Federer best on grass, Nadal best on clay and Djokovic best on hard courts!

Face it, at this point a lot of people would say this and this is good for tennis as there are three great players who can battle for no1 position, and some other guys that can beat them occasionally, giving some thrilling to the season!

Does nobody remember that Roddick beat Federer on hardcourt at Kooyong just before the AusOpen?
Does nobody remember that Federer beat Nadal on clay at Hamburg just before RG?
Does nobody remember that Roddick won Queens just before Wimbledon? With Nadal defeated in the first week and Fed not even playing?

Djoko best on hardcourts ... bwahaha. I'm sure he will be one day, but it isn't today.
Warm-ups count for squat once the Slams start.

This is a bit stupid. Did you see that Kooyong match? It was and exhibition, Federer experimented by serve-volleying every service point. Federer always loses at Kooyong, he lost to Haas the year before, it means nothing.

Yes Roddick barely won Queens but Federer wasn't there, so someone other than Federer was bound to win... doh! Oh and Nadal was defeated in the first week, yes, it's a one week event.

bwahaha? Whats wrong with you?

But yeah I think it's too early to say that Djokovic is the best hardcourt player, we have to wait until the US Open where everybody will bring there A game.

I'm well aware Kooyong was an exhibition event, but Roddick somehow thought he had an edge on Federer from that match.
I admit my error with Nadal and Queens. I got a little carried away after seeing the thread title.

Djokovic has def. come a long way. I remember at the AusOpen he proclaimed Fed was going down, only to have Roger squash him like a bug. Now he controls his mouth a lot better and lets his game do the talking.

Djoko will find it a lot tougher beating Fed or Nadal at the USO in a best of 5.

too early. so far Fed is still hard court king. Djokovic is 2nd. Nadal has improved on it, but probably is worse than a surging Djokovic.

please dont jump to conclusions....

grand slams won on hard court:

federer: 3
djokavic: 0

including rebound ace hardcourt of AO:

federer: 6
djokavic: 0

Djokovic is 20 while Federer is 26. It is a joke to compare to slams and stuff as Djokovic is just starting while Fed is on his way out soon.

Djokovic is ahead of Nadal on hardcourts but behind on clay and grass. He is still behind Fed on all surfaces but has best chance on outdoor hard.
Fed is nr one everythingbut clay where he is the clear nr 2.
Djokovic's great form will make the rankings a bit more interesting and might open the door for Nadal to overtake Fed this year.

Actually it's very valid to do so as aren't we talking about who at present is the best on hard courts?

When Federer beat Samprass at Wimbledon in 2001 I doubt anyone was saying Samprass is no longer the best on grass (although he was 'on his way out')...or that Roger suddenly was.

If next year some up and coming very talented claycourter beats Nadal in say Monte Carlo...does he suddenly become the best on clay?

Whatever your opinion about Fed being on his way out (which I disagree with anyway) - the fact is that at present he is very much still in.
So as of now there is overwhelming evidence in favour of him being the best on hard courts.

If Djokovic wins the USO, beating Federer in the process...then we might have a larger argument in favour of him being best on hard courts over Fed.
But till he wins a best of 5 sets tournament (which at present are only the AO/USO)...I don't think we can say with confidence that Nole is the best.

Especially since just this year Fed won the AO without dropping a single set all the way through, and producing some of his best tennis on the way.

Djokovic is very good on hardcourts and maybe even the second best hardcourt player. But he is not the best on hardcourts. Federer is still the king on grass and hardcourts. Djokovic still has away to go.

Even Italian commentators on SKY Sport said that djoko is a phenomenon and he is the same level as Federer. His improvement in the last weeks are the demonstration of his strenght and i remember you that he goes through the final in indian wells and win miami over nadal. He is very young and he is not yet in his prime. He still can improve his game and if he beat federer now, in the future he will beat federer regularly.

Right now, Federer is still undisputed best on the hard courts.
He haven't lost any matches on grass for a while, because there aren't as many grass tournaments, so Federer haven't had the chance to lose. Federer's record on hard court is just as impressive.

Your last sentence is actually Federrers quote.. he said the same thing for Djokovic and look what happened to him... :D

Dont get me wrong I'm a huge fan of Djokovic but i also think he need to prove him self a little more at USO to get the N#1 at hard coarts

But i dont think that he has a way to go...I think he is pretty close

Ignorance on these boards is rife:
Federer explained in a press conference that he served and volleyed the whole match against Roddick at Kooyong as he didn't want to screw up his groundstroke timing before the AO.
He's a very smart lad, as it turned out he didn't drop a set the whole tournament.
You guys need to start thinking like pros if you want to truly understand how Feds operates before you criticise him.
Djokovic knows this as well, as Federer in a Grand Slam is a whole different ball game.
Federer wouldn't risk injury or ruining his timing a week before a Grand Slam.

alright daddy...whatever helps you sleep at night...djo-ko-vic...got it

Ha ha ! I sleep well thanks , just thought youd like to know .. I am a tennis fan for as long as I live but last time I was able to enjoy a fellow countrymen beating the hell out of someone was Boba Zivojinovic, when he beat McEnroe in aussie semis or something like that in 1985. If you remember he won in 5 sets, last went to 6-0 and whats more important is that while John was arguing with ref Boba just sat on a chair and ate the whole sandwich, beg 5th set. Thats was something. So excuse me if I am a little excited but were kind of a small nation ( 1/3 of NYC ) so gimme a break and let me enjoy ;)

Ps - aussies were on gras back then. Hope you was born then.

