Federer - a "love/hate" thing...

Federer is really some kind of "love/hate thing" for me.

For one thing I really like to watch how great he plays, for another thing his success really makes tennis boring for me...

Some of you will probably say that he wasn't so successful this year, but let's be honest, a GS semi-final, three GS finals including one victory and an olympic gold medal is not exactly what you call a bad year. In fact it's something that most players dream of.

I would be happy if this endless victories of Federer - and Nadal lately - would finally stop. I want to see different faces in the finals, different winners, like the Australian Open this year but with Federer kicked out in rounds one to three.

I don't really care how many Grand Slams Federer will win in the future. Let him have 20 until he retires and it'll be fine with me. I just want to have some more variety. The way it is, I really can't stand watching any more Federer victories and it'll be the same with Nadal if he keeps on winning and winning.

I'm sure some will agree, others will disagree and some idiots will not read this and make a "what else to expect from a guy called Sampras" reply instead (Becker is my favourite player by the way, not Sampras). Just keep it nice and clean. This is just my opinion and you are free to post yours. I'd be happy to see that I'm not the only one who thinks that way ;)

I don't think the fact that Federer won the US Open made this year anymore boring. Sure, Fed and Nadal were far too dominant at wimbledon which made that tournament a bit dull, but the final was really exciting. Besides that we've seen different people this year in Australia and Murray in US Open finals.. Federer coming back to win the US Open is a story in itself, imo that's a story far from boring because he might have looked down and out to a lot of people earlier this year.

I like seeing Fed win when he plays like he did v Murray, with a varied game and more risk taking such as a lot of chip charge returns. Thats great, its a lot more entertaining. His old style of play with the overdependence on the big serve and sticking to the baseline was getting boring and it was also leading to more losses.

Though I love seeing Nadal thump fed, I get bored of Fed losing in a predictable way by trying to outbaseline the great baseliner.

Anyways this new style will be necessary if he wants to start beating Nadal, so looking forwads to seeing what he brings in the next matches they play and in years to come.

The reason nobody else posts is because they can spot a Pete Sampras troll from a mile away.

Have a good day. :?

Aha. Didn't I explain that I'm not a Sampras troll and didn't I say that I don't care about how many slams Fed will win. Does a username tell the opinion of a user? :-?

I hear you - same here.
On the other hand I'd rather watch Fed/Rafa/Joker if they are the best at the moment.

Who are you really fooling?

You are far from being a Nadal fan, but using him as a way to preserve to the so called legacy Sampras was suppose to leave for years to come.

I really don't get it.

Federer definitely had the "toughest" year of his career, everyone was predicting that other players would win the US Open, Nadal had the most incredible season so far, and Federer didn't have the Aura of invincibility anymore. Yet...you say you are "bored" when he wins?

Just another person that I say - why don't you watch the fricken WTA if you want "unpredictable", or shut the damm TV off.

i mean you must have hated the 90s at wimbledon when sampras just kept on winning and winning

at least now we have 2 worthy champions who win everything

djokovic and murray coming up

gasquet ready to destroy everyone (uhhh yeah...... one day for sure)

It's funny but that's what I did at the beginning of the third set when I knew Federer is going to win - I turned the tv off and went to bed.

I just want different winners and more competition. What's so hard to understand about that? If someone else comes up and dominates the way Federer did (and does) I'll say the same about him...

Indeed, I didn't like that at all. It was the same problem. I liked Sampras but I hated his dominace there...

You may be right, but at the same time I don't care. I was just answering your question. :?

The only thing your "answer" really says is that some people around here seem to be idiots if they think the username "Sampras" means that everything I post about Federer is some kind of troll post.

To the point.

Some people are just easily bored, I think.

In the past years it was like that for me too.I love Federer, his character, his tennis everything..but I get too bored and always tend to root against "favourites".This year was not this case though..and sure it wasn't that bad,but compared to Fed standards it was a decline!
I hope he gets his 14th next year, because imo he deserves to be the GOAT, and after that though I will still love him and appreciate him much,I won't root for him,at least so strongly anymore. But always will be deep down his fan.

I agree, I liked tennis a lot more 2004 and prior with different faces winning tournaments, now it is so boring.

