Just curious: which has been Roger's best surface over the years?

I'm asking because watching the news report this morning I suddenly realised the 2 Grand slams he failed to win this year were on hardcourt. Although he still made the finals in both AO and US he failed to close it out, and he hardly makes a fuss in hard court Masters anymore. Is he losing his touch on hard court or has it been his worst surface?
I'm pretty sure it isn't his worst surface. It must be his second best surface at least, after Grass.

His favourite surface is actually clay.He played on clay courts for a long period during his childhood.
Of course he's always been an all-court player but he likes clay.
Best surface performance wise-I cant say..its a toss-up between grass and hard.

Any stats on Feds carpet performance. I've always been curious of that.

And please no i don't mean in privacy with Mirka (rolls eyes)

I think during his prime/peak years it was HC but after his prime IMO it's grass.Don't know if it makes senses,it's a close call between HC and grass anyway.

Definitely grass. His game is breath taking and flawless on that stuff. Even when it's playing rather slow...his movement and his strokes are just the best fits imaginable for the surface.

For crying out loud, since 2003 he's been beaten ONCE on grass...a 9-7 5th set nail biter to his biggest rival and the #2 player in the world whose biggest goal was to finally win the title he'd always dreamed of.

He's been taken to 5 sets just 3 times--twice by that Nadal guy, and once by an Andy Roddick playing out of his mind.

I'd say grass... closely followed by fast hardcourts. However, the undeniable fact is that Fed's gotten old, and he's not his old self anymore. Gone are the days when Fed will blow anybody off grass and hard courts...

Federer is the greatest hardcourt player of all time by far. He is not however the greatest on clay or grass.

So I still say hard court is his best surface

Grass. He will only win wimbledon in 2010. No more slams. Too many players can beat him on HC slams now. No more HC slams for Fed. No more flukey FO either. Just Wimbledon.

Even if he won the USO yesterday, grass would remain the surface that Federer's most comfortable at. Federer is actually comfortable at any surface (including clay) but his game, and the one-handed BH in particular, perfectly suits grass.

He's best on grass then HC.
HC is the most competitive though, so it can occasionally make him look like clay is his 2nd best.

He's always said his favorite surface is grass and he enjoys playing on grass a lot, but he does like clay as well.

I think the difference between him and other players is greatest on grass.

But his most impressive records are the HC ones, because there is so much competition there and there are a lot of great HC players.
