Pat Cash : I have heard Nadal say this numerous times. Stop complaining !

Definiely not. And they're not going to change the surface just because Nadal can't win. That' ridiculous. If he wants to win, he better figure out a way to do that. It isn' that difficult. The biggest challenger in his path is a grandpa. So he better stop crying and get to figuring out how to beat the old man.

I mean......didn’t they slow down surfaces so he could win?

Whilst I mostly agree with you that WTF should not change surface, you're still misrepresnting Nadal's argument by framing it in a way you like. You've ignored WHY he wants the change, because to qualify for the WTF you have to play on all surfaces. And unlike Slams and Masters, there are not multiple tournaments on each surface (There's no grass on masters so one could argue that decreases the value of all masters), so asking to change RG to grass is a TOTALLY different thing from asking to change WTF to grass/clay. If you're going to write a fair and just post, consider all sides of the argument.

Nobody in this thread besides you thinks that Nadal is suggesting this for altruistic purposes.

If he pays a truck load of money to sponsor the event on clay in Mallorca, I'm sure the ATP will entertain the request.

1. That's not saying much
2. Never claimed Nadal did this for altruistic purposes lol. But just because it would benefit him, doesn't have to mean it's the opposite.

It's always amusing to see people invoke diversity when it suddenly serves their purposes. (I'm not talking about Nadal ;))

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Federer's response to Nadal's comments

"Fair? I'm not sure if it's the right word. But I think it's right and fair that it's indoors, as well. There is no Masters 1000s on grass. Could it be switched up to clay once in a while? Yeah, maybe. Could we have more 1000s on grass? Yeah, we could have that, too. Could we have less on clay, more on hard courts?"

This is why i really dislike Nadal. All he does is whine about the state of the tour and suggest things that suit him and only him. Doesn't like the idea of shot clock because he can't adapt to speeding up. Doesn't like the ball speed, suggests changing them to suit him. Doesn't like the court surface or speed, suggests they change it. Doesn't like an umpire calling him out on taking forever between points, gets him banned from his matches. Doesn't like losing, he's injured!

Christ, he's honestly the biggest baby on the tour and its a joke that people think he's humble. Where people got that idea is beyond me.

I don't think the GOAT should take career advice from an underachiever (overachiever?) who's now CooCoo Vanderwedgie's b*tch. Nadal should complain away if he wants. My guess is they will finally move it to clay, after he retires.

Nope it’s the same in slams. Like the WTF you still need to qualify for them and you need a ranking unless wildcard. And like nadal you could just get most of your points from clay and qualify for a hardcourt slam. Federer has qualified for RG next year without playing a single clay match by virtue of his other points.

He embodies the 'winning at all costs' attitude.

While that has positive manifestations like a fighting spirit when down on the score line, the ugly side is truly ugly.

At the time they said AO was playing faster than Wimbledon. Faster than it had been in well over a decade. Every player mentioned how much notably faster it was, and most of the big timers were playing at night anyway.

Lighter balls + court surfaced earlier = wicked fast

Doesn't matter. Ball bounce is multifactorial. It depends hugely on temperature and if you played you would know that.

Indoors is not a surface though. But sure, i'm all for variety of conditions throughout the year. The more court conditions they provide, the more variety in style of play they cater to. The more that happens, the better tennis we'll see. Right now it feels like all the lesser players a clone of one another, pretty boring.

I agree with that, was sad to see carpet go

Agree with this man. It would be wonderful to have a carpet event. Would be interesting to see how the dynamics change. Unfortunately, there's almost no chance we'll have carpets again because players kept getting injured leading up to the cessation.

I think it would be cool if they could get a rotation each year of all the surfaces. One year on grass, one year on clay and one year on the current hard court style.

My serve can literally bounce twice as high in high heat. Same court. I don't think it would be possible to have a low bouncing court during the summer in Melbourne unless you were playing on glass.

Indoor HC will bounce lower even if it plays slower.

Why would they? So that Nadal can have a better chance to win it? Because he isn' capable of winning it otherwise?

No, they shouldn't. It' traditionally been a hardcourt indoor even and should remain that way. Those who aren't capable of winning should try to figure out a way.

Normally Nadal would start voicing his absurd suggestions when he is in form and feels that he can win.

One, the winners are less likely to be judged, since everyone is busy praising them and it is the counterintuitive thing to do in such situations.

Two, when he wins he can claim that it is not about his interests, since he doesn't need the additional help.

Conclusion: Nadal is confident in his form right now.

lets hope so!

also, the court is playing faster ad somewhat higher than previously, which helps...

Nadal is too humble and righteous to accept losses off clay as fair play so in the interests of fairness the WTF must be played on clay, Garros or Rome clay not Hamburg because that's not fair.

Faster and higher doesn't make much sense, but whatever.

I hope that Nadal wins it so that the drones shut up once and for all and stop disrespecting this tournament.

I understand that many disagree with Nadal on this, and I'm OK with it. However, I do reckon there is a point to be made that the tournament featuring the eight best players of the season exclusively should rotate the surface, because of its own nature, which is different from that of the rest of the tournies, slams included. You can't seriously sell it as the truly World Tour Finals if it's just another indoor HC event that just happens to feature the eight best players on tour.

Now if you rotate the surface and conditions you'll be truly representing the tour variety as well as showing the world how the eight best players in the world fare while facing each other in different conditions, not in the same ones year after year. It would actually boost the event prestige a lot. The way it is it's just a "special" indoor HC event, but in no way a faithful representation of how the best players in the world fare against each other... Again, unless we want to call it the Indoor Hard Court Season finals. Then I'm okay with it.

I agree with this position, and I don't think it's that controversial.

If the ATP tour marketed the event as the World Indoor Championships, i.e., a culmination to the indoor part of the season, then that would be one thing. And in that case Nadal's point wouldn't make much sense.

But they market the event as the World Tour Finals, and qualify 8 entrants based on their performance across hc, clay, grass and indoor events. So, just like the Super Bowl rotates its host city among turf, dome, natural grass, warm, and cold locations, it would make sense to rotate the WTF both geographically and by surface/conditions.

Nadal isn't even thinking for himself! He is thinking for the future of the game. And Djokovic agrees with Nadal so with their clout it will happen one day.

For Nadal as we saw today it's all about the Majors. I told everyone Nadal would pull out after one match. He doesn't actually care about WTF. Nobody is jusdged on WTF. I've no idea how many Borg and McEnroe and commons won and I bet most people don't without looking them up. Everyone knows the Major tallies though.

It's not all about the Majors. There are only 4 of them. The tour could not survive if it was just about Majors which is something the players understand all too well if not always some of their fans!

It's funny, the whole idea of "major tallies" became a thing in the seventies and eighties.
Also....iirc, the year-end top eight masters event was originally a rotating thing, in the winter, and was generally but not always indoors. The exceptions were a few times at Kooyong, and at the west side club in houston, Texas.

The fact that it was outdoors in Texas during Rafael's junior yrs....is probably why he has this idea it can be outdoors. Then, naturally, the topspinmonkey wonders, why not on terre battue?
