He's on site in Barcelona this week.

An informed source told me that Murray is to be paid 200,000 Euros in an appearance fee to play the tournament.

I guess Verdasco wasn't offered a comparable amount, so he passed :)

I just didn't know the going rate in such tourneys.

Still don't know if Murray decided to play here or not.

Fed's and Ralph's must be in the millions then...

Sounds somewhat similar to the money Djokovic got for putting in a desultory performance in Brisbane.

I don't think Murray would have gone to Barcelona with an injury without such a contractual obligation.

Yes, he should have waited, but still if he won last year he might have had reason to complain if his fee was considerably lower than some others.

Are you being serious!?:shock::shock:

According to Wikipedia, the winner gets 73.300€.
He would have therefore gotten more than 10 times the highest prize money for simply showing up...

Yes, i'm being serious. And this is not the biggest check under these circunstances, i remember Nadal beign paid almost the double of Fed @ Estoril in Vietnam i think.

A million dollar/euro appearance fee?? That's just criminal. And Federer played one of his worst matches ever in losing to Montanes that year...

Seems hypocritical to me. I hear the top guys talking all the time about how they should be allowed to play whatever tournaments they want, instead of cutting tournaments from the calendar, so that the 'lower ranked guys' can participate in the smaller events to make their ends meet or gather ranking points. And then they go and stuff their purses with these deals...

To be fair-ish to the great players, if they turn up they generate media interest in the tournament so the fee is commercial.

Where do they get this money? I know where Dubai gets their appearance money, but some of these tournaments, with all those empty seats... are the sponsors giving them THAT much?

Exactly. Lucked out that someone whose claycourt resume is nothing to write home about, has never beaten Nadal on the surface, and has had an abysmal run of late, was not at his best to rout him

Next.

Yup. Murray was definitely in the doldrums and STILL manage to take an easy set off Nadal who was playing much better than Murray. Djoker surely would have crushed Nadal.

The top players are all pathetically overpaid, just some more than others.

I totally disagree. The top players are the face of tennis currently and the players people want to see when they buy tickets. They drive the tennis business. Both the tournament directors and the players know this. Tennis players have a short shelf life, so I say strike while the iron is hot.

That is capitalism my friend. That is the way it works. The best players who are the face of the game are paid the most. They are in demand and they know it. Why the heck shouldn't they go and stuff their purses as you say with these deals? They would be stupid not to IMO.

Is this news? Roddick pulls about $500,000 for the tournaments he plays in the US (San Jose, Washington, etc). Verdasco probably got $100,000 or more to play San Jose and Memphis. Most of the top 20 get paid fees to play the optional events. Some players up to the Top 50 can usually get a few dollars in fees from tournaments. Depends on the tournament, the country, the player.