I dont hate Federer. The continuous keyboard pounding of those saying its him and all others opinions dont matter are beyond long in the tooth.

Federer is phenomenal tennis player and history making in the process. That much cannot be debated.

I am not intrigued with Federer as some just based on the state of tennis.

Feds game is almost non human at times, good or bad, it can lean towards boring. Again only my opinion, not bashing. People like it when theres something on the line and battle ensues.

Tennis, while it will always be in proverbial state of trying to attract more mainstream viewers in order to make more money, is not in the state it was back in the 80's/90's.

In my humble opinion, tennis needs friendly yet astonishing rivalries to be succesful. Thats why Borg/McEnroe & Sampras/Agassi matchups were always a hit and drew fans and really made the tennis game what it is today.

Not the groundstrokes or the game play, the rivalry. The audience loves the Nadal/Fed matchup.

is what people call boring. Wow.

Those of you that are "bored" need to slit your wrists and bleed slowly to death.

A pretty ignorant statement, don't you think?

I've seen Federer's brilliance for years now. It amazes me every time.
The boring thing about it is that he is too successful. I want different faces in the finals, different winners. That's why it is boring, that's why Fed is a love/hate thing for me.

No offense, but this is between me and TheNatural and he knows exactly what I was saying.

Alright, in that case, sorry ;)

I never said that Fed vs Nadal was boring. I was making a statement that Feds game was boring. Possibly do the fact he is a classy player without any brashness. He wins, wins well most of the time. He does not in my opinion have any attitude however. Swagger or moxy, he just kinda plays along. Make sense? Its not a bash, just an observation.

The man can win, thats a well established fact.

You mean to say that your opinion is that the players you like have to be like Safin, Nadal or Hewitt? IMO Federer really has the most uhmm.. how do you say that, different? attitude from the rest of the players.. The 'say no word and just play focussed and keep your cheers till the end' attitude is someone few players really have without it getting to some 'not caring' state of mind. I think that's just class and very funny and amazing to watch as well.

Unlike Sampras for example, Federer rails on the court every now and then. He doesn't when everything works well, but who really does on a good day?!

Boring--he has a swagger but doesnt let the world see it..Just look at that overhead slice off of the smash--he put his hand up--you know hes in the zone--he just lets you know very rarely like that shot

i think most people who hate federer don't actually hate him, but instead they hate the fact he's so good at what he does. the other day i was reading an NFL forum and there was a thread there about tom brady and the thing is a lot of people hate tom brady for the very same reasons.

when people are really really good at what they do, and they rise so far beyond their peers, some people have an issue with that. i'm not saying that you're like this, but there are many people who act this way. frankly i hate these kinds of people because it's not a good reason to hate someone. how can you hate someone just because they're amazing at what they do?

which brings me to nadal fans. i think a lot of us really hate nadal fans at ttw. more than just sports, they represent the ugliness of society.

Not the groundstrokes or the game play, the rivalry. The audience loves the Nadal/Fed matchup.

The audience also loves an underdog as well...In the Gulbis match vs roddick Gulbis took a lot of roddick fans away on that night...we just need an underdog to come through

For me, i always envy the fighting spirit shows by no.2 to become no.1. So during the dominant era of federer, i like to watch nadal struggle to reach the top. It has nothing to do with the player itself..

I disagree about the Nadal fans. The bad thing are the "fanboys", not the fans. But fanboys are always bad no matter what. Nadal is a great player in every way. I'm glad that he's there...

I actually share the OP's view to some extent...I definitely used to think that way. Federer in every final, winning every slam (except the French:???:), almost every tournament even... He is amazing tennis, to be sure, but one hopes for a bit less predictable result, or there is less drama.

Actually, that is why Nadal has been so good for the sport. His style is very unlike Federer's, and he has been able to compete with him. Given his stellar year, I think that I have gotten my wish....the result is not (as) predictable anymore. Of course it is nice to see new players, new styles, etc., it keeps the game exciting (not that we lose appreciation for the current top players).

So I hope Federer and Nadal both compete at a high level for a while yet. It is an interesting rivalry, and more young players coming up will only make things more open, and make the Nadal-Federer matches more special. :)
