Anyone know what Todd Martin is up to now?

I read once he thought about maybe becoming a teacher after he retired from tennis. Too bad he never won one of the big ones; a class act.

He's coaching Mardy Fish, part-time. Scott Humphries travels with Mardy when Todd does not.

My guess is He wants to be the next USA Davis Cup captain.

I enjoy integrity as much as the next person, but I don't know why people rave about Todd so much. To me, he's just boring. When he visits the broadcast boost, he's boring. On the court, he's boring. His dreams are probably boring (Todd shopping for screws at Home Depot... and he's not even naked.). I really don't get it.

I also think Pat Mac is lame as hail.

Todd Martin. Such a boring guy. Never read about him snorting cocaine, breaking the law or getting caught with a prostitute. Might even point him out to my son as one whose lifestyle one should emulate. But NO he is boring. As opposed to Roscoe Tanner for whom the answer to the question "What is he doing now?" always seems to be "Time in the pen." Give me the boring anytime.

isnt he the only guy on tour with a college degree?

It's not an either or proposition. And, yes, sometimes safe is boring, and vice versa. Anyway, it's a sad commentary on our society when somebody's being praised for not being a jackarse. Sort of reminds me of Chris Rock's bit about guys bragging about not going to jail, and taking care of their kids. Low expectations.

edit: Also, different strokes for different folks, because I wouldn't want my son to be like Todd Martin. I want my future kid to be a nice, caring human being, and it would be great if he/she's half the player Todd was, but I hope he's more interesting than Todd.

35, martin was one of the nicest guys on the tour. he took over the annual sportsmanship award when edberg retired. just because he doesnt make an ass out of himself in public doesnt mean he isnt interesting.

Actually he left Northwestern after his sophmore year. So unless he went back to finish his degree I don't think he has one.

BTW there are lots of players who went through 4 years of college and a got a degree and are on the tour. You just have never heard of them because they are usually ranked 200-1400.

In my opinion he is. 99% of pro athletes are cliche' generating machines. He sort of falls into that category. Todd Martin speaks like a politician. I find people like Safin, Goran, Nastase, and Johnny Mac way more interesting. If I want a roommate, Todd Martin would be good. I want to hear something interesting and provocative, Todd's not the guy.

As a big Todd Martin fan I must say...funny is funny and you is funny. Your concept of him dreaming of shopping for screws at Home Depot (and not even naked) is a hoot and I wouldn't be surprised if he would get a laugh out of reading that...I certainly did.

I agree with some of the others in this thread that Todd Martin was boring. I don't really care about his off court personality. What always bothered me was his on court demeaner and style. There were so many matches that he just couldn't close out. It just seemed that the longer the rally went the less chance he had to win it. He was a lot like lindsay the lumberer as I call her but she has the talent that helped her to olympic gold and some grand slam titles. Todd was always boring and never a threat to win anything grand. In general, he seemed mild mannered but there was one match I watched, perhaps at the US Open but I don't remember anymore, in which he acted like a lunatic. His eyes were bulging, nostrils flaring, face reddening, fist clenched- not classy at all. He looked like a dragon or enraged druggie and I thought of a term I had learned years ago-testosterone poisoning. My memories of Todd Martin are of someone I dredded having to watch until coverage flipped to a better match; someone who just was downright unimpressive on the court and of course, that disturbing image of him looking totally psychotic I will never forget. I realize that I never met him and do not know him. He might be a really nice man. I don't know. I cannot tell you all how many times I would put on the tv and see him and say "I cannot wait until Todd Martin retires" that and "I cannot believe he is one year younger than me and looks like he could be my father" and that wasn't just because of his gray hair.

He stopped coaching Djoko like 6 months ago I think. Djokovic is back with that Marjan Vadja guy or whoever he is

The last I knew Todd was trying hard to develop his out reach programs. He was here at the Nats tournament in August for that. Every time I've seen Todd he's always come across as an everyday family man/father. I've always gotten the sense that he sees celebrity status as a way to give back as opposed to being a celebrity and the ensuing stereotypical stereotype D). Todd Martin only comes across as being "boring" in the sense that most family guys are boring; your dad or uncle so to speak. All that really means is that you're not privy to his inner circle.
