Thanks. That was pretty exciting tennis. The video is a good example of why few players serve and volley. Federer won the vast majority of points when Suzuki did S&V from that video. Of course highlights are selective though at one point it showed Suzuki only won 20 out of 39 points at the net.

Another good example was Mahut at Queens last year who lost to Roddick in the final after choking away match points. Of course that is grass though and faster than Wimbledon.

However there is very few players in the top 100 that I can think of that S&V a lot.

It's certainly an effective way to play at lower levels if you've got a good serve. I wish it were more popular on tour.

check out zverev. he plays only serve and volley as well! did it against robredo in the first round of austrlian open and lost in 5 sets, even tho he was up 2 sets to nothing!

Well,Llodra won two titles this year,Lopez got to the final of Dubai and Tsonga (who's not exactly a serve and volleyer but plays a lot at the net and has great touch there) got to the final of AO so I think netplay can still succeed even in today's slower condition tennis it's just that players today aren't taught that way and are much more comfortable at the baseline.

You just can't S&V exclusively anymore unless your serve is humongous.

no, unless your serve is good. that's why roddick was so bad at it; he had no time to get to the net, because his serve was already coming back before he reached the service line. people like sampras succeeded at it because their serve was so hard to return, with all the action on it, and also because he excelled at volleying at waist height on the service line. federer can do it because his serve ISNT that fast, but still has alot of action, and so he has time to get to the net.

I was referring to action on the ball mostly, not just speed. And Roddick just isn't a natural serve and volleyer. Sampras also excelled cause he was well into the court when he landed.

That's a good point. Sampras did get more rpms on his serve, and he got into the court quicker. But he was also so deadly accurate with both first and second serves that half the time he would be volleying a weak return floater. Roddick doesn't have as many rpms, he doesn't get in as quickly, and he's not as accurate. ARod could perhaps get in more on serves to the ad side - backhand. But the bomb serve followed by big forehand combo is more his speed. Sampras in his prime may not have been as fit as Roddick is now, but he was a better athlete and just plain faster, so his net coverage was better.

That was '05...what has happened to him? (no, not Federer)

I serve and volley :D

Always been a journeyman. Never been in the top 100, yet is now close to dropping to the 300's.

I remember this match. I found it very entertaining. At some point Roger hit a forehand around the net post. Incredible shot. Don't know if it was in that highlight reel.

"Federer has made a habit of neutralizing Andy Roddick’s 140-mph serve with his phenomenal returns. But against Sampras, Federer struggled to put the ball in play and many of his returns appeared uncharacteristically weak. Sampras’ ball somehow just looked different—it appeared much “heavier” than the top servers in the current pro game.
...
Research shows that Sampras was averaging over 2500 rpm of total spin on his first serve. That’s a phenomenal amount of rotation. It’s 50 percent more spin than many other servers with similar velocities. Just rev up the tachometer on your car to 2500 rpm if you want to feel how much force this involves."

I agree, definitely Rafterish :)

I was thinking the same thing and it was nice to see Suzuki smiling. It's a bit rare to see the players do that. For the S&V style of play, aside from having that natural instinct and feel at net as needed, in today's game that style of play is potentially more taxing physically and denting to the self confidence especially if you play against somebody who can return your serve well.

Nobody's saying that no one serves and volleys any more.

We're saying that nobody worth a crap serves and volleys any more. At the top levels of the game, it's simply a doomed strategy.

You'll still see S&V tennis. You'll just never see it again in a match that matters.

Roddick's serve has 3000 rpms, sometimes more. There's no way he can be 6'3 and hit a 130+ serves at 60-70% without putting a massive amount of spin on the ball. It's just not logical if you think about it.

I agree, I don't know about the comparison between Roddick's And Sampras's first serves.. but I would think Roddick would have way more spin on his second serve than Pete. Come on... Roddick serves second serves in the 120-130s ALL the time. Sampras second serves were much more commonly in the 110-120 range.

Roddick averages 105 mph on his second serve on a GOOD day. It's more like 98 mph on average.

130 mph second serves?? Pffft

He tends to go for less on the second, but when he feels pressured or he is on fire with the serve, his second serve averages in the 110s, sometimes hitting 120. He can bring the heat if he chooses.

Back in his old days his second serve average MPH was a little higher then it is now. Now, Roddick chooses to place better and with a little more spin.
