The Kyrgios Serve

Ok, so love the guy or hate him, his serve is kinda impressive. I've been watching his 1st round match and I can't seem to pin down what it is. It looks like to has a more extreme grip on his serve but he could just be rotating it. He also has a ton of disguise which makes it harder to predict where it's going.

What are y'all's thoughts?

From youtube analysis that I've watched, he tosses the ball lower and hits the ball at a lower height than a lot of players.

How about McEnroe's thoughts? In 2018 he said, "Isner has a higher velocity serve, but I'm going with Nick's serve. It moves around the box more and explodes on impact. Best serve on tour I think."

I'd agree. He gets good action and it seems to push through the court more after impact. Combine that with not being able to predict where it's going and it makes it lethal. I was just cracking up after he finished his service game in 52 seconds.

serve is huge and he’s fearless. He’s said that he plays around on return of serve using a large variety of shots because he knows he’s going to win his serve. That’s a big advantage

You are correct on this one. Shorter toss and his motion to get it up to the ball is really fast. It's not smooth and flowing but more sharp and violent. He brings his racquet up fast and then just goes straight at the ball.

And he continuously keeps his opponents off balance because you never know what shot he's going to hit because he will try anything at any time. Sure he misses some but he also wins a good number of those points too.

His ball toss is right at his peak of reach and he doesn't wait for the ball to fall into his contact point. He has a slight lag on the windup that enables him to really accelerate into impact. Reminds me of the Roscoe tanner service except Nick has a full stretch of his tossing arm whereas Tanner hit the ball on the way up rather than at the full peak of his toss.
