Winning Ugly

Who here has gone into a match only to trail fast and then change strategies

this past week i was playing an ex college player and trailed 0-4

my shots seemed to sit up for him and he got into a rhythm

at 0-4 0-40 returning i decided to change pace and kill his momentum

i started moonballing and coming in after that

i won the next 9 games in a row and then after losing 1 in the second set i won 3 more

i have come back in junior tournaments before like this and only use this in extreme desperation, one match being 0-6 7-6(7-5) 16-14

and does anyone prefer to lose playing their game or win playing with a scrappy strategy

Yeah. I would rather play tennis than win.

I won a league match last night where the opponent sacrificed the point by sending out their worst doubles team at #1. It was a waste of my time and miserable.

well im talking about when youre playing a tough opponent, not when you are playing a match in a team

i hate playing stacked line ups

i play 1 singles, and im still pretty small so for the most part i have to make these guys work by running them around or hitting shots that are off paced

Why is it any different? Tennis is tennis and bush league is bush league.

Sounds to me, your opponent who had the lead, and gave it up when you started moonballing and charging net, wanted to play his normal tennis regardless of the outcome.

he has this game that is strange, you can hit the ball as hard as you can and he will redirect is using your pace

i just didnt let him do that, and when he had to make his own pace. he sprayed it everywhere

my best comparison would be andreas seppi, though obviously not that good

this was the first time he had lost a match at the club i play at

HE'd rather lose the match than to change his game.
Isn't that what you asked in the first place?

Congrats on the win. If your opponent is too hard headed to adjust his game strategy, tough for him.

Tennis is about finding the weakness of your opponent. If he can't handle moonballs, his problem, you exploit it. There are no rules on what style you have to play, everything is legit. Some people need to think outside the box.

What college did this guy go to that he can't beat a moonballing strategy?

Unless of course those tactics are bush league.

If a guy can't counter a moonball strategy, he just sucks. Period.

he is about 3 years out of college, i cant remember the name

That makes sense.

I was playing a kid that was on the Utah tennis squad last year. I tried to moonball him a few times. Didn't work well. He just saw it as a ball he could be offensive with and totally took control of the point.

I had a few plays that worked against him, but moonballing wasn't one of them.

But I will say that moonballing does work against players even at the 4.5 level (some anyway). I use it. If a guy can't handle something as simple as a moonball, all that guy is going to see is moonballs, that for sure. A no risk shot for me. But at the college level (at least 5.0), it doesn't work anymore.

He may suck. But he's still better than the guy he was playing.

Thanks, your trolling attempts are amusing, but have been done many times. Nobody is going to take the bait kid.

to be fair guys they arent flat moon balls like pushing up random shots

its heavy topspin that kicks out, after 1 or 2 in a rally i would come into net and put away volleys

the high bouncing topsing moonballs were the only way to kill his rhythm

Ah, then the "moonball" is my normal rally shot. Keeps my opponent pinned to the baseline (my opponents are normally hitting rally shots at shoulder height or higher, then I mix in slice, especially with my backhand). Then I have to determine if I should come in (or will I get passed), or should I just outlast him in the rally. I normally go for option #2. I love to watch my opponent get frustrated and start going for more (and make more errors) as the match goes on.

I don't see this as winning ugly by the way. It's good tennis.

I respect your troll game. That's the sign of a top tier troll to accuse the other guy of trolling first.

I admittedly thought you were being serious at first. Well played.

I thought this was a thread about the terrible clothes people wear at the court -- for me I'm rather fond of my old swimming trunks, a nice stretched out, ripped and stained T shirt and a baseball cap that looks like the lawnmower had a go at it.

I saw a guy playing in cargo shorts last night. I couldn't imagine.

I have that same outfit. Who is your designer?
