Drive slice bh

@IowaGuy posted a vid of his awesome slice bh so I figured I would dust mine off. His iirc is much better. But considering that i dont hit slice unless i am forced to or want to hit short returns in dubs, i did pretty well after a bit

What seemed to work best was a slow takeback followed by a fast swing

Nice work like the Happy feet between shots.

I think it was too tennis training had a good vid showing 3 types of follow through depending on the height of the ball.

Nice. What do we do with that follow through though?!

@Shroud you need to extend ur left arm and stay sideways and balanced after the swing, I used to have this problem of overrotating too and my slice bh was extremely inconsistent.

Now that ive fixed it a bit (still not perfect) its much less inconsistent, even tho its still inconsistent :D:D:D

@Shroud,

A few comments:

- you have a relatively slow takeback but a relatively fast swing. Try experimenting with a quicker takeback so you don't have to rush the initial change in direction, which might be causing some of your accuracy issues

- try to engage your legs a bit more

- try to keep your head down and locked on the contact point

Pretty soon, you'll be looking like Dolgo at 1:15:

Notice that he has the giant follow-through because he's swinging so hard. I guess I never try to swing that hard so my follow-through is much more limited.

Haha. I looked at those happy feet and just thought i was tired. I forgot that I used to run back to the middle then move to the shot when I would hit against the machine.

Got a link?

Guilty of the head thing

I meantioned that the slow takeback seemed to work better for some reason. Faster seemed to be more problematic. Or do you mean earlier?

Yep dolgo is what i had in mind. I checked out a few pros and they seem to open up more these days and have a big follow through.

You appear to be emphasizing the slice part of the drive slice by trying to generate spin rather than drive it deep. That will make the shot more unreliable. But when it works it's sweet.

Hey ... that's pretty good for not having current reps. You have the racquet head up high behind your head which is what it takes to hit that IG's. The problem is from there with a steep high to low to contact is a big timing challenge. Most rec players are going to have a tradeoff between accuracy and bigger pace and spin. I have experimented with the higher take back since IG's video ... have to say it's fun to see extra bite on the slice... even if it doesn't help to win more.

fyi ... if you are going to play doubles with that follow through you have to play deuce side.

I think in a pressure situation against pace you'd have a lot of balls flying away on you with this much swing especially the FT that'll sweeps under and up almost like a baseball home run swing. I think keep stance and ft more closed through whole stroke, more compact ft.

Also you might want to shorten the time between feeds on the ball machine so you need to get back to ready position quicker, more realistic. That will help eliminate that big driving range, admire-the-shot follow through.

Yikes. You are right. But can you explain why early prep almost always leads to a missed shot for me? More time and it gets worse

Just timing and rhythm. You start your swing as soon as you finish your take back. Some people hold the racket back with their left hand while they are waiting to start their swing. You don't have that pause.

Found it. Best vid I ve seen.

Slow enough for me to understand

And of course the slice drop shot is different again so that gives you your three different follow throughs

Hi Shroud to my amateur eye it looks like a timing issue there, where you think you are holding in the takeback position you have just really slowed down the first part of your swing while you are waiting for the ball to come into your strike zone, then accelerating from a mid point in your stoke rather than the start. Particularly on your forehand, when your left hand comes off the racquet while you are waiting, the right hand kinda really wants to start the swing. To prevent that I personally keep my left hand on the racquet for as long as possible, just to stop myself slowly dropping the racquet down too early.

Backhands looked good, if your partner really started hitting harder I'm sure you'd see the benefit on that side. Good luck mate, don't give up on trying the early take back.

Thanks i will keep at it though i find myself very skeptical. More i think the worse it is. More time more thought

Thanks man. Sadly there is no setting for that. I can just run around more

Have been playing the duece but rarely slice in dubs. And i hate 1st in so i hate duece

"earlier". You have plenty of time but are, IMO, late. And then you have to rush the forward component to compensate.
You could text me that i have a bh coming may 23, 2056 and i would still be late. And i would be thinking of all the ways i could miss the shot

That overly unnecessary and superfluous follow-thru...
Giving me flashbacks of @oserver ‘s 360 serves.

Trauma.

Haha, you haven't see my new 360 serves with a passive (slow) arm yet, have you?

However, fore long slice or volley shots, I'll refrain from proposing a passive arm.

@Shroud ... you inspired me to hit a hopper of @IowaGuy slice BHs today. The ball made such a buzzing sound, my friend thought they were running a weed eater outside the court. I tried videoing it ... but the spin frequency kept turning off my iPhone.

I had a bunch of cicadas in the background buzzing away. It probably created and interference field protecting the camera. Or maybe its because sound travels faster when its humid and there is 200% humidity here??

OMG,,, STINKS. this is BAD slice technique that will make you make unforced error in 3 out of 5 shots. Unstable and finishing to the side with NO control. Learn this and you will be hitting Backhand Slice at 75 MPH and for clean winners past 5.0 guys.

I am surprised sound travels at all in Florida. I have never lived anywhere without bigtime humidity. I would not have missed it.

this 1960's technique is the Correct technique. that is why you see so many BAD slice backhands in Pro tennis today.. Novak's slice backhand is so sucky, I hope no junior sees that.....pure embarrasment

Couldn't quite make out what the ball was doing after your shot as it was going right into the floodlight glare. But it seemed to be looping up and slowing down. If drive slice is what you're going after, you need more drive and less of cutting the ball. Try watching some of Graf's videos because she had a hybrid technique, not as old school as Rosewall but still with a lot of drive at least when she wanted to.

Leftie Feliciano Lopez has had a very long and successful career. In about 2014 or so, I went to a match to look at his backhand drive. He hardly did any backhand drives, most were slices, estimate 80% slices.

I searched his backhand drive and one website had him listed as 'one of the worse ten one hand backhand drives'. But his slice backhand has the opposite reputation. He has a very good serve also.

I have not looked at many backhand slices. The upper body for the backhand slice does not seem to move much, in sharp contrast to the top spin drive.

The one slice is at 1:20.

Shroud's OP "slice drive" has very high speed upper body turn.

I don't know anything about the "slice drive". Is the one hand backhand "slice drive" shown in a pro video?

Completely agree that high upper body rotation isn't really required for the slice. That's one shot where you should take the time to carve the ball, rather than trying to whack it.
