Kerber looking really good early. Saves three break points for a 3-0 lead with a variety of shots that helped see her win 3 slams. Drop shots, aces, long rallies, big serves. She delivers it all.

Yeah, I've always liked watching Kerber play. She reminds of a player from the 80s-90s - Natasha Zvereva - or even Hingis - in how she redirects the ball. She needs to give Serena lessons on how to get DOWN for her shots. Losing your feet (speed, footwork) is a major thing for aging players, but I think just as big is losing your legs - bending down, squatting down for the ball and driving upwards with the legs. Serena hits everything standing straight up now.

I kind find Petra Kvitova uninteresting to watch now in a match. There is no personality that I know of in her but yet the U.S. commentators praise her like crazy! I don’t get it! She suppose to be a great sportswoman and won awards for that and I think she was briefly married to a hockey player.

Yes, she is very well-liked by her peers. What would you like her to do so she is interesting to you? I think personalities on and off-court can be quite different, just like a lot of sports.

More insight to see what she is like in after match appearances to get some insight into her personality. Is she funny, or dull, shy or outgoing, etc... She acts very much in character as a WTA top tour player but I know nothing about her after 10+ years on the tour. Complete blank in terms of being a fan or dislike. I not either!

Well, well... M'lady was the latest victim of the "WTA gonna WTA". Started with a breadstick, ended being eliminated with a bagel.

Brady went through the Futures circuit while Bellis had the connects like Donald Young/Bouchard’s and got in with main draw WCs.

Kiki Mladenovic can go play cards with Benoit again. 6:1 5:1 – and still some Russian no name won in the end.

Garcia seems to be doing well, up 4*-0 in the first set against Karo Pliskova. Edit, make that 5-0. Karo took it to deuce though.

Garcia going down in flames after being up a set and break, as is her style. Nice to know some things never change :D

Caroline Garcia looks happy. I feel like she has a tendency to let matches slip, so this is nice to see. Go Caroline!

Happy... and relieved from the looks of it. Or maybe I'm projecting. :)

In about an hour, three seeds bit the dust. Sevastova, a semifinalist here 2 years ago, is also out. I've only seen the last points between my dinner cooking, but Kostyuk was cool as a cucumber in those final tiebreak points. I really thought she was bound to lose the set after facing only 2 breakpoints, I think, but with a mix of power, finesse and brains (that dropshot when Sevastova was way behind the baseline was a nice touch), she really turned that 5-2 down. Great stuff.

Pliskova v Garcia is going to be a real interesting one.

Karolina might be the top seed but she's not the favourite for the title. She hasn't gone past the 4R at a slam in her last 4 attempts. She started the year well defending her Brisbane title but then lost in the 3R of the Aus Open to Pavs, then a QF loss in Dubai to Rybakina, 3R in Doha to Jabeur. Upon tennis resumption she lost her opening match to Kudermetova. She started well in her 1R but Garcia is a former top 5 player who's won the same amount of Premier 5/Mandatory titles as Pliskova(!). Their H2H is tied at 3-3 with their last match being the 2018 Tianjin final which Caroline won.
Well saw that one coming. Not sure if Karolina will ever get over the line for a slam.

ESPN play favorites! Lavish production for Osaka and three ESPN praise for her activism. Now an pre-match interview too. Too much pre-match marketing. Never seeing this before! (n) o_O

Betting odds for who'll win the title are wild:

Kerber $34 (should be way higher. former #1 with 3 slams including the USO just 4 years ago? come on)

Just think the odds are very skewed to recent results only.
Glad I chucked $10 on Kerber to win the tournament last night before Pliskova and Riske bowed out. Might not happen but her odds sure have shortened now.

Giorgi is all baseball today. Not sure if I'll be able to watch the entire thing like this.

Ack! She just hit a second serve that hit the ground before hitting the net. Game Osaka.
