So 2019, when he was destroyed by Djokovic, he wasn't carrying an injury?
He was unprepared. He actually said after his ankle surgery at the end of 2018 and recovering from his abdominal issues he didn't have time to practise his defence to play well against Djokovic who is known to be a defensive player.

Given how much injured Rafa has been he is lucky he never was injured during the clay swing.
He was injured in 2016 he pulled out of RG after the 2nd round with wrist injury. He was still recovering from his ankle surgery at the beginning of 2019 which is why he didn't do well in the clay season and this year he was suffering from foot injury which took its toll in the final.

Like the 2016 FO? You know, the one that Imhotep got

Ok ... at least you concede that 2015 beatdown was a bonafide one. Also, for someone accusing a poster, 5 posts ago, for letting Rafa live rent-free in his head, you seem to be no better with Novak. My post and this thread had nothing to do with Novak.

Which ones do you see him realistically winning if in form? ‘14 obviously he made the final but idk. Stan was killing it that day.

2010 is the only one where it really jumps off the page as a great opportunity

Rafa was out of form. it was well documented. But Djokovic was mauled by Stan in the final.

Rafael Nadal blames anxiety, lack of confidence for slump
Written By Gabrielle McMillen

Rafael Nadal admits he's dealing with anxiety and a lack of confidence following his latest stumble at the Miami Open.
The former world No. 1 player was eliminated Sunday in the third round by Fernando Verdasco.
'We're all accountable for our actions' - Raiders GM on Gruden

In a candid post-match news conference, Nadal opened up about his struggles in 2015.

"It's not the question of tennis," Nadal told reporters. "The thing is the question of being enough relaxed to play well on court.

“A month and a half ago I didn’t have the game. My game has improved but … I am still playing with too much nerves for a lot of moments, important moments, still a little anxious on those moments.”

The Spaniard insists his physical issues that plagued him last year are behind him.

"All these are small things that are difficult to explain. One of the tougher things has been fixed, that is the game, in my opinion," Nadal said. "Now I need to fix again the nerves, the self-control on court. That’s another issue.

“I am a little bit on and off too much. That is something that didn’t happen in the past. In the past I have been able to change a lot of situations, negative situations, in my career and I want to do it again. I am confident that I can do it. I don’t know if I am going to do it but I hope I can.”

So injuries, lacking of preparation, lack of confidence and anxiety.

He down 0-2 before he got injured in 2010. Biggest opportunity was definitely 2014, I also think 2006 he had an outside shot if he took part as Fed wasn't quite at his best.

2014 was some genuine witchcraft. Getting injured in the warmup before a final against a player you were 26-0 in sets against or something like that including several victories the previous season. Yes Nadal has missed around 15 grand slams due to injury but several more like AO 14 he played in but lost due to injury.

People don't like to talk about it because it makes Nadal look like the strongest player with 20 slams by far. The memeing of it is the ultimate failed defense mechanism. Just imagine how many slams Rafa would have if he played them as often as Djokovic or Federer through age 34/35. Even at just his average success rate we're talking at least 22/23.

You want to say that Rafa is such a mental midget that he couldn't get rid of anxiety at his pet slam which he had won 9 times earlier, ending up wining only 9 games.

I love the FO 2016 final and the way Wawrinka overpowered Novak in set 2, 3 and 4 .... One of my favorite Stan moment only slightly ahead of the mauling that he gave to Nadal en route his first grand slam. Pity he could never be consistent.

I don't think this post is helpful to Rafa. Injuries, whether chronic conditions or sudden ones - are a part of all sports. His resume, despite what he's overcome, is legendary. I won't award him extra based on hypotheticals (and I certainly, as some do, won't begrudge him of anything he has earned).

It's not a case of awarding hyphthetical victories just putting the whole picture into perspective.

I am hoping that Rafa will have recovered enough to play in AbuDhabi at the end of the year. I will be in Dubai then so I will definitely be there IF he decides to go then I will let you all know how he is doing.

My attitude is more or less: Who cares, it's part of the deal."
Guys like Delpo, Haas and many others would have felt blessed to have Rafa's overall health over the years.

In short, I don't really care about Roger's mono (or racquet size), Novak's gluten allergies or Rafa's chronic pain/injuries: it's simply part of the whole deal. Be justifiably proud (if that's the word) of what he has, and may still, accomplish. All of them for that matter.

That's all well and good but when Rafa is judged as being just a claycourter purely based on the numbers these things have to be pointed out.

To be perfectly honest this is a disgraceful list.

you have omitted all the slams from 1877-2005. Everyone knows Rafa would have won those Slams as well, likely in straights, if the universe hadn’t conspired against him to not allow him to be born yet.

So either injured or unprepared then. Unlucky.

I think it was pretty clearly explained he was UNPREPARED because he was either Injured or coming out of an injury.

You do this constantly. Either brush up on your reading comprehension skills or be more subtle playing dumb.
