It is impossible to cast a look around the horizon and not be impressed. From left to right, from the cliff rising out of the water to the installations of the Porto Cristo Club Naútica everything that provokes one's amazement, curiousity, envy, suspicion even, is associated with Rafael Nadal
The first thing that draws your attention - and it is impossible to miss - when you arrive at this Manacor fishing port, is his 5.5 million euro, 24 metre long 80 Sunreef Power catamaran moored at the dock. Its size eclipses all the other boats, no matter how powerful they are, and every time it weighs anchor and sets out to sea, tourists' cameras start flashing.
Right on the extreme left of the bay, the to and fro of an immense crane transporting huge blocks of stone can be observed. What will be Rafael Nadal and his wife Maria Perello's forever family home also has a location of privilege in Porto Cristo. Far from indiscreet flash bulbs, the main house and its ancillary buildings, bought by Nadal in 2013 for 4 million euros, are built on a 7000 square metre (1.7 acre) plot of land wih unsurpassable views. The mansion, inspired by local traditional architecture, has private access to the sea via a flight of stone steps - which has not escaped controversy as many local youngsters get to the water in summer by diving from them and this custom at times is an invasion of the owners' property and privacy.
The house has been undergoing a profound remodel for some time now. Various media sources reported some months ago that most of the original had been completely demolished and they were rebuilding from the bottom up but the truth is that the impressive villa still has its stone exterior in the Mallorcan style so typical of the area but its interior is now equipped with the most modern technology and is minimalistic in style.
While the construction work proceeds at a steady pace, the couple live in another of the many properties the Nadal clan have accumulated in the area. Both Rafael's uncles Miguel Ángel Nadal and Toni Nadal live in the area, as do his parents Sebastián Nadal and Ana Maria Parera. It should not be forgotten that, according to Forbes magazine, the fortune of the whole family taken together is around 275 million euros.