This is what I was talking about? Do you really, but let me say this again REALLY think anyone ( wrld nr1 at that ) would let an upcoming star to beat him in no less than master series tournament final ? Tactical move ? I can say I dont want to offend you but that was like exebition and this is masters and if you DO think so, oh my , you are not smart to put it that way.

i like how novak wins a hardcourt event on a big stage, hes suddenly the king. who has the longest grass and hardcourt streaks? federer. who has more slams on hardcourts and masters series on clay? federer.

enough

Yes correct etc. For me all the talk now is about how good will djoko and other guys be in lets say a year from now. 08 - can people predict if fed will continue to dominate or will few other youtngsters get a piece of cake for themselves ? They can obviously but will they ?

No question about present moment , but will the guys mature to challange him any time soon > thats what is the real question for me. As for the posts above and people just laughing at everything , if I was mod here, many would not have half the posts they do ..

Djokovic losing to a "clay specialist" (which I know he's not, excellent all court player) Carlos Moya on a fast hardcourt. How's the King of Hardcourt doing now after that 6-1 thrashing in the second set?

Go to novaks web page, I am not here to argue with you. Nadal witdrew ? Fittest player tennis has seen with knee injury withdraws from cin because of arm injury ? Cmon mate, you need to grow up and face it, at 20 you can lose easily when you have a bad day.

Q: Do you think novak is one of the best hardcourt players today or not ? Would you rate him in top few besides federer, and couple of others ? If your answer is yes, then shut up. If not then switch sports, I hear chess is good.

well. Djokovic still needs to learn how to manage all of these tournaments after losing to Moya.
but back-to-back masters is indeed bad. Fed last year also lost to Murray.

Hey do you guys remember this time last year when Murray was the guy that was going to challenge Federer for Hard Court domination? Yeah, me too...

Is moya better than Sampras... Personally I think not, but after he beat Djoko he has to be close since djoko was so close...

*sigh*

i don't think that federer was bustin his balls in his match djokovic.I think he was warming up for the Open and assessing his competition. if djokovic makes a surprise run to the final i thin federer will crush him, he's just too smart and experienced for djokovic

come on. Federer played his usual good tennis in Montreal, better than Djokovic. Look at the score. But djokovic won the points that mattered in the tiebreaks, so Djokovic won with a better than best performance.

Federer just turned 26, has been in all 3 slam finals this year and winning 2 of them, yet he is on "on his way out soon". Well i just noticed your username, and I forget with most people an adoration of Federer or Nadal requires a boundless hatred for the other one which blinds reality. Forgive me for not factoring in this typical ignorance.

Ok, maybe it was too early to say that Djoko is the best on hard courts, but think how close he got to federer. With 2 set up(having converted the set points he had)it would have been another match. History doesn't count the "if" but we can definetely said that Djoko is a real threat to Federer's Grand Slam reign on hard courts. 2008 can be the right year for the serbian to win his first grand slam! and i guess it will happen!

If Djoko had WON the FIRST SET, Fed would NOT have lost the second set... so its mighty impossible to say that Djoko could have been 2-0 up.

Djokovic is definitely second best on hard courts, but Federer is still first,he won two hardcourt slams and beat Djoko in straight sets in both of them

Djoko is good in hardcourts, but I don't think he has a lot of receipts yet to prove it. For the mean time Fed has my vote, Djoko will have his time, he is inching closer though.

what if tsonga wins the final this weekend? will Djokovic still be the 2nd best hard courter in the world?

Now that djokovic proved he is consistant and good, I would say even if tsonga wins, he would have to, at least imo, prove that he also can repeatedly beat the worlds best and become one of them. Rest of the season is here for him to do so. :)

fair enough. I personally believe that Nadal is the best clay courter, and federer is the second. I belive Federer is the best grass courter, and as much as I hate to say it, Nadal is the 2nd best. I think Federer is the best hard courter, and as of now, there is no second best on hard courts. I'm not sure that Djokovic could beat someone like blake, or Tsonga, someone who can really flatten out the ball and hit through the court.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that no one (other than Federer) has been truly dominant on hard courts. Plenty of players have had solid streaks and flashes of brilliance, but no has really stunned me as an incredible hard court player.

I will only tell you one thing though. Djokovic is way better on grass courts than anyone here rates him. Future champ imo. I hate to be bashed for saying this but believe you me, he toook one set of nadal in semis although heavily fatigued. I am not saying this is proove for that, I just watch him on grass a lot, he lost to Mario Ancic in wimby 2006, who is really a great grass courter himself, having beaten federer in wimbledon year before he started his run. in 2007 Djokovic went on to play back to back 5 setters and then face Nadal heavily fatigued after silly rules which made them play like day to day and Federer rest for 5 days.

Do not reply, just take a note of what I said and remember it. I am sure time will prove me right.
