Who Thinks Tennis Warehouse should sponsor Clint Thomson?

Should TW Sponsor Clint Thomson? (aka Cl1ntrock)

All of us here at TTW are really enjoying Cl1nt's threads and posts. Who would support the idea of a TTW Sponsorship for Clint? Maybe he could get frames, strings, overgrips, bags, clothes and shoes simply at TW cost?

IF TW would be kind enough to sponsor him, who would be willing to contribute either a small amount of their resources or time, or perhaps provide housing here in the states (were he to come here to play) to help Cl1nt further pursue his career? (see Saram's posts in Cl1nt's thread, amongst others....there have been several great ideas posted already)

Cl1nt will soon have a website up and running (from what I understand) so please be sure to stay tuned here and check it out when available.

Craig--as I type this, the web designer is on his way over to work on Clint's website (web junkies always work at night for some reason so the coffee pot is just starting to brew here). So yes--his site is in the works and under way in a matter of an hour or so.

I want to support, sponsor and help Clint for two reasons:

1. I was a cyclist that was close to signing a professional contract--but lacked the funds to compete nationally. I was so close--and know the difference a few dollars and support can make for an aspiring professional.

2. Clint has inspired and touched a lot of us here. He came here, has hung around, and offered so much information, inspiration, and fun to a place that can sometimes be full of tension and angst.

Most of us come here to chat about tennis and never came to really know one another--or care about one another, for that matter. But Clint brought us together in a thread of his. We share ideas, we communicate on a personal level, we are kind and nice in the thread, don't bash anyone, and think outside the box.

Clint's thread, his personality, his sharing and devotion really have changed this place for the better. I'm glad I was here in the starting stages of it and will continue to check in on his thread every day--even if I never comment on any other threads.

Clint could enroll here?
http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=home

Or we could create something along the lines of Kiva for aspiring tennis pros? Surely some initial investment could help them get to more tournaments and they could pay back later when they are well off.

TW is fairly known. If we create a and manage it properly, just the reputational risk could minimize financial default.

Agreed, agreed, and agreed! ;) Be sure to cast your vote! :) Maybe Chris and the others at TW will see this one and pick up on it! :) CC

I have an idea--throw in an option when purchasing anything at TW to donate to the Clint Thomson sponsorship program. You could, at the end of your purchase, select the box to donate whatever amount you designated towards Clint's sponsorship from TW.

Just like you have the option when renewing your USTA membership--this could be an option when you check out.

That money, could go into a fund at TW for Clint. He could select and purchase what he needs from TW at whatever discount he and TW agree to.

Does this make any sense?

Forgive me for saying this, as I wish Clint the best of luck. But the above give the impression of selfless help for years rather than someone who's just been posting for a couple of weeks.

Doesn't it all sound a bit premature? You know little about him, what's his schedule, what will the money be spent on, how hard does he train, how dedicated is he, how many tournaments will he play.

Potential sponsors at the very least should surely expect some sort of sponsorship proposal from Clint, for example:

1) Full biography
2) Why the money would be useful
3) What he would offer in return
4) His tournament plan

etc, etc

You'd think organisations like TW would need something more convincing with the above as a start and even private individuals would be more inspired to part with their cash with some sort of statement of intent, or more detailed plan from him.

I have followed the other threads and that doesn't seem sufficient.

It's a great idea! Clint Thomson, the Tennis Warehouse Touring Pro! Surely some kind of arrangement could be set up to benefit all.

Sponsorship is a Business decision. So it is really not for us to decide.

However if you are implying us Forum members should support Clint, Absolutely. I will support Clint and every player who wants to play Tennis. Though not always in $, we are a global fraternity and most of us try our best to help a fellow tennis player (Pro or otherwise) in whatever way.

On a different note, Clint seems to have mentioned in another thread that he is doing reasonably well and able to pay his bills, travel and play tennis. So may be he doesnt really need us after all from a monetary standpoint. I am sure he can use our help in Website designs and other such things, where our expertise is on par if not better than comparable Industry standards.

This reminds me of an article in Tennis magazine. There is this guy who played Rafa in second round of Us open (Ryan deheart or something). Per that story, he is now working in a restaurant wrapping burritos for $8 an hour.

Sorry guys. All of you pro tennis wannabies. This guy is 25 years old and the highest he has gotten to is something like 485? I mean thats good but he is now down to what 700? Sure, he will kick around for a couple more years but he is not likely to get anywhere. Enjoy his posts. I would pay just to get the inside info. So, if he sets up some kind of a site, I would enjoy it and am prepared to pay for this info. There are many, many questions I would love to ask about the lives and activites of the pros, even the lower level ones like this guy. Anyway, good luck.

I understand your points and think they are valid. I think some of these issues have been at least 'touched on' in other threads, but I hope Clint will post a response for TW (and us, of course) to consider.

