Women: Open Era Career Win/ Loss Percentage

BTURNER

Legend
I created this list by using Bud Collins Total Tennis stats in the Open Era register. He documented the win/loss percentage year by year during the open era years. I just did created the career average using basic Jr. high math. The asterik is just a reminder that the pre-open years are not included for players such as Court/ King and the stat is not as useful. Of course for players still active when the book was sent to publish in 2002 like Hingus or Seles, the record is incomplete as well. but for the most part their records went down as age/ burn-out took their toll. I did the same for the men and will post should there be interest

I am sorry BTURNER, I hope you' re not mad, I forgot to open a new thread...
Anyway, the win/loss are from today actually, april 14, 2008. And they are like you. For steffi for exemple : 902-115 it's 0.887 right ?

For the men, I did all the Grand Slam winners and the number 1 after 1968.

You really can't include players that are still playing with those players who are already finished with their careers as it gives a skewed account of the numbers. Only those who are already done should be included.

If you wanted to compare a Sharapova or a Williams to say a Graf or a Court you would have to take their stats when they were the same ages and then compare the two.

I wouldn't use Bud Collins Ultimate Tennis for accurate win-loss records before 1977. Apart from say Evert and Navratilova the statistics in the book are not complete. For example the book has Smith-Court with a total win-loss record for 1968-1977 of 122-18 but in 1968 (107-12), 70 (113-6) and 1973 (100-5) she won 100 matches in a year. Her total win-loss btw 68 and 77 was 621-60 (91.2%) and her career total 1177-106 (91.7%). For BJ King in her greatest year (1972) they have her win-loss at 17-0 but it was more like 87-3.

The statistics in the book mainly use Grand Slam/ Davis Cup/ Federation Cup results between 1968-1976 and then use the ITF database of results after this period. For the men they haven't included the 1970-76 Grand Prix or WCT circuit results and for the women the early Virginia Slims results.

As stated above, I agree on both points expressed. Yes Evert-fan using the stats for a partial career is only a guidepost along a freeway. I included them because they were offered up but assume the intelligence of the reader to gage their worth. Tas, I used Bud as a base but have been willing to accept any corrected data anyone chooses to post. They will continue to be incorporated as folks post them. My day job does not offer enough time to do the kind of research it would take to re-do these numbers. Steffi-forever's list was as often as not different form Buds. I used hers. I think there is benefit to comparing champions and near champions , not just as snap-shots of their great years or great efforts, but on their way up, on their way down and every time they took to court at any venue, against any opponent. The career win/ loss stat does that.

Actually, if the Powers-That-be on this forum could delete the first list that I posted entirely, it would be a service. It adds more confusion than anything.
