I saw it about a month ago, thought it was brilliantlly done, has much to say about regret and the hazards of living in the past, cinematography was beautiful. My wife and I were still talking about aspects of it a week later.

Saw one of the other nominees, Ajami, a few weeks earlier. Had more of a documentary feel about Palestinians and Jews coexisting and interacting in Israel, a bit of a Capulets and Montagues story, felt very real but not very memorable.

Thanks, ollinger ... yes, it was a very good movie ... I was surpised by the ending ... usually, I am able to "predict" the end of a movie given the numerous clues throughout ... wasn't able to do it this time ... if anyone plans on seeing the movie, and I do encourage you to view it ... CAUTION: there is male and female frontal nudity in the movie.

Yes, there's a some nudity....but not nearly enough. The ending was not something I imagine most people could predict....my wife feels the ending was his fantasy, I'm not convinced.

Hey sweet Tina ... let me guess ... was it called "Mother" ... I bet there were a lot of tears in the movie ... most Korean flicks are heavy on the drama, pain, and suffering ... not really noted for making light or romantic comedies, no?

Tina ... before I forget ... check out the thread from CanadianChic ... I had a question on one of the last posts for you ... thanks!

That's interesting ... he was a crack investigator and he put some of the pieces together which compelled him to return to Morales' home ... I don't think it was his fantasy ... however, my wife and I thought the final resolution with Irene ... was his fantasy ... as you recollect, he also fantasized/exagerrated that one departure scene at the training terminal (... it occurred only in his mind as intimated by Irene after she reviewed his draft)... see what your wife says about that.

"Untold Scandal" (2003) is an adaptation of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" set during the Chosun dynasty. It's a rather convincing adaptation but one who has seen Stephen Frear's "Dangerous Liaisons" (or read the novel) should not expect major departures in the plot, except for small adjustments made to reflect 18th century Korean society. It's a rather lavish production with stunning aesthetics, which did extremely well at the Korean box office for a film of this type.

FYI, the Korean film industry produces as many light and/or romantic comedies as Hollywood does. :)

Hey Bob ... well, you clearly know your Korean cinema ... and ... I stand corrected! Was wondering if you've seen that Korean movie: "Mother" ... if, yes, how did you like the movie?

Hello Davis,

"Mother" is a very good film and Bong Joon-ho is one of the best contemporary Korean directors along with Park Chan-wook. His style is a tad operatic but despites the excesses, he tends to build his stories around ordinary people and often inserts small jokes at the expense of movie cliches. The acting in "Mother" is excellent and the symbiotic relationship between mother and son flirts with the melodramatic without the characters appearing monstrous. A clever and gritty thriller.

Another one of his films, "Memories of Murder" (2003) is one of my favorite Korean films.

Hello Tina,

Difficult to make suggestions without knowing your tastes in films but regardless:

If you like romantic comedies I suggest: "My Sassy Girl", "Windstruck" and "The Classic". "My Wife is a Gangster" and "Marrying the Mafia" are also pretty funny, as is the horror comedy "The Quiet Family".

My favorites:

Park's vengeance trilogy: "Sympathy for Mr Vengeance", "OldBoy", "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance".

The more recent "Thirst", also from Park, who turns the vampire genre on it's head.

The above mentionned "Memories of Murder". And also from Bong Joon-ho, the monster movie "The Host", another genre bender.

"Tell Me Something", another excellent thriller.

The wacky "Save the Green Planet" about a very odd young fellow who believes that the CEO of a big corporation is an alien and kidnaps him.

The excellent horror film "A Tale of Two Sisters" (remade in the US as "The Uninvited" I believe).

The sarcastic political thriller "The President's Last Bang"

The biopic "Fighter in the Wind", about martial arts legend Choi Baedal.

"Musa the Warrior" and "Bichunmoo", the sweeping epic swords/martial arts blockbusters.

Then for the more arthouse inclined there are:

Kim Ki-duk, "The Isle", "Spring, Summer, Fall,...", "3-Iron"

Lee Chang-dong: "Peppermint Candy", "Oasis"

Hong Sang-soo: "The Power of Kangwon Province", "The Turning Gate", "Woman is the Future of Man"

I could go on and on but I don't want to bore everybody to death. :)

By all means keep the names coming so I will research and watch them.......I have watched a lot of what you mentioned. Oldboy of course is one of my favorites of all time. Shiri was good, so was DMZ. There was also a war movie I saw I remember liking it a lot, Tae Guk Gi or something like that. Of course , I also enjoyed watching The Host.

Any particular genre?

Yup, Tae Guk Gi was pretty good. You might want to check out "Silmido", based on true story of 31 death row prisoners, selected in 1968 by the South Korean military, for a mission to assassinate the North's president. A tad melodramatic, but still entertaining.

If you liked DMZ, have you seen JSA (Joint Security Area)? One of Park's earlier films about tensions in the DMZ.
