I've been to Mason's and unless I missed something, it didn't impress me in any way as being "legendary". I do think it's been around a long time (at another location before the current one), so maybe that is what you mean by legendary..."established".

Sales at Mason's? Good luck there, my British friend. I doubt they've ever had one, and the selection is pretty thin. Go to the other store HeyCal mentioned, on 18th & Broadway. Its name begins with a "P". Or, if you care about saving money, buy online. Tennis Warehouse actually works for me.
Since I had never been to Mason's myself, I purposely took precautions and prefaced the word legendary with "supposedly".
I'd never been until tonight, that is. After playing 2 hours of tennis in the cold night air under the lights on show court number 7 with seating for a thousand at the US Open facility like you should do my British bloke, I stopped by Mason's to check it out with my partner. The fact that it was closed deterred us not at all, and I felt I could get could a sense of the place just by looking in their large storefront windows.
My verdict? Unless there is some back room or upstairs I'm not aware of, the place on 18th and Broadway has a better and larger collection of tennis accoutrements. That being said, the fact that Mason's is solely a tennis shop and certainly has more tennis stuff than your average sporting goods store makes it worthwhile to visit if you're a tennis nut and already somewhere near that neighborhood, as I believe you will be since your hotel appears to be just five blocks south.

Again - thanks both. I'll pop into both and see what they have to offer. I also use Tennis Warehouse, but mainly for buying overgrips in bulk. They're pretty quick on delivery - never had to wait more than a couple of days even though delivery states up to 3 weeks.
Mike - I'm definitely going over to Queens (I have family over there to visit). Can I book a court in advance and how do I do this?

I don't know who the heck "Mike" is, but you can call the National Tennis Center in Queens at 718-760-6200, extension 0 about reserving a court. This time of year, they generally have so many outdoor courts available they may not bother taking your reservation but just tell you to come on by. Last night, my friend and I were the only ones playing outside from 10 to midnight on the some-20 courts available. Yes, aside from the wimps playing inside the bubble, the grounds were completely deserted except for us two boys battling it out under the blazing lights on a primo show court on the hallowed and historic grounds of the mecca of United States tennis. The fact that we both suck (and no longer qualify as "boys"), made it no less glamorous and exciting...
But if you do go out there and play outside, tell them you really want a nice show court like number 7 or 11, which are the two biggest courts after Ashe, Amstrong, and Grandstand. (You allegedly can rent Ashe for 1500 dollars, by the way.) Courts number 4 and 10 and 13 are ok too. You can look at the site map and see the relative size of each one on their website, or on the little map to the left of the front desk. If you want to play inside on the way less glamorous US Open practice courts, reserve a court in the bubble to the left of the front desk, in what I think they call the "P" courts, as opposed to the other side, which might be called the "A" side -- I think the courts are better in P.

yeah. forget about mason's for low prices. they wanted 250+ for a yonex rds001 while another retailer a block and a half west had it priced the same as tw. (starts with "g")
on top of that, you'll get awful service and a condescending attitude. all the more reason to avoid that place.

Even though Arthur Ashe is my inspration, I don't think that I can justify the $1500 price tag with the missus - only because she'll be playing with me and I wouldn't be able to get away with it!

I'm suspicious anyway of the 1500 dollar figure the front desk guy mentioned. Seems low to me. Maybe that's per hour, with a multi-hour minimum, and/or it's the daytime rate without needing all those lights on. Still, I am considering having my bar mitzvah there...

It's called *******. I used to buy my baseball equipment there. I don't know about their tennis stuff. It's a typical New York store ... cramped, fast-paced for quick sales.

as stated: P'agon is the best place, largest selection of frames, etc., but does not hold a candle to TW, so not worth it for anything but balls. masons blows.
from hotel> goto 51st & Lexington, get on 6, downtown. get off union square (14th). by foot> pick-up broadway going N to 18th st. completely unremarkable. if you're looking for some culture go south of 14th street>everything else is a grave yard.

The only other tennis store I know of in Manhattan is "Grand Central". Located on 44th between Madison Avenue and Grand Central Terminal. As far as outdoor courts, Central Park has courts. For indoors, there's a bubble under the Queensborough Bridge, but I can't recall the name?
Fell asleep during the shows - because of the time difference and my body not adjusting quickly enough!! Still, we went to some fab restuarants - 21 Club, River Cafe (where I proposed!) We were treated real special - thanks New York! Just a real shame no tennis! I made her promise that we'll do the US Open though - yippee!

Sutton East Tennis, or something like that. VERY expensive red clay courts. Several more outdoor courts besides Central Park, and some other bubbles in Manhattan as well.
I have a feeling Owen will continue getting information and recommedations on New York through this thread long after his trip has already come and gone...

Yup. You'll be lucky if she lets you wander down to the muni courts to watch a match between your buddies now.