In all fairness, I would have to be honest and say yes, it might seem premature on my part to post this thread. BUT I think Clint's nature has come through in his posts in a way that is unusual on this forum. He's already spent a good deal of his time posting replies to all sorts of questions, and has been very kind and shown an easy-going, positive quality that makes me think he is a trustworthy guy.

As for "return on investment", I may only speak for myself, but I would expect nothing in return. I am not suggesting this is some kind of 'investment opportunity'. And I am not even talking about 'big' donations, just a little help here and there to encourage and support his efforts. Here is where the power of the sheer number of members of the TTW forum comes to bear. No one person need do a great deal. If a large number of us offered Clint a modicum of support, it might be the difference maker. If not, it certainly can't do anything but help your Karma! ;)

In the end, I would TOTALLY understand (and certainly NOT judge) if forum members don't want to do this. But if some do, I think it could be a pretty cool thing.

Finally, I want to be clear (before someone asks!) I am NOT 'advising you' to support Clint. I cannot be responsible if you feel you 'lose money/time/expertise/etc/etc/etc' trying to help Clint. Further, I do not have ANY kind of 'personal relationship' w/ Clint, nor do I stand to gain anything if he succeeds. Before a few weeks ago I'd never even HEARD of Clint. I don't know him in ANY way other than through his posts and videos here. I can't 'vouch' for him, other than offering my (subjective, personal) impressions of him. So proceed at your own peril.....or reward..... ;) Namely, the reward of the good feeling that comes from helping others.

Best,

CC

Great point. Sponsorship needs to be distinguished from 'support' of a group of fellow tennis players and tennis 'nuts' (the term is used as applied to self and with affection towards others!) ;) And you are right, from what I read, money doesn't seem to be the issue. Best, CC

No worries man. Glad to 'spell it out' for you.

There will always be 'nay-sayers'. These folks typically limit only themselves, so long as they are given only the attention they deserve. ;)

Meanwhile, best of luck in your efforts. We shall see what TW (and the members of this forum) have to say about all of this! :)

All of us here at TTW are really enjoying Cl1nt's threads and posts. Who would support the idea of a TTW Sponsorship for Clint? Maybe he could get frames, strings, overgrips, bags, clothes and shoes simply at TW cost?

Craig,

Why wouldn't all of that be better spent on an American player - male or female- who is just starting out on the pro tour. Or, spent on ensuring that a local college doesn't consider dropping tennis from its list of sports?

In my opinion, it most certainly would be. Why not get one of the recently graduated NCAA players who are now struggling away on tour (Lyndsay Nelson, Kaes Vant Hof, Kristi Miller, etc) or a young American player (Brengle, Weinhold, Stephans, Albanese, etc, etc), give them the same support in exchange for their insights?

As an Australian, I'm happy to see Clint do well. However, putting aside parochialism or personal interest , I think any offer of support from TW would be far better placed in the hands of a local player.

In all honesty, I've been enjoying Moz's thread for considerably longer and I don't recall anyone ever suggesting that TW should sponsor him. His (Moz) story is far more accessible to the average player and, in my opinion, far more inspiring. He mightn't be on the pro circuit but, to me, that doesn't matter. None of us will ever go pro but, with some luck, inspiration and courage we might follow Moz's footsteps. He's also a much better writer.

Again, good thoughts. I certainly understand and respect your points.

As for Clint in particular, I don't think this has to be an 'either or' kind of thing. Maybe you are opening the door for an even bigger idea? Namely a TTW consortium to support the development of tennis and tennis players, period?

See you guys got the ball rolling. Awesome!!I've been out of town, I accidentally voted for the wrong answer. For the record I'd be willing to contribute.

I would also like to add that the sponsorship of a fellow member would reflect positively on TW and create brand loyalty from us members

Craig, this post was a great idea, how did you ever think i such a thing:)

Yea I think TW needs to start getting into sponsoring anyway. They own the Donnay brand now right? They should get into sponsoring up and comers, or what i would call "underground tennis"

Again, not everyone agrees and that is certainly fine. Folks have different experiences, ideas, beliefs, etc. We need to keep the tone of respect Clint established in his own threads.

Well you should try to write german the way i write english and see how you go.I went to a german school so much for that.
I am putting out some info not trying 2 write a blog or story.

Moz was only trying to help. He's a cool guy who knows what it takes to compete at the higher levels of the game. Besides, he never said something like "this guy will never amount to anything". Nothing wrong with looking at things from a realistic standpoint.

More Fundraising Ideas

As clint has been around these boards a very long time, I think it would be an interesting idea for him to Blog for TW for a while - increasing his exposure and chance for everyone to get a bit more familiar with each other.

Another idea down the road could be a Clint drip-fund, basically the option at TW online order checkout to donate $ to Clint's cause.

And lastly, I thoink it could be an intersting option to do a TW/Clint Thomson Tennis Camp - a long weekend of evaluation, drills and lessons.
