Please go back to making simple looking shirts and shorts. A solid color polo without 14 goofy-looking panels. Just the simple 3 stripes on the sleeve look will do.

Thank you,

JB

We could say much the same fror all the apparel manufacturers, couldn't we? But they need to keep changing things so the more fashion-conscious of us will keep buying new stuff. There's not enough profit in it if people wear the clothes until they're worn out.

If you like the simple look, then look away from the big names to more generic clothing lines. If you demand the little logo patch and the three stripes, well then, they own you.

OMG, I couldn't agree more. I'm getting to the point when I see something I really like from Adidas, Nike, etc. I buy a few of them.

Agreed. I have bought a few shirts from their "Training" line. They are a polyester crew (I know you are looking for polos) with the three stripes down the sleeves...pretty basic looking.

Like minds, I did the same with adidas shorts a couple years ago. Should have done with shirts. Hopefully the basic look will re-emerge.

Cheers.

Unfortunately the 3 stripes all the way down the sleeve will never come back. Some genius lawyer at Adidas decided to trade mark the 3 stripes. The ITF and Grand Slams deemed it was a giant logo and said it was illegal.

I will try to find the link about how Adidas sued Wimbledon, the Grand Slams, and the ITF to try to keep the full length 3 stripe design.

Here is the link to the lawsuit. http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Ch/2006/1318.html

Here is a article about it.
Adidas Sues Wimbledon, Grand Slams

By KRYSTYNA RUDZKI

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Adidas is suing the four Grand Slam tournaments and the International Tennis Federation in a dispute over the size of its logo.
Wimbledon officials said Tuesday that Adidas filed papers in London's High Court last week seeking an injunction against a rule limiting the size of logos on players' clothing. Adidas also filed a claim for damages.

Wimbledon is the first Grand Slam event affected by the dispute, which began last May. Adidas is also suing the U.S., Australian and French Opens.

All England Club chief executive Ian Ritchie said Wimbledon would "vigorously defend" the case, which he described as "totally without foundation."

The Grand Slam Committee ruled last May that Adidas' three stripes were a "manufacturers' identification" and not a "design effect." Adidas was told its logos must be no larger than 4-square inches.

The rule goes into effect on June 26, the first day of play at Wimbledon.

The German sporting goods manufacturer said Tuesday the rule was issued "one-sidedly, without respecting the industry's needs and without considering concerns raised in advance."

The company said the rule "discriminates against Adidas and infringes elementary EU competition rights."

Adidas contended the three stripes running down shirt sleeves or shorts are not a standard logo. It said the official logo is the "performance logo" depicting three stripes arranged in a pyramid with Adidas written underneath.

"We do not want a situation where we see players covered in large numbers of manufacturers' identifications and have large crocodiles and large swooshes," Ritchie said. "If you accept the situation with the three stripes, then you open the floodgates to players being advertising billboards."

Ritchie said the Grand Slam committee had increased the size for logos from 2-square inches to 4, and given Adidas 13 months to comply with the new rule. He said Adidas' reaction was "heavy-handed."

"We think that's a perfectly reasonable compromise and they should comply with that," Ritchie said. "As far as I'm aware, the other manufacturers have said they are happy with the situation. We need to be equal to everybody."

This really sucks.

I agree.

The thing I don't understand is why was the 3 stripe design is now a logo? I remember a company called Todd 1 in the 80's that made clothing with the 3 stripe design along with other designs from other popular companies. Like the Borg pin stripe Fila.

Anyway here is a couple of photos when the 3 stripe was just a fashion design.

I'm okay with the stripes stopping part way up the sleeve. What I can't stand is all the other goofy things going on today with adidas shirts - two-tone colors, weird shapes and panels, other lines besides the 3-stripes, etc...

Todd 1...I haven't seen or heard that name in years. :) I remember their stuff, blatant knock-offs. And if I recall correctly, even their logo, a T1 design in a square, was a rip-off of the Fila logo. I don't know how they didn't get sued...unless they did and that is why they are no longer around.

Okay, I think I know what you mean...the different mesh areas are supposed to wick away sweat. The back panel on the white/orange shirt they are all wearing sort of looks like the back yoke of a western shirt...it is kinda funky looking.

Good memory Capt. Yes the T1 design was a rip-off of the Fila logo. I don't know why they went out of business other than I surmise that when Fila (the main target of their rip-off designs) started making their clothing in the Far East Asia in the 90's the price of the clothing came way down. Now Fila clothing cost the same as Nike or Adidas. The need for discount knock-off of Fila was gone because Todd One and Fila now cost about the same.

For those of you who don't know in the 1970's and 1980's Fila was a elitist high end Luxury brand of Tennis and Ski clothing. Everything was made in Italy and a shirt was about $70.00-$80.00.

Now that is what adidas clothing is suposed to look like. Thanks for posting the pics. Nastase was the man...and well dressed too. :)

Did you notice the original logo on the Nastase shirt? That is the Adidas Trefoil Logo. I think that is what should still be Adidas' logo not 3 stripes.

And if I may add, $70 back in the 70s was A LOT of money.

I found two Todd one jackets on that auction site. I tried to post pics of them but TW blocks any links to their site. Anyway, one looked like an old adidas jacket and the other I assume was based on a Fila jacket.

His shoes were the Adidas Rom...right?....I have bought three pairs like four years ago when they came out again. Amazing shoes. I still wear them today. well since 1970 at least.

Because Adidas registered them as such. It was Nike that instigated the legal action when they had their contract pros show up at the Italian Open 2 years ago with shirts that had huge 'swoosh' logos on the front and 'Nike' written in big letters on their backs. They were told their logos were too big and they counterd by saying the Adidas 'logos' were bigger. The legal action determined the 3 stripes were indeed a logo and thus broke the rules of not only the ITF but the Olympics as well.

For a time Adidas went away from the 3 stripes. When Lendl, Edberg, and Graf were their marquee players their clothes did not have the 3 stripes. I thought when Adidas returned to the 3 stripes designs that they had the coolest clothes. Since the law suit I haven't liked the designs of the Adidas clothes. Give me a plain white shirt with 3 stripes down the sleeves and shorts with 3 stripes down the sides any day.

I just assumed he wore his signature shoe, the Nastase Master. With customized soles for different surfaces of course.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the Rom an all purpose shoe...what we now call a cross training shoe? But he may have worn the Rom on certain surfaces, I don't know.

I remember Nastase having his own signature shoe as well. The closest shoe I could find is this Adidas Pro from Adidas.com in the originals section under tennis shoes.

Adidas Summer 07, This looks ok to me. I think you need to let the past go grandpa because the modern stuff is ok.

Damn TW blocking the competition again! Anyway, Nastase Masters are sold on Z A P P O S dot com if anyone wants to see them. They are in a few different colorways but the white w/ blue stripes would be the traditional type ones Nastase would have worn back in the day.
