Federer's results in IW/Miami from 2007 to 2010

2007:
2R/4R - losing both to Canas (5:7 2:6 and 6:7 6:2 5:7)

2008:
SF/QF - losing respectively to Fish (3:6 2:6) and Roddick (6:7 6:4 3:6) respectively

2009:
SF/SF - losing to Murray (3:6 6:4 1:6) and Djokovic (6:3 2:6 3:6) respectively

2010:
3R/4R - losing to Baghdatis (7:5 5:7 6:7; had MPs) and Berdych (4:6 7:6 6:7; had MPs) respectively

What caused Federer's results in these two tournaments go absolutely awol for that 4-year period? Granted, they were never Fed's favorite surfaces and overall condititions, but up to 2007 he was a 3 time IW champ (04, 05, 06) and twice Miami champ (05, 06). From 2007 to 2010 his best results were 3 SFs, which might be good for a guy like Berdych, but not for Roger.

Here are my possible explanations:
1. 2007 - burnout after playing probably his best slam ever - AO 2007.
2. 2008 - still affected by mono, although he claimed he was healed by IW. Even if he really was, the lack of match practice probably played a big role.
3. 2009 - still affected by the AO 2009 final. Don't even get me started on that Miami SF with Djokovic.
4. 2010 - same as after AO 2007.

Nevertheless, Fed's results in IW/Miami for that 4-year span remain one of the biggest mysteries in his career to me. He was in winning position in half of those matches and shouldn't have lost them, imo (Miami 07. 09, 10 and IW 2010).

Federer became very slam focused in those years due to his proximity to the record. He still had the measure of everyone not named Nadal at the slams for the most part but in the masters I think he just had less intensity and focus - plus some of the reasons you mentioned.

I know in 2010 he suffered from a lung infection after AO. That may have had something to do with it.

Federer in 2010 missed anunbelievable chane to win the AO-IW-Miami triple again. At IW and Miami he would have had very easy draws had he just won those matches in which he had MP. Both of those tournaments were very winnable for him.

The canas matches were freak accidents, as were there baghdatis/berdych losses in their own way.
That leaves Fed with 3 SF and a QF on slow outdoor HC, losing to Murray, Novak, and two crowd favorites.

Federer used EPOs just before the Grand Slams started and always performed averagely in M1000.That is the main reason he is so far ahead of Novak in GS titles but equal in M1000

What a profoundly brilliant analysis. Thanks for letting us all know that Roger has "always performed averagely in M1000." Maybe that's why he has 24 of them.

Thanks also for letting the world know Roger only has 17 slams because he "uses EPO's just before the Grand Slams started."

2007: Canas was a returning matchup problem. Canas had beaten him in Toronto 02. A la guys like Tommy Haas, he had played Federer before he was "FEDERER," and believed he could win as a result. Federer didn't have the same mental dominance over him. And as a good defensive player, those are the types that often bother Federer. Just ask Gilles Simon.

2008: Federer was having problems mentally as a result of the beginning of his season being thrown off. He just had a bad season. He'd lose to Stepanek, Blake, and Karlovic before it was over.

2009: Murray and Djokovic. It happens.

2010: Berdych used to be a problem for Federer when they went at it from the baseline. Not sure about Baghdatis.
