Western grip, open stance-step into shot?

If you use a full western grip and an open stance, do you still step into the shot and hit off your front foot when you get the chance? I feel kind of awkward doing it but my coach tells me that I should. What is the general consensus on this?

Your weight should still be moving foreward IMO. Whether or not you step into the shot with your right (assuming your right handed) foot doesn't matter as much as making sure you have your weight going foreward. That being said, stepping in with your front foot does help you to uncoil and give you at least an even base so I would say your coach is right.

I like to think of weight transfer from right foot to left foot for a right hander. With open stances, it's a lateral weight transfer, not forwards towards your target. But it is a weight transfer from hitting side (right) to left side of your body.

Beware that coaches are human and can hurt your game as much as they can help it.

Sometimes things that are valuable, feel terrible at first until you understand it and have worked with it.

Give it a chance, but do not be afraid to experiment and discover for yourself what works.

The Soderling FH is quite unique. Not sure he uses Full Western though.
