Alright.. So Fed needs 2 slams. He needs to grab at least one this year

Others may disagree. But the pack is definitely catching up here pretty quick and while Fed is still having strong showings at the slams, reaching final after final, his results will inevitably get worse if he continues going down this road. Fed is at the point in his career where certainly his eyes should be on the prize. (French Open or slam record) either one. Both if all possible. Some will say he has a good 3-4 years to manage slams. Im not so sure about that at this juncture. I think it is a NECESSITY he grabs at least one this year. If he goes slamless this year, he may never be able to get those last 2. Nadal is not going anywheres for quite a while, and Djoker and Murray arent going anywheres. Murray just keeps improving by leaps and bounds and eventually he is going to interject himself at the slams on a consistent basis. Not to mention some other players who could sneak in. If Fed wants that record. He better get it now while he still has enough game to do it. Murray is only going to get better overrall and on Hardcourts and Im sure his game will improve on grass and he may surprise alot of people at Wimbeldon this year.

RG may be out of the question for Roger. He better be gunning for Wimbeldon and the USO though. Sampras hung on for 2 years without a slam. But also by that time the record was already broke. Could Fed really be able to deal with 2 years and no slams? Highly unlikely considering how he used to dominate. It would prolly eat him alive

No i totally agree. With his game declining, a baby on the way and the rest of the field getting stronger and unraveling the weaknesses of federer i agree that he atleast needs to defend his USO title. At least. Because when that baby kicks in i dont think he'll be getting alot of focus or sleep as a matter of fact.

It's a worthwhile consideration, mentally if Fed takes a slam this year I think that'll do him the world of good because at least then he's proved to himself (and everyone else) that he can still do it. I do wonder if a year with no slam might make him doubt whether he himself has still got it. Depends on how close he comes in the remainder of the year.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with you about him needing to grab one, I tend to think that if Fed was to win 1 slam next year pre US open that I'd probably back him to take that too.

He's still got the game, I think it's nearly unanimously agreed that the downfall has come on the mental side of things, if he was to get on a roll and build some serious confidence I think he'll still be hard to stop. Also he does seem to have better concentration during the slams than elsewhere.

Federer is always on fire at the US Open....I don't know how he does it......

But with the rise of Murray, it will be a little harder this year.

And If Nadal isn't walking on one leg by the time the US Open comes around, he will also pose a threat.

I think if Fed can win USO this year and take AO next year he can retire for good. :) Can't stand watching him any more. no matter how good the play is its getting boring. No sorry HIS getting boring. I have to watch the WTA now cause i grew tired of Federer.

This is something I have touched upon in other threads, I don't feel his talent has declined much but mentally his focus is clearly not there, and it will be tough for him to keep his focus on the court, the young players can keep all their focus strictly on tennis, for example, Andy Murray doesn't even have his drivers license lol, all tennis, all the time. Federer on the other hand has a child on the way, I would venture to say it has already affected his mental focus this season and
more than likely will not get much better especially when Mirka is not traveling with him, something he has never faced in his career, Mirka was always there and her focus was always for Roger, big change is on the way and has already started.

I think fed can do it at wimbledon. Or atleast I hope so. It seems that he's working towards getting back wimbledon and there are not that many people who can threaten him or rafa, so I would say both would reach the final. Last year the final was close and if he can get together mentally, I would give him a shot there.

It won't happen. He won't win the French, which leaves 2 GS left , with 0 this year. I just don't think he will win Wimby and USO back to back, but maybe 1 of the 2 if he plays out of his mind. Everyone is catching up and now there are a total of 3 players that can beat Fed. Roddick still hasn't figured Fed out and I suspect he won't in the near future.

Agree with OP..

I think US remains his best for slams he seems to bring it there the best over the past few years at least in the later stages..

estoril, halle and basel are not slams dude

Nadal will be too exhausted at the remaining slams to challenge Federer, so as long as he is able to defeat Djokovic, he'll be fine. And we've seen what Federer does to Murray at slams, provided Murray can make it past the round of 16.

nah Fed aint going anywhere with his back. he cant handle five sets against nadal, murray and joker. he is carrying back injury since october, 6 months man!!! his back will be worse when wimbledon and us open come. he should have managed his schedule better.

Federer won his last 3/5 sets encounters with Murray and Djokovic. And he's beaten Nadal in five-setters before, so he definitely has what it takes. His back will not be a problem. He missed one tournament because of his back. Nadal missed three at the end of last year because of his knees. Nor do I see precautionary tape on Fed's back.

