The yelling, the grunting, the sharapovas, and the nadals.

This grunting, yelling, whatever you call it technique helps you a lot.

Aggressive baseliners benefit from this because it helps develop your rythem, and rythem is essential for trying to consistently be aggressive.

It mentally helps you by giving you a fighting attitude.

And in some cases, you put yourself in a more dramatized environment.

For example: you think your in centre court wimbledon, and your actually playing in ghettoville.

This helps your focus.

Try it.
Placebo effect. =]

It may work until you meet a player who hits harder and grunts louder than you do.
Then maybe you won't like it so much anymore.

I think it has to do with the whole breathing thing. On TTC, one of the one minute clinics mentioned breathing out as you swing forward and make contact.

I think the grunting is a more "violent" way of doing that. however, the grunting could be detrimental and actually cause you to stiffen up.

Really the lesson here is that you should remember to breathe and exhale as you hit your shots. Grunting or yelling is really superfluous :/
