US Open Tennis balls have a run instead of a solid plastic cover

I just opened a case of USOs and there's a ring at the top instead of a solid cover. I think that the ring prevents the ball from falling out after you remove the metal top but it allows any liquid around to get in and the balls can move up and down the tube. It's definitely a different look and feel. I have several solid covers and I'll just put them on the top of the can when I take a new one out and save the solid cover. Strange way to save a few pennies.

It is to save on plastic since a full cover doesn't do much to keep the balls fresh once the can is popped, it also allows to easily pick them up like a hopper. My bag doesn't have liquid in it so the full lid didn't do anything to protect the balls.

It is a few pennies, but when multiplied across their quantities of cans is a LOT of savings, they can also publicize the green effect it has on plastic production.

My most recent purchase of W. Championship balls had the same thing. Less plastic in the ocean is a good thing. I didn't realize the ring would still keep the balls in. I like having a way to close the can, but I'm willing to sacrifice it to keep the ocean and beaches clean(er).

Can't you just keep a full one around to move from can to can?

Well,

With the Wilson 'ring lid " can you can tell that it's a *used can* before cracking the cap and going "D'oh" when you see they were already opened.

I don't put balls back in the can for this reason; after first play they go in a fishnet nylon bag (reused from Penn practice balls).

Therefore I always know, "Any cans in my bag are sealed & new." Recommended.

the ring keeps the ball half out and they may as well skip the ring all together. If they really want to save the environment they should ve made the balls last longer but they choose not to.

I just squeeze the can to determine whether it's new or not. Is this just Wilson or do the other companies also do it?

The tennis ball can rings remind me of write rings.