Thats true. Fed played a crapload of tennis these past few years and never missed a big tourney. Even after winning 3 slams in 07 he played a series of exos with Pete. Sooner or later it catches up with u. It may have caught up with Fed

haha that was in Fed prime and Nadal and Murray had not peaked. Nadal and Murray always beat Fed in final sets last year and this year, theyre fitter and mentally stronger than Fed. Nadal had knee injury in November and won the AO in January, go figure  Fed withdrew from davis Cup last month cos he was INJURED on his back and he has won ZERO titles since his back injury. yeah Fed cant tape his back, he needs to stop playing and manage his schedule better.

Federer's fine. The fact that he can still play exos with Sampras after winning 3 slams is a testament to his fitness and athleticism. Nadal won 2 slams last year and couldn't even finish the season. I'd be more worried about him.

Federer beat Murray the only time Murray managed to make a grand slam final. Since then Murray has not done well in big tournaments. Lost in the semis of the TMC and the 4th round of the Australian Open. Sounds like he had "peaked" to me (since he's already declining).

I sure don't remember Murray beating Federer in the final set of their U.S. Open encounter. In fact, he barely avoided a bagel.

He needs one asap...

It's never going to happen but: Imagine if he won the FO beating Nadal in the final... He would be the Ultimate GOAT..

Pitty it won't happen :( I would love to see him do that

we're talking about the same guy who pretty much destroyed his competition on the way to the final last year, has won 81 matches on clay, 4 straight french opens, and has never been taken to 5 sets. Yeah, I think he's going to make the final.

Anything is possible. But with Nadal's recent knee problems and the fact that he's never played so much so early in the year, I think he won't physically have what it takes to win 2 weeks of 3/5 set matches.

I don't think nadal will have any knee problems on clay. It suits his game very well. Hardcourts give him more problems.

The surface is softer, but he does more running and sliding around on clay than on hardcourt. Plus, it's a cumulative process. It's not one match or one tournament that'll make his knees bad. It's a combination of all of his recent tournaments.

Actually he played the same amount of matches in 2008 by April 05, and he went on to completely dominate the FO.

What recent knee problems? The ones that stopped him from destroying Murray in the IW final?

This year he's played 27 matches. Last year, at this point, he had played 27 matches. You're forgetting that he skipped Dubai this year, whereas he played it last year.

I see. Sorry for the misinformation. But last year he wasn't coming off of a knee injury that caused him to miss the year end Masters and the Davis Cup final (the two biggest events outside of grand slams) and also caused him to retire in Paris. So I think he would be wise to tone it down a bit.

You make a good point there.
If push comes to shove, the organizers could definitely feed Federer another slam.
They succeeded in Wimby 2007 and almost succeeded in the Aussie this year.

Since before the AO I have felt that Federer would tie Sampras at Wimbledon and go on to break the record at the US Open.
Sampras half joked about not wanting to fly to Australia for the occasion. I am sure he'd love to go to England again and then on to New York.
If Fed wins in England he will regain his aura and the media machine will be adding to the momentum. The baby will also contribute to the inertia.

If this does indeed happen I believe he'll play at his leisure and possibly only play slams, if he does not retire outright.

Besides, he and Nadal made a deal in Australia..

He should try for Wimbledon. Big monkey off his back (14th Slam) and he can play without the pressure from then on, or even retire and hope for Nadal to get injured and not equal his record.

You think that the one mach last year (which happened to also be Murray's first slam final) proves that Murray will never beat Fed in a slam? I think you're in for a rude awakening soon.

Yes, I agree with the OP. I don't think Federer can win the FO this year. I think he had his chances in 2006-2007 and blew them. Instead I think Wimbeldon and especially the US Open should be his main priority. I say forget about #1, let Nadal have it, and just have consistent enough results to keep #2. When Wimbeldon comes, turn slam-Fed on and go for it.

you could see this happening starting last year.

IMO, fed needed to win AO this year to have a better than 50/50 chance of overtaking pete. french is not likely. wimbledon is not guaranteed. niether is us open the way murray and others have been playing. even roddick seems to be doing better, although still loosing.

I think the US Open is his best shot. He usually finds his game there, and plays very well. I guess the courts suit him. Winning the US Open as the 14th slam would be sweet. Of course, him winning the USO as his 15th slam would be even sweeter.

It was also his first slam semi, but that didn't stop him from beating up on Nadal.

And I certainly don't think Murray will never beat Federer in a slam, but I'm confident that the next time they meet, Federer will take it.

Murray beat Nadal because Nadal had only one leg left with which to play the match. And he still got a set off Murray. Everyone knows that.

I didn't say anything to the contrary. But obviously nerves were not a factor in his match with Nadal, so why would they be a factor in his match with Federer the very next day?
