I don't know how they do that at all....on either side...

I think SJ got what he really wanted just now. As a competitor he will give it his all in singles, but this meant everything and why he came back. Good for him and college tennis.

SJ is a great tennis player but as for sportsmanship, he is a bad example. Let's not put him too high up that pedestal. I'm glad he's moving on.

Sounds like sour grapes. Greatness takes confidence and presence, people just aren't happy when someone is that good. Competing is a strategy, this isn't chess where you sit quietly. Ask the players what they think of him - I don't think bad sportsmanship comes to mind. They guy is just good at what he does.

LOL. I knew someone would probably say that. When a guy pouts, yells, screams at umpires, even hits balls at them, the guy does not deserve being called good for college tennis. He needs a a lesson in sportsmanship. Maybe the pro tour will teach that to him.

Still, what he has done in his years at USC is amazing so congrats to him. Wish he could have done it with class.

sportsmanship is really dead in almost every sports, people just wants to see the ""W"" .. I don't think anything of what Steve Johnson did was/is unethical .. he played within the rules..the umpires and tournament officials were out there .. I'm sure the east coast bias people are not going to let him get his way if he was wrong.. a college player,no matter how good is not that big of a deal .. for him to come back and play 1 more year to win this, shows his true character.. I think in the long run,it will help college tennis when we look at the whole picture.. being ''homegrown'' while most of the college elite players are foreigners and winning is great for USA tennis on a small scale .. we may not have a world's best pro but we have the world's best college player ..

I don't see what the problem is. This happens in literally every single sport and its a non issue.

I disagree. In sports like football, basketball and soccer the referees do not put up with the kind of abuse that some tennis players are now doing whenever something does not go their way. It needs to be stamped out.

Good point. If a player goes up to a ref in basketball and abuses them for a minute with "are you blind" "Thats terrible" It's a sure technical.

you forgot Pepperdine..

And Baylor. And Illinois. LOL

I thought it was pretty obvious I was only listing repeat winners. 8 teams have won. I only listed 4. If you wanna get into the details, then Trinity was the 8th team.

I've also only seen Steve Johnson play twice, and I wouldn't say he did anything unethical or bad by rules standards. But he was very whiny, and he sure didn't carry himself like a champion on a 65 match winning streak.

1) #1 Steve Johnson (USC) def. #4 Jarmere Jenkins (UVA) - 6-3, 6-2
(2) #25 Ray Sarmiento (USC) def. #39 Alex Domijan (UVA) - 6-4, 7-5
(3) #2 Mitchell Frank (UVA) def. #21 Daniel Nguyen (USC) - 6-3, 6-2
(4) #57 Emilio Gomez (USC) def. Drew Courtney (UVA) - 6-4, 6-2
(5) #51 Yannick Hanfmann (USC) def. #82 Justin Shane (UVA) -- 6-4, 2-6, 7-6
(6) Roberto Quiroz (USC) vs. Julen Uriguen (UVA) - 2-6, 7-6 (3), 3-4 susp.

I wouldn't have predicted this outcome at all after the doubles and rain delay ,then moving to indoors... USC players have little experience with indoor tennis ,where as UVA do a lot of indoors..

Sarmiento,Gomez,Hanfmann, and Quiroz have been struggling lately.. it looks like they put their game into a higher gear .. a great coach can motivate this kind of results.. hats off to Peter Smith in getting the maximum effort from his players at the best time possible...

RT @BenRothenberg:Wow MT @TuckerJohns: Michael Shabaz clearly didn't learn anything in last yr's semi. Ejected this yr as fan for heckling

I'll never doubt you again. :)

I don't know why you doubted it in the first place. LOL. It clearly wouldn't be out of character for Shabaz. :)

Which would you rather have? A NCAA Second Place Trophy? Or a NCAA Final Four Trophy? For some reason, I'd rather have my trophy say Final Four rather than Second Place. Weird.

Hey experienced ones out there - how do you think Georgia did as hosts? I know facilities are great per the players, but this indoor thing and rain (which they obviously can't control) but should they have planned better? No video at all was very disappointing. No sound on video feed was not good either. Is this standard for sites where weather is an issue, or are their sites better equipped for plan B? Just curious about past track records....

Would have been hard to see rain like that coming. Athens is statistically one of the least likely places to receive rain in Georgia because it's in a sort of rain shield. I think it had rained one day in the month prior to the tournament...

If there had been all day rain, there was a provisional plan to bus the players about 50 miles to Norcross to play at a larger indoor facility. The rain came late in the afternoon, a bit unexpectedly, so that wasn't really possible.

As far as not having camera's indoors, it's just not that feasible if you've ever been inside. I mean, it could be done, but you wouldn't have been pleased with the angles. I do think the outdoor webcams could have been better, but the system was already in place, and I'm not sure how much "better" they could have been without becoming too much for computers to stream easily. I would hope that's upgraded next time they host though, because I know the current system has been there for at least 3 years and is probably getting outdated.

Conclusion of UVA/USC Doubles Point

Here is the video of the final few points at #2 & #3 doubles in the UVA/USC match. The 2 courts finished almost simultaneously - after seeing this I was thinking it'd be a UVA runaway. You can hear the wind and see the rain drops near the end. Video can be viewed in HD by changing quality setting.
