Citi Open, ATP-500 in Washington

To be held From July 31 - August 8

Rafa: “I am very excited to come to Washington for the first time. I have never been there and it’s one more place I wanted to come and play. I am looking forward to playing again and Washington shall be the best start for the US Summer Swing for me. Looking forward to seeing again my US fans that I haven’t seen since I won the 2019 US Open in NYC!. Vamos!”

Citi Open Chairman and CEO of MDE Tennis Mark Ein: “We are thrilled to welcome Rafael Nadal, who is not just one of the greatest tennis players of all-time, but also a global sporting icon and inspiring role model to our Washington community this summer. I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate the joyous return of the things we cherish like live sports, coming together as a community and our historic event than having Rafa and the rest of our very deep and exciting player field competing for the Citi Open title.”

Rafa is the inspiration for Manchester City football star Mahrez

'When you win, you have to try to win again' - Man City star Mahrez reveals Nadal inspiration
The Algeria international says the record Grand Slam champion drives him in his mission to rack up the trophies
Riyad Mahrez has spoken out on how tennis star Rafael Nadal continues to inspire him as his role model to stay hungry, with the Manchester City man stating that it keeps him striving to surpass his old achievements.

The Algeria international has enjoyed a trophy-laden domestic career ever since he helped steer Leicester City to a shock Premier League triumph in 2016, winning further titles across multiple competitions since heading to the Etihad Stadium under Pep Guardiola.
Given that the winger has conquered virtually every domestic honour placed before him, he acknowledges that he draws upon his inspiration Nadal - the joint all-time leader in men's Grand Slam triumphs in tennis - to help keep him focused on always bettering himself.

"It's like Rafael Nadal," the 30-year-old told YouTube channel Oui Hustle in regards to driving himself on. "Once, he'd won 11 times at [home of the French Open] Roland Garros - and he was losing in the final of another tournament [in 2019].

"He said he heard a voice in his head saying "it's okay Rafa, you've already won 11". But no, he continues, even injured. He pushes and he wins.

"Those are the real champions. When you win, you have to win again or we'll say we're over. You have to surpass yourself all the time."

Octobrina, thanks for adding these new updates. It's good to have a constant flow of information and the knowledge that The King is returning soon to try and get a 5th US Open.

I honestly can't think of a better hardcourt tourney for him to return to for starting the Hardcourt swing. The field is very strong, and he has good recent memories from Canada. And he is giving people a chance in all North America to watch him play, rather than just U.S.

The opening of Rafa's (& his business partners') new Tatel Beverly Hills restaurant in Los Angeles is nearing.

EATER Los Angeles: "When it comes to pure star power it’s hard to outshine Spanish import Tatel, which is backed by Laker champion Pau Gasol, tennis star Rafael Nadal, and soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, among others. Nadal is a primary investor along with partners Manuel Campos Guallar and Abel Matutes Prats [the latter two are businessmen], who together make up Mabel Hospitality [a subsidiary of Mabel Capital, the investment company owned 33% by Rafa], the force behind Tatel. The restaurant has proven to be massively popular in its native Madrid thanks in part to its celebrity clientele, and for a time even did brisk business in Miami, Florida — and that’s to say nothing of their other location in Ibiza."

I went to Tatel in Madrid2 weeks ago and it was amazing, great food, service and the place was world class.

Trip down memory lane: locker room reaction on 16 yr old Rafa's 1st match
Bhupati, former Doubles #1: “When Rafa played his first big match in Monte Carlo at 16, I still remember the entire locker room was huddled around the TV to watch the new kid on the block. Carlos Moya who was in the top-five at the time proudly announced, “He is from my town.”
Rafa is probably the most humble and down-to-earth champion I have ever interacted with. The respect and courtesy he shows everyone off the court doesn’t reflect the warrior-like killer instinct he shows on it.

His mind-boggling record on clay might’ve earned him the nickname ‘king of clay’ but four US Open titles, two Wimbledon titles, one Aussie, five Davis Cup crowns, an Olympic Gold and a career-winning record against Roger of 24-16 will forever keep him in the debate.

Seeds (16 players) have a first-round bye. When Rafa gets a bye to the second round, he usually asks the organizers to schedule his 2nd round match for Wednesday.
I didn't find info about the players practice.

Rafa Nadal Foundation

Children supported by the Rafa Nadal Foundation Centre in Palma (the capital of Mallorca) visited Rafa's sports centre/academy in Manacor. They spent time at the museum, swam in the pool and played football:

The RNF Centre in Palma helps socially vulnerable children and youngsters living in disadvantaged areas of the capital. The centre provides support for families in three areas, which are vital for children's personal and social development: social education, education through sport and psychotherapy The centre serves more than 250 minors (between 6 and 17 years old) from socially disadvantaged backgrounds each year [Source: the Rafa Nadal Foundation website.]
Rafa's foundation has 2 centres that support socially vulnerable minors in Spain: in Palma and Valencia. They were opened in 2014 and 2019 respectively. The foundation is creating its 3rd centre - in Madrid.

The RN Foundation held its annual ceremony to award the "Study and Play" scholarships to 14 young Spanish athletes of different sport disciplines (tennis, football, baskeball, volleyball, fencing, athletics) to help them combine higher education with their sports careers. The scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to continue their studies and sports training at universities in the United States of America.

The virtual ceremony was hosted by the RNF's director Maria Francisca (Rafa's wife), Rafa and the director of I-Con Sport (a Spanish company dedicated to incorporating athletes to American universities) from the indoor tennis facility of Rafa's academy.

The "Study and Play" project was created in 2015 to provide financial assistance for young Spanish athletes who wish to combine higher education and high level sport at universities in the USA, but are unable to cover the full cost of higher education. To date, about 100 young athletes have received financial aid.

Rafa's yacht was named the best in the world in its class by Robb Report, an American luxury-lifestyle magazine.

Robb Report, June 22, 2021 (an excerpt):
¤¤ From a 462-Foot Gigayacht to Rafael Nadal’s Power Cat: The Best Luxury Vessels
Power Cat: "Great White"
Multihull builder Sunreef couldn’t have asked for a better spokesman than tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, who took delivery of his 80-foot cat, Great White, last summer. While the niche for large power cats tends to be filled with boxy, vanilla-white multihulls, Nadal’s new boat is one of Sunreef ’s most stylish ever.
With its azure-colored hull and custom features such as the foldout balcony in the main suite and sports-center televisions in the main salon, Great White is a showcase of contemporary yet understated styling. The salon’s open plan highlights the multi-hull’s main asset: significantly more interior space than a monohull of equal length. The area includes an eight-person dining table, oversize lounges and the large-screen TVs, a pair at 77 inches each. The main suite, located in the starboard hull, has a walk-in dressing room, sofa, queen bed and the foldout balcony. (There are three guest cabins plus two for crew.) The 80-footer has a pair of 1,200 hp engines, which deliver a cruising speed of 16 knots on the way to a top end of 23 knots. Berthed on Nadal’s home island of Mallorca, Great White cruised the other Balearic Islands last summer, and it’s anyone’s guess where the tennis star will end up this year as the Med reopens.¤¤
