How long should a Syn Gut last me?

If I'm playing twice a week, moderate swing speed, lots of spin on my serve. I bought the Gamma X-2 last year and have pretty much used up all the strings that came with it. The Gamma string is all I've tried so far.

This winter I've only played a couple times each month. My racquet may sit for 2 months between stringing. I say this since if I string one racquet I'll play it until the string starts to move too often. The other racquet may not have seen daylight in quite a while.

Seems I'm spoiled with the stringer and "free" string so I find myself re-stringing about every third time I play. Am I shorting myself playing time with the string? Am I going too long? I usually "feel" the string differently after the third time using it.

I've only broke string 3 times in the last year so I'm not a huge hitter by all means.

Synthetic gut for me is play until it breaks. They hold tension better than polys, and is very easy to break. I break most synthetic gut strings in less than 6 hours play, but some people break them within an hour!

Yea, having your own stringer really makes a huge difference. I just got back into the game of tennis after ten years of nothing. Luckily, my friend loaned me his old 6-point stringer since he doesn't have time to play anymore. I guess it helps being a doctor, and not having an hour to waste on something that costs 15 bucks.

Anyhow, to address your concern, I've been using Prince Syn Gut Duraflex and it lasts me about 6 hours on the court. I hit pretty flat but I notice the mains start moving... then the tension drops... then it feels mushy. At that point, I say screw it and just restring. Syn Gut only costs $5 bucks and if you get a reel of it, it's even cheaper per job.

Twice a week is a decent amount of playing if you ask me. I'd say restring every three weeks.

Alright, so I'm not too far off. Twice a week is the norm in the spring, summer and fall but with winter here I'm happy getting out twice a month at lunch to hit some rallies, etc. I just noticed that the new strings move a lot more on the racquet compared to say the strings that the racquet came with. (In sig)

I played the strings that came on the racquet for maybe 16-18 hours before i decided to cut them out just to try to string for the first time. Now I get annoyed after the second time of using them because I'm consantly farking around with the strings.

String movement is trualy one of my greatest pet peeves. But with a bad wrist I need to stay away from the poly's out there, which I've read stay in place much better.

I personally don't like any strings that come pre-installed. I guess, unless you bought it and THEN they put the strings in. If you have a bad wrist, give Wilson NXT or Technifibre X1-Biphase a try. They're really soft playing strings and perform better than Syn Gut. I've only been experimenting with Syn Gut to see if I can justify the 3x higher cost of multifilaments. I get 6 hours out of Syn Gut. If I can get 12 hours out of multifilament, then I'll be satisfied because it plays and feels a lot better.

syn gut gets beter near the point where ist gonna break, dont restring till it breaks.

No, syn gut can die a lot earlier. I'm not a string breaker, over the summer I played a lot. My strings didn't break, but they looked damn ready to break. About 40 hours with them were played.

anytime i use a full bed of syn gut or a multi, the stuff is moving within 30 minutes and it just becomes irritating to fix. there's no way these strings are dead already, but they've definitely lost elasticity or whatever memory they had. btw i've heard you can avoid this by stringing the crosses tighter than the mains.

So if our strings shift too soon, should we increase tension?

I hit with a ton of spin and got probably 6 hours out of PSGD before breakage. During the winter outdoors in Central Florida, I was getting around 3 hours. So I'm now going with a Big Ace/PSGD hybrid in the mains and crosses.

A couple of points on string movement. If you string the PSGD really tight which is at the maximum of 65 on my racket, it does not move as much. If you use a poly/synthetic gut hybrid, poly does not move near as much.

I'm with the "synthetic gut will break before it wears out" group. With poly, I cut it out because it just dies after about 10-12 hours on the court. I have never had that problem with any of the synthetic guts I play, and it typically lasts the same 10-12 hours I get out of poly before it breaks.

Not if you're not a stringbreaker.

Synthetic gut can be usable until it breaks. The issue is performance. You will find your way if you keep rotating 2 or 3 racquets. String one every couple of days with same string and tension so you have racquets that have different hitting hours on them.

Compare the oldest to the fresh job. You will be surprised at the difference in power and control. Only you can tell if the difference is worth it to you. There is nothing like being in a hard close battle and being able to add a little extra to your game by being able to grab a fresh strung racquet.

Oh, I forgot to add that you may want to consider stringing at a bit lower tension so the fresh job does not require much break in. This will potentially further increase initial performance.

I`ve wasted too much mone on syn gut......so i decided to go wit a poly(tuff string) on the mains and a softer gut like string on the crosses. It lasts long n feels good...........syn gut breaks in about 8 hours of play for me............

That's a great idea. I'll definitely have to do that if I ever join league play.
