Bresnik Suing Dominic Thiem’s Family

"Newly crowned US Open champion Dominic Thiem and his family face a lawsuit from his former coach. This is just days after the third-ranked Austrian won his maiden major title in New York."

Stand out quote from Dominic's father:
“He taught him certain things, no question about it,” Wolfgang Thiem said about Bresnik’s influence. “But from my point of view, very, very, little has progressed in the last four or five years.”

So in order for him to feel understood and respected, he needs to sue them and get lots of money? How surprising.
He devoted his coaching life to developing this kid basically from birth. And then seconds before it all pays off in a big way, he gets ditched.

I can certainly see his point of view, but I don't know how he's going to win this legally. He must have found some angle though.

Thiem is already with Massu for more than one year. If there’s room for a former coach to sue like this, no player that has achieved success after a change of coach is safe.

Didn't know it had gotten so ugly between Team Thiem and Bresnik. While the former coach's resentment is understandable I'm guessing he worked not as an employee but as an independent contractor. If so his suit is pretty much DOA (unless there's something truly egregious we don't know about).

Thanks to you, today I learned the meaning of DOA. I already knew the meaning of egregious, for the record.

Maybe it paid of because he was ditched ....

He should have been ditched after RG 2017 when Thiem beat Djokovic only to get pummeled by Nadal.
This coach was lucky to eek out a couple more years on the pay roll.

Don't the Thiem family have a rep for money-grubbing?

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the coach as the bad guy.
We know **** all. All we know is the claim that "Thiem would be Futures player without me" sounds salty, Thiem made leaps of improvement after ditching Bresnik, and the timing of this lawsuit is weird, though it's probably been in the works for a while.

Are you suggesting that the reason Thiem won US Open is because of his dramatic improvement in play? And that now with Massu he's going to be regularly beating Djokokvic and Rafa (on clay)? And that even if he does, it's down to Thiem's amazing play and not the Big 3 declining?

It seems to me there were any number of threads bemoaning the crap play in the US Open final. I don't happen to agree with that, but I certainly don't think Thiem is now the favorite against Nadal and Djokovic.

No, I'm saying Thiem was struggling to play two strong performances back to back when he was 24 and an established player. That should have been enough to fire Bresnik.
Wow, you seem to have put a lot of words in my mouth there! I'm not even going to comment on all that. I have not said anything like what you are implying I said. All I said was...well, read it again- Bresnik should have been fired when Thiem seemed unable to follow up one big win and play a decent next match.

Are you thinking that in this French Open he's at the level to play well enough to beat Djokovic and then play a "decent" match against Nadal the next day? I don't.

Yes, I agree that in this sports environment, you fire the coach. But I'm not seeing the "leaps of improvement" Red Rick is seeing.

At the AO, didn't he beat Rafa and then lead Djokovic 2 sets to 1?
He doesn't have to beat them. He just has to be able to put in a good mental performance in the second match. Beating them would be better. Personally, if he did not beat them, then I would not be against Thiem firing Massu and getting another coach.
You do have a point- the USO is not really indicative of a huge improvement. He beat a field he should beat, no more no less.

In fact, @r2473 the way Thiem played in the first two sets and a bit, it seemed like he had stalled a little, even regressed.
Had Thiem lost, then Massu should have been fired.
Lucky for Thiem, Zverev choked.

That's a huge achievement mentally. And I think he does play with more belief now than he did a few years ago. Jumping on your comment above, he did lose the first 2 sets, but then came back from 0-2. That's a pretty big deal. But then again, he was playing Zverev (a guy who's obviously also not won a slam), not Nadal or Djokovic.

I hope he wins the French Open. God, anyone but Nadal or Djokovic.

If there is a clause in the contract stating that he should be paid a bonus (say for a Slam win) or a % of future earnings for a limited time after getting fired, then it might not be a frivolous lawsuit. It is common for performance-based compensation contracts to have bonuses/commissions apply for a specific period after termination as long as the termination is not for ‘Just Cause’. For instance if the sales cycle to close deals for a salesperson or distribution company is 6 months in a particular industry, the compensation contract might state that commissions will be paid (either in full or partially) for sales orders received up to six months after the termination date.

If Bresnik is just trying to sue him because he coached him for a long time, he probably is trying to get an out-of-court settlement. What makes it more interesting is that Thiem‘s father was a coach at Bresnik’s academy for most of Thiem’s childhood and that’s part of why Bresnik was involved with coaching him - possible that they never had too many written contracts in that case and Bresnik just feels entitled to a % of Thiem‘s earnings especially because the split was not amicable.

As a fan, all I can see is that Thiem‘s hard court game, on-court strategy, willingness to hit the slice and shot-tolerance in general has increased significantly since Massu took over. Thiem has more confidence and belief in himself as a result and his performance is now consistently at a Top 3 level in the world whereas previously it was only at a Top 10 level.

Yeah. I could also imagine the suit isn't even about prize money from now but maybe over 2019?

When did they split anyway? Around AO 2019?

Maybe the lifelong coach was the problem? Held Thiem back from winning in big tournaments. To bad that the former coach felt that a lawsuit against a former student will solve his problem(s). Why could Thiem do the same under your watch?

If Novak smashes another linesman Thiem will win. Otherwise probably no.
