I've heard about the French's players weak mentals and choking for a long time... well they aren't disappointing in this French Open!

- Gasquet was up 5-2 + serve in the first set against RBA. Lost his serve at 5-2 AND at 5-4, lost the 1st set in tie break and got destroyed 76 62 61.

- Mayot was uo 5-3 in the first set, served for the set and missed 2 SP. He lost the set in tie-break and later lost 76 63 75

- Halys led 2 sets to 1 + break in the 4th set against Giron. Was 2 pts away from the win several times. Lost 7-5 in the 4th set tie-break and lost 8-6 in the 5th.

- Simon led 5-3 40-0 on his serve in the 2nd set against Shapopalov. Missed 3 set points in a row + other set points later. Also missed set points at 5-2. Lot the set 7-5 and then lost the match.

- Monfils won the first 3 games of the match against Bublik, had double-break points and then lost the set 6-4. Lost the match in 4 sets.

- Chardy led 2 sets to 0 + break in the 3rd against Rodionov. He even served for the match had MP in the 3rd set tie-break. Lost the tie-break 8-6 and lost 10-8 in the 5th set.

- Moutet won the 1st set 6-0 and 4th set 6-2 agant Giustino. Lost the 2nd set tie-break 9-7 after 2 SP. He served for the match 4 times in the 5th set and lost 18-16.

- Mladenovic (after the 6-1 5-1 40-0 loss aganst Grathcheva in NY) was up 5-1 30-40 in the 1st set against Sigmünd. She missed 2 SP at 5-1, 1 SP at 5-2 and 4 SP at 5-3. She went from 5-1 to 5-7 3-6 in a heartbeat.

This is never gonna stop. I really feel bad for them.

Still her fault for letting the lead slip (she had other set points in addition to that one)

Kinda like how Nadal was basically robbed in the 2005 Miami final but it’s still his fault for proceeding to blow a 2-set lead.
I mean yes but hard not to feel bad when you know you’re robbed of set point. Need to be mentally strong which unfortunately Mladenovic is known not to be.

True. I'm still kind of suprised that Mladenovic let Siegemund skate on this. She's definitely right to be angry at the chair umpire, who should never have missed it in the first place.

Not to focus too much on Siegemund but this is actually the second time ive seen something like this from her this year. definitely an "umpire's call" type of player even if she knows it's the wrong one (and she is not alone there).

Yes, there is a mental problem with this generation. Not rarely you can hear some frenchies complaining or whining or showing lack of self-esteem in a really bad way. Gasquet, Paire and even Tsonga are good examples of this. That’s pretty sad because Gasquet or Monfils had a great potential IMO, and they seem to be good people. In addition Monfils has always been looking like a gifted and naturally athletic gifted lacking dedication.
But things are changing a little bit. I think players like Pouille and Humbert show a better mindset and the french federation seems to understand that mental is a key aspect when it comes to build young players. Unfortunately, Pouille is facing repeated injuries and may be not as gifted as were Monfils, Gasquet and Tsonga.
Future does not look bright for french tennis in the middle term, because I don’t see young players with enough physical and technical potential to become a contender for a slam win. I hope I am wrong.

This is chocking, pronounced with a French “ch”.

Simon could have won the second set if it wasn’t by his sportsmanship.
He agreed with Shapo that a set point in Simon’s favor needed to be replayed when the umpire was already awarding it to him. Point was replayed, and he then lost the set point, same as others he had, and then the second set.
At payback time, later in the third set, Shapo did not follow suit in a point in he could have returned the gentlemanly gesture.

Too bad for Monfils, he won two tournaments at the start of the season, no Monfils, Gasquet, Simon, Tsonga in the second round it hasn’t happened since 2004.

Good work OP. In one of the last few seasons, the somewhat severe underperformance by the French men was examined but never in this level of detail.

Possibly the only one with a legit excuse for underperforming (Paire) is the only one actually left in the tournament.

The most mercurial of the lot is the last bastion of hope. Inb4 he inevitably goes down in flames.

Clara Brunel is the french revelation of the tournament, W.C ranked 357 and now she is in the third round, she was a little nervous at the end of the match, but i love his attitude on the court, no complaining.

The one that has made it furthest is the youngest of the bunch..Hugo Gaston turned 20 the day before RG started.

Gaston is too young to know how to chock.
Gaston seems to be an interesting player with atypical playstyle. Still young and low ranked...future will tell what he can achieve. He is definitely skilled but also small and maybe lacking on the power side. Anyway, it is always nice to see new players, especially when their game is out of the ordinary. Feel free to comment on Hugo Gaston official thread to prove wrong those who told me that thread would be a long shot ;)

'Chauque' seems better to me.

I wonder if anyone made a bet that Gaston would be the last Frenchman in the tournament. All squared up with Stan in the third, it is, shall we say, a chauquing scene.

I'm here all week.
