What up with the OCD epidemic?

I'm just getting a chance to watch the Djokovic/Nadal Canadian semi. Between Nadal's butt-picking/sock pulling/hair tucking/water bottle arranging and Djokovic's incessant - and even worse, inconsistent - ball bouncing before serve - I feel like I'm watching a match between a couple of Ritalin addicts.

Good tennis, but these dudes need some therapy.

Yeah you can watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy while waiting for these two to serve.

Dude I have actually watched movies while watching both of these guys play. They seem to have quite a few marathon matches in the majors. Haven't watch LOTR though.

i'd call it a routine more than OCD... albeit a very long one. watching pierce fix her ponytail b4 every serve annoyed me more.

If I can be #2 in the world from picking my butt... I'm already on my way to the top.

Wow, I was blasted for calling it OCD in terms of Nadal...glad someone else saw this....shows my education did not go to waste...thanks!

Yeah, but routines are supposed to be consistant, which Djokovic's ball-bouncing isn't. . .Well actually I guess it's consistantly inconsistant. haha

i'd tend to argue that someone with OCD would 'obsessively' have to bounce the ball the same amount of times b4 each point. ppl with ocd need things to be the same everytime or have a pattern to it. ie only bouncing the ball an even amount of times.

Hewitt has been picking at the back of his pants to. So what.

And what kind of tennis fan would focus on a players' idiocyncrasies instead of on his game? (Rhetorical question, no discusion needed)

Ridiculous.

Oh I don't know - how many kids lifted their toes on serve during Sampras' heyday? Or ran around pumping fists or yelling "COME ON!!!" during Hewitt's?

Being a tennis fan is FAR MORE about absorbing the nuance of players' stylistic and idioSyncratic ticks than the boring reality of what makes their games so effective. What kind of tennis fan fails to notice that?

Still a reply is in order. :p

We as fans get annoyed waiting for these guys to go through all their "routines" or OCD issues. It slows down the game to the point of being a waste of time for all but the fanatics who support their player. Furthermore, if they are routines, why didn't a parent or coach get them out of the habit years ago:confused: Did they think they were so fragile mentally that any alteration in their quirks would unravel them? Nadal's mother should be aghast that he picks his butt in front of millions of people, so why didn't she tell him to stop?
As to Novak and his intermittent 20 ball bounces, the chair umpire should invoke the rules and put a stop to his nonsense. Between these two alone you have rules violations every single game. If I were playing against them I'd ask the chair do something or demand the tournament director have the chair enforce the rules.

The butt picking definitely has to go. However it would be funny to see a club level player start doing it during matches.

I guess that's the question I always have. Clearly time violations, etc. are taking place, fans can see, and I believe the umpires have stop watches or whatever and can time these things, yet nothing is done by them, or I should say little. I remind Lendl getting a few warnings of the sort....Question is why doesn't the other player say something about it? Between these two, granted, they're both doing so, so can't complain on the other. But just like with extra loud shrieking, why don't the other player say something?
