40 Parting Thoughts from the 2018 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells

. Early in the tournament, a coach who will go nameless claimed to me that there was only one player in the tournament who was unafraid of Roger Federer. He took my drawsheet and circled the name Juan Martin del Potro. Days later, DelPo wins the first Masters 1000 title of his career, taking down the Mighty Federer 6-4, 6-7(8), 7-6(2) in a splendid final.

• This loss in the final will sting. But Federer is the belt that is cinching men’s tennis (all of tennis?) right now. He’s reached an altitude to which no other player has ventured. And, at 36, he is playing some of the best tennis of his career. We can worry about the inevitable transition period that will exist after Federer retires. But for now, enjoy the history being made.

My only further thought about this:

As much as any player I've ever seen, Fed is a front-runner. I don't think he's every had the defensive reserves of the other players.

He never looks tired in the way of delaying, or sucking wind. But I think he was gassed in today's match, perhaps more emotionally than anything else. Unlike other players who are visibly tired, and perhaps also playing possum, he seems to play poker, acting as if he's still fresh, but I don't think he had anything left in that last TB. I think he spent it all breaking at the end of the 3rd set, and when he faltered in the next game, he had nothing left.

Yes! Tennis worth watching again!

Finally, someone was able to stop the weak-era-old-grandpa juggernaut.

GO DELPO!! MAKING TENNIS INTERESTING AGAIN!

Greatness is not boring. But is this Greatness any longer.

Or is this the most emphatic transparent proof of such a weak era?

All this talk of “weak era” - from a bunch of armchair fans (me included, I hasten to add) who are highly unlikely to have played the game at the top level. Once you have then come back and gloat.

So to address the OP's rather tongue in cheek (I fancy) statement..
More than a mere 1000?
Er, no it's 1000 points and now the circus moves on.
