aus open: who should host it if not Melbourne?

afl Grand Final is being held in Perth instead of MCG.

and it looks very unlikely that aus open will go ahead if the power mad dictator chairman dan stays on the current tangent he is on

so if Melb doesn't host it, who should?
Sydney?
Brisbane?
Somewhere like Singapore/Malaysia? Or Latin america?

thoughts?

if this is due to Covid-19, then ideally the alternative location must have done better than Oz to host the Oz Open.

maybe Canberra, so it is closer to NK.. :-D:love:

It's supposed to be the slam of the Pacific, so China would be the wise choice to make them feel special. They would reward Australia with lots of endorsement deals. Japan could use something to makeup for their unfortunate Olympics.

It has to be in the Southern Hemisphere otherwise it would be winter in unplayable conditions. I suggest South Africa or Brazil.

China has worse travel restrictions than Australia. And it will be cold.

Are there many places that can host 1000 tennis players and, at a minimum, 5 massive tournaments (men's singles, doubles, women's singles, doubles, mixed doubles, not even considering juniors and wheelchair) simultaneously?

Every chance it is cancelled as Australia looks close to turmoil with the violence going on that will get worse over the summer unless the Government relaxes restrictions.
Indian Wells would be perfect in March to host a Slam event.

A happy slam must be somewhere with atmosphere but since Australia is SO far away I'd take your propositions. I can't imagine no AO. Btw it was strange but this year even with no foreigners hard lockdown this slam felt so normal with maskless people. Strange!

No, hold it in Melbourne. Otherwise that gives an excuse to Federer fans to discount the slam if Djokovic or Nadal win it "well it wasn't the REAL australian open because it was different courts/different city, therefore it doesn't count".

The Australian Open has to be held in Australia, clearly, as it is the "property" of Tennis Australia. They could move it to Sydney if they wanted to spend one hundred million dollars plus. And after the 2032 Olympics Brisbane may be an option.

I've previously postulated that "the Alice" in "the Territory" should be a stopgap host of the tournament if it had to be relocated from the State of Victoria.

But now my heart's set on Cairns, QLD.

The Winter Olympics are to begin in China on 4th of February which would be facsinating to see tennis clash with the snow sports at the same time.

Guangzhou is usually comfortable, as it is subtropical, in January but a venue with GS calibre facilities would be a serious issue. But I think the local Canton powers would fix the ailing "Olympic Stadium" and its falling roof tops from the main courts within a couple months.
