In Game, Schett & Mats last night, they said Rafa is very popular with the French crowd now considering in his early years their attitude towards him was due to a line judge calling Grosjean’s ball out in 2005, Rafa’s first RG tournament. Grosjean asked Carlos Ramos, who was calling the match, to go and check the mark. Ramos refused because the ball was obviously out so Grosjean sent for the tournament supervisor who went with the umpire’s decision so the crowd started booing Rafa’s errors. Anyway, the match was carried over to the next day and, of course, Rafa went on to win it and his first RG title. But now, they say, Rafa is very popular with the French crowd and gets a lot of support from them.

Federer's fans like to claim that The French don't like Rafa because they want Federer to be the King of RG. Evidently not the case.

Saw at the beginning of an interview video (think it might have been of his presser today) a reporter noted it was Kids Day at RG and she asked a whole bunch of kids around the grounds who their favourite player was and they all said RAFA RAFA RAFA.!!! :) Unfortunately she followed it up with a dumb question "Why do you think all the kids like you so much?" which left poor shy humble Rafa stumbling and mumbling in his response. :D

Rafa won also the 11th and Babolat made the undecima (maybe never sold). Nadal is playing all the clay season with this old setup, instead of promoting the brand new Pure Aero. I womder why.

Rafa uses the equipment Babolat produces&prepares for him. During the clay season, he played with the La Decima racquet (instead of the 2019 Pure Aero paintjob) obviously because of its color scheme - the orange symbolizes the (Parisian) clay.

The ATP is commemorating the historic win of Soderling over Rafa 10 years ago today at RG. Rafa is such a phenomenon, they see that loss as one of the wonders in sporting history.

"Although the Swede's triumph resonated then, too, it is perhaps even more impressive today. After beating Belgian David Goffin Friday, Nadal has won 68 of his 69 matches at Roland Garros since that loss to Soderling. The 32-year-old has also added seven Coupe des Mousquetaires to his trophy cabinet, making 11 total at the clay-court Grand Slam."

Nadal is epic!

Rafa's 'murder draw' continues, some nobody Colombian in the R16.
Come on, smoledman, I know you are a fair poster. You know this is Nadal News, not the most appropriate place to post this kind of stuff. By the way, Goffin (#27 in the world and former #7) is a tougher rival than anything Federer has faced so far, but that is a different topic. How would you feel if I enter in the Federer News thread and post something like "Casper and Mayer, what a joke of draw compared with a much tougher opponent like Goffin"?

As a general rule, I think it is better to let the "Federer News", "Nadal News", "Djokovic News" and similar threads as pacific places where the players in question are not attacked. Feel free to criticize Nadal in the General section though. :)

This kind of comments make me think that logic isn’t a thing for Nadal haters.

Last year they whined that Thiem, Del Potro and Schwartzman are weak opposition, this year they are strong opposition, but if only they were in Nadal’s draw they’d remain weak.
They know that Rafa makes everyone look weak.

Mayer is better than Londero but the difference is not as great as that between the Goffin level and Ruud's.
The fans should not dramatize each time their hated player faces supposedly easy opponents while their beloved player does not face in all rounds precisely the titans of the sport.
This is a matter for children and adolescents, frankly.

Goffin is on a decline though. Nadal should have beaten him in straight sets.

are you joking?
Goffin would have defeated Ruud with some comfort today.
Maybe in the future, the Norwegian boy has a better career than the Belgian, but today, there is a big difference in level between both players.
It is not good to misunderstand how you do it.

You should win the Most Pessimistic Nadal fan prize though. You always see everything black, and then you get surprised when reality was not so bad. For instance, you predicted Nole to defeat Rafa in 2 in Rome, and then you saw reality is not so black as you picture it in your mind.

On point, while it is true that Goffin has had a bad year (not sure if we can talk of "decline" when he is only 28), this Roland-Garros he was playing so good. He won his first two matches in straight sets. I don't think it is so bad if Nadal lost a set, as it was some kind of test. Now, can Nadal play better? Yes, of course.

Well, today Goffin didn't play well in the first two sets. In the third Nadal slowed down a bit and it was enough for Goffin to take the set.

I agree, in the first set and a half Goffin shots were weak and then he realized he had to be more offensive. In the third set Nadal did not play that good, as he was constantly hitting to Goffin's forehand and making weak returns (which allowed Goffin to make easy drop shots). In the fourth set Nadal improved enough to change the situation and returned deeper and started to attack his backhand. Nadal still can improve, but it was a good test for a 3th round, I think.

IMO the most important question is does he have the stamina to play long matches. In all 3 matches his level dropped a bit after two sets.

Yes, he has the stamina. I don't think it was a matter of stamina, as I told you Goffin increased his level in the third and Nadal found solutions in the fourth. Stamina is maintained with age relatively well. That is why you see many athletes competing in marathon runs of long distance well in their 40s. Nadal is only 33, so I don't think his stamina is the problem.
