The animal appreciation thread

Such an emotional story. I think she wasn't precisely doing a "head count" as the fireman said, but probably identifying her litter by their smell. Even I can tell my own cats have quite distinctive smells.

This one impressed me the other day. As much as one would like to rationalize the situation with a more scientific approach, like saying the cat's action was influenced by a need to defend its territory from an invader (which is also the case)... it really appears as described.
Yeah, that is another great story. I saw it a while back. That cat goes in with everything and no fear whatsoever. He probably saved the baby's life too, by the looks of it. Pretty amazing what cats can do!

I agree about the cat smells. They have distinctive smells. I can remember now the smells of my two cats, and they bring very pleasant memories. I am also familiar with dog smells, but unfortunately they don't tend to be on the pleasant side.

What is human smell supposed to do? Because most of the human smells I can think of are not very attractive to me.
Interesting fact regarding a recent experiment:

They had a test group of women, of which they tracked their menstrual cycle. When the women were ovulating, the researchers found a stark preference for the smell of T-shirts worn by symmetrical men (I kid you not!). This is without them knowing who wore the respective T-Shirt of course.

It makes sense. If you have three armpits the smell is probably worse than if you only have two. :D

HAHA. No, it's not my chihuahua. It's just a chihuahua I found a GIF of online. It seems the dog got in some kind of trouble and he is ashamed.

If I remember correctly you do have chihuahuas, don't you?

Ah, ok... I thought I would've known if you owned chihuahuas (great GIF)... yes, I share three with an ex... Nube, her daughter Chiquita, and Senorita Zorrita (not pictured)

HAHA. Cute animals, aren't they! :D

I hope Zorrita is not as promiscuous as her name might indicate, and is just due to her resemblance to a fox. ;)

One of my cruel inhumane neighbor got 2 goats and tied them to a tree in front of the house. At first I wondered, why the goats are tied because non-vegeterians generally buy meat, but then I realised the poor goats are getting prepared for slaughtering. They are feeding the 2 poor goats and I cannot bear the sounds they are making now, they are alive at this point and they will be dead by tomorrow this time for his daawat(hindi)/partylike celebration..i think he is the stupid animal and deserve a birth as such....I am helpless and sad!

That takes me back many years. Even our neighbours tied a goat up on their terrace, right next to my room. and it would bleat all night.

But by their standards, it is not cruel or inhumane. I guess it depends on what environment you grow up in.
otoh, I have had strict vegetarian bosses who were cruel with other humans.

I'm not excusing any faulty behaviour. But I find what the west does, in its far bigger and industrial scale, whilst impulsed by mindless and ever-expanding consumerism, far more cruel.

The deeper one thinks about it the more one questions reality, and how the future is up to no good. But I also tend to find peace in some of the eastern schools of spirituality. They have some things far more well thought out, and that includes animal life, experience and reality.

Anyway, here are some amazing video previews, samples and doc cinematographic footage that I've watched recently. Quite motivational even.

The last one is such a nightmare fuel. All those snakes popping out of the rocks. Surreal.

I don't know what precisely you refer to, but we are losing badly. The younger generations today ape the west without thinking. It's just cool to ape the west even if you don't understand what it is you are doing. That includes drugs. To some of us it looks more like people from the West are re-discovering our culture, which we are rejecting without understanding or acquainting ourselves with.

To be fair, there are good things from many different sources. Socially speaking, I think Northern Europe (Scandinavia in particular) has the best system. In terms of customs, perhaps Southern Europe / Asia.

There are good and bad things everywhere, so you shouldn't compare areas in these matters. This leads to labeling people inferior or superior.

Please, not this PC bullcrap again.

Nobody said anything about people. There are good and bad persons everywhere. I was talking about societies or cultures.

Of course there are superior societies and cultures. Western societies (from Ancient Greece, to Western Europe, to the United States and Canada) have refined the system to be more fair, effective, and tolerant. Some crapholes are still at a Middle Ages level culturally and socially speaking.

Cultural and moral relativism is moronic to say the least. Not to mention hypocritical. I don't see many people like you emigrating to Saudi Arabia, for example.

Who are you kidding? Me ?
It is empiricism, not materialism. Which means looking at the world as it is, without preconceived notions, kind of what Buddhism originally was.
Please don't derail the thread.
This is about animals.

Not your rants based on a complete misunderstanding of topics way above your head.

Don't ape the west, we are trash by and large

Unfortunate state of affairs. They are being marginalized to lower castes and more rural places right? Preserving culture, customs and beliefs is a battle, no less important than any other kind I find. Been using the theme ironically in some of my posts recently (mourning threads of 90's clay demise) but I seriously mean it.

Specifically, what are these things?
Oh hello. Not often I'm addressed by one of the legends himself.

I had a bunch of things in mind when I mentioned that line, for what was relevant to comment was a deeper understanding of animal experience and purpose. The same teachings apply to human experience as well. Also an alternatively broad understanding of human and world history, interestingly very aligned with a number of other traditions and beliefs from other peoples.

----

Nice to see the animal looks happy and well cared in his enclosure. Amazing acrobatics.

Calling @-NN- to watch this one. :D

This one impressed me. I didn't think it was possible to befriend and have a relationship with a big crocodile to such extent.

Are you talking about Panchatantra and Jataka tales?
