Baghdatis has a new coach now

Apparently Baghdatis changed coach now and his new coach is Yiannos Hadjigeorghiou who, if I remember well, is the Cyprus Davis cup coach and former player for the Cyprus national team.

http://www.baghdatis.com/profile-marcos.html

The unfortunate fact of this situation is that he was the worst player of the Davis Cup team with 20 losses in 20 matches and he has no experience in coaching players at the top level of play!!!

This shows that Baghdatis chose him just because he knows him and this shows that he doesn't have any ambition at all but instead takes things very lightly and easily without any serious consideration. It's a shame because this guy could be a very good top 20 player if he was a bit more professional but now I see him falling down the rankings like a stone if he doesn't change his way of thinking and acting.

His ex-coach is the father (or is it step father?) of his (gorgeous!) ex-girlfriend. When she ditched him, his tennis went south and I guess his relationship with his coach suffered. Just my personal theory.

Probably you're right but he could choose a better coach than Yiannos for sure.

baghdatis72,
i don't remember any top player lennart bergelin has coached before bjorn borg, so he didn't have any experience either. i don't say that this new coach is good or bad because i do not have absolutely any information to rely on, but in a coache's "life" there always is a first time. you come from nowhere and end up with a top player. time will show us if he knows what to do or not. the fact that he hasn't coached any top player so far is by no means indicative that he doesn't know his business.

I think the point of baghdatis72 is that Marcos should have hired an experienced coach not a novice, a lá Andy Murray, R. Federer, Safin, T. Henman, et als. For a novice, he should stay with Lennart Bergelin. After all, money should not be a problem for Marcos.

rbm,
i was very well aware of baghdatis72's point - i just wanted to point out that every experienced coach once was a novice. i myself simply haven't heard of anyone being born directly as an experienced coach.:D
one of the most important things in coaching is not so much the experience (there's really lot's of people out there that know quite a lot about all sides of tennis) but the chemistry that should work between the player and the coach. you can take a very promising player and a very experienced coach and if they do not connect, you don't get anything else but two frustrated individuals.

fgs and RMB I see your points there and I understand your point. However, a coach who failed to do any good to a Davis Cup team for many many years doesn't seem very promising to me for a player who used to be no 8 and now no 19 and needs serious improvement to play an important role to the future of the ATP and perhaps become a regular top 10 player.

We have all seen what Bags can do with his racket and it's annoying to see him change coach to someone whose skills as a coach are unknown and his connection to the ATP was non existent until now.

I got new information now about the change of coach. It seems that Marcos and Yiannos have a long history and he can support him better than anyone. The Cyprus Tennis Federation decided to end the contract of Yiannos for the Davis Cup team so that he can focus on Marcos and lead him to success. It seems that they are highly motivated and I hope that his new coach can make a difference to his performance and ranking for the good :D

baghdatis72,
i hope it will work out for them properly and we will see marcos reach his potential.
the funny thing with coaches is that we are working "with the client's material". there are really quite a lot of promising boys and girls out there, but in the end only a few will really make it to the top of the tour. if you have "bad luck" as a coach, your players will get stuck somewhere in the 300-500s and in spite of having everything needed to get further, there's always things that are out of your reach to influence - from sponsoring to girlfriends/boyfriends.

Yes I know and that makes the players in the top 100 and their coaches even more successful than they already look. I guess you need to live it to realize what happens.

Well he reached Munich semi final and that's an improvement from all the 1st round exits he has been having in the last tournaments. He also had a slight injury on his left foot and the surface was clay so the coach change is not so bad for the time being.
