Why does Zina Garrison keep calling Yastremska "Daniela"? And when did she start commentating anyway?

Didn't think Yastremska would get up, barely escaped her match against Astra Sharma who really should have won. Sascha needs to jump ship, Dayana is no Naomi.

That top half is wide open:

3R:
Garcia v (28) Brady
(17) Kerber v Li

Sasnovich v (23) Putintseva
Gracheva v (8) Martic

(4) Osaka v Kostyuk
(24) Linette v (14) Kontaveit

Rogers v Brengle
Pegula v (6) Kvitova

3 slam champs left, 2 former USO champs.
No other former slam SFists in the mix.
Only former slam QFists: Garcia, Putintseva, Martic, Kontaveit and Rogers.

Of the 16 players in that section, only 7 have made a USO 4R before:
Brady, Kerber, Martic, Osaka, Kontaveit and Kvitova.

Good points on offer.

From the top section, Garcia/Brady/Kerber/Martic have a real clear path to the SF.

Second section will be a good one.
Osaka or Kvitova would be the hot picks but Kontaveit is in fine form and so under the radar.

Made the QF at the AO where she destroyed Bencic 6-0 6-1, I remember being stunned at that one.
Made the QF in Dubai with wins over Cirstea and Pavs.
Beat Sevastova in Doha before losing a tight one to Sabalenka.
Then Covid of course
First tournament back she made the Palermo final losing to Ferro
Then made the QF in Cincy/NYC thanks to a good draw but also pushed eventual runner up Osaka to 5-7 in the 3rd set.
Now into the 3R facing Linette who I just can't see being a threat as she's been pushed to 3 in both matches and although she won a title earlier in the year, hasn't done much else.

A 4R match between Kontaveit and Osaka would be real good.

And you can't discount the rising Americans.

Rogers only lost 4 games in her first match and just 6 against #11 Rybakina. She faces Brengle who also hasn't dropped a set and has only dropped 9 games in her 2 matches including beating #19 Yastremska. Pegula has played two tight 3 setters but has the strength. Kvitova isn't safe despite not havign a seeded opponent til at least the QF.

So Barty’s secures the #1 ranking for quite a while now. Even if Kenin wins the USO and Rome she’s still too far behind. Then it comes down to RG. Seems safe but.

Why was Kvitova hitting empty balls into the stand after her post match interview on court?

Giorgi is so garbage
Going home with crestfallen looks is going to be her lot permanently if she keeps hitting really hard straight to racquet, lol. It's like she thinks she can just hit right through a former world no.1 with two slams to her name.

But Naomi does look like the player to beat. Looked that at W&S too.

I wasn't expecting Vondrousova and Sevastova to go out at this point, I won't lie.
Anyone know how Kostyuk is playing? I feel like I haven't seen much from her since she played the AO main draw at 15. How about Ann Li - she hammered Riske?

I didn’t see a ton of the Riske match, but it seemed like she could never get out of the start she dug. She was always chasing, & that‘s certainly not her game.

It’s really weird that so many of you are concerned with someone’s language of choice. Could have sworn this was a thread about the 2020 US Open.

Agree those were some upsets. Vondrousova looked good in her 1R but Sasnovich isn’t an easy opponent. Still remember her random but great run to the Brisbane final winning 3 matches in qualies and 4 in the main draw to make the final.

Sevastova also a shock, haven’t heard much from Kostyuk since that Aus Open run.

And have no idea about Riske! Strange that one.

I saw her comprehensively beat a dejected Kasatkina. I think Kasatkina hit a total of 4 winners in her 2 and 1 loss, yet the highlights somehow made it look like Kasatkina played OK. :) Kostyuk was all over her that match though, solid hitting, great footwork, calm demeanor, I was pretty impressed. I didn't watch the Sevastova match, but in the highlights I saw that she came back from at least 2-5 in the second set tiebreak, that's pretty clutch.

If you want to learn more about Katrina Scott, just check out her WTA page:

I wonder if it helps young players not having that many people in the stands. Whatever the reason, Scott seems super chill.

Found a little more info on ITF tennis, apparently she's 16 years old. Looks promising. Great serve, great BH down the line, good composure, some decent defensive chips, good at changing hitting direction (from cross to down the line), good speed around the court. Hoping she stays fit.

I've been watching the entire Scott-Anisimova match. Scott is very impressive. Seems to have a calmness to her demeanor you wouldn't expect in someone so young.

Right? Thanks WTA!! :)

Meanwhile she takes the first set over Anisimova, and Pironkova takes the first over Muguruza. Interesting start of the day!
I mean their website is the worst. I was really surprised when they realised that their youtube highlights should last more than 30 seconds.

Muguruza's look of concern on her face reminds me of the Aussie final against Kenin. Can't handle Pironkova's lack of pace and retrieving.

Meanwhile Tsvetana looks cool as a cucumber.
