing tools and accessories section. I'm doing the same thing with one of my Prince racquets, I don't like to new Prince butt cap, so I'm going to replace the new version with the old version.

Davey,
thanks for the offer, but I have 4 3/8 and they won't fit.

If it's too loose you can cut a small piece of overgrip and wrap it around the handle where you put the buttcap.

Hey,
I was just telling him they 1/2 won't fit. The 3/8 you sent back fit perfect.
I am having them put on soon.
