Andy Roddick: Surivial of the Fittest

I really hope he plays aggressive, I only saw a couple of games from his match against Murray, and Murray was playing really amazing, but Roddick was just giving him puffball approach shots and he was was getting passed and passed, just the same story for the post-05 Roddick.

His 'huge' 1st serve was at 83% and Murray dismantled him. Not nearly as huge as it once was. The spirit is certainly there.

A good thing to remember though is that that was a 3 set not a 5 set match, and that was not the SF of Wimbeldon, which is where Murray and Roddick would face at W19....and where they did face in 09' when Andy beat Murray in 4.....

Roddick certainly needs to play WAY more aggressively then he did in that match, and to be honest he had been playing more aggressively since the Aussie Open, but reverted back in that match.

If AR plays 30% more aggressively, and Murray plays more defensively(which he's prone to do in big slam matches) then along with Roddick's determination and experience could give Murray a match.

I just hope Andy can get to the QF/SF and give himself a chance...

So do I.

A couple of points mate, if you don't mind. Wimbledon is in SW19 - W19 is West Ealing - quite far from Wimbledon; you wouldn't want to walk it. Also, ARod could meet Murray in the QFs - it doesn't have to be a semi.

Oh, haha opps...what does SW19 stand for? I just see everyone writing it out...sorry from Canada...I didn't really know.

Also, your right Roddick could meet Andy in the QF...

Roddick will have to face one of the Top 4 in the QF's?? Or are we not sure yet?

Yes - Arod will be drawn to face a top 4 seed in the QFs.

South West 19 is a post code mate. See below.

BTW I got it wrong above when I said W19 was West Ealing - it's W13; there is no W19 (before a Londoner comes on and corrects me :) )

I just don't see it happening. I hope I'm wrong...it'd be nice for him to get the grass chip in his twilight after falling short so many times....

But...

He is still hitting powderpuff groundstrokes and won't get past the best players in the world in consecutive matches with his serve alone....

I recently watched his match with El Ayanoui on ESPN Classic and was amazed at how intense (in a positive, fired up way; not bitter, ******y, yell at the ball kids and umps way) and exciting player he was.

He may have improved overall aspects of his game but his poor attitude and "percentage pusher play" seem too big a hindrance on the big stage.

@Qubax - you said you're Canadian mate - what's the story with the hockey riot? I didn't think you did crowd trouble in American sports.

"percentage pusher play".

Why do people call out pro's for being pushers? Pushers rarely make it past club level let alone on tour. Basically Roddick needs to go all guns blazing on the serve the forehand and he gets ample chances at a second slam. If he plays defensively then he won't even make another QF. He's in a similar position to Murray except Murray playing defensive still plays a lot more offensive than Roddick does playing defensive and puts away short balls.

Qubax: His forehand has actually mechanically changed. His takeback used to be a lot higher and his overall FH motion was a lot more explosive and he could generate a huge amount of pace. Nowadays he puts puts less effort in and brushes up on the ball. Thus creating much spin. That and not using the Standard Pure Drive model which is a more powerful racket.

"People expect me to throw a pity party because I've played [in the Federer-Nadal era]. I won't complain about it."

"I haven't been too proud to adapt... You can't really have two shots and get away with it."

"I don't think I'm naturally as talented as a lot of guys, but I'm willing to work."

Roddick may not get his fairytale ending at Wimbledon. Whatever happens, though, nothing can dampen his competitive edge or love for the game. "He just views [setbacks] as a challenge and seems to find a new source of motivation and just works even harder," states Gimelstob.

"What else am I going to do?" says Roddick. "I know a handful of people who really enjoy what they do and I really enjoy what I do. So there's really no reason not to keep driving on."

Yes, I can definitely see why some people think he's such an arrogant, spoiled, frat-boy jerk.

Wimbledon title or not, I will always be a fan of him. Vamos Andy! :D

That is his pseudo humble talk. He takes out his anger on lesser people when he is losing.

@Qubax - you said you're Canadian mate - what's the story with the hockey riot? I didn't think you did crowd trouble in American sports.

I'm from Calgary, a little east of Vancouver which is where the riots were....

Calgary fans and Vancouver fans have a HUGE rivalry, so for one thing I am happy Boston won the Cup!

As for the riots, we Canadian hockey fans are intense....we are like soccer fans, kind of.

Anyway, the Vancouver fans had a lot of alcohol, and pent up frustration with the loss and just went bananas.

There were 140,000+ people in down town Vancouver.....atleast half of which were three sheets to the wind and angry...

There was a smaller riot in 1994 in Vancouver when they lost the Cup Final to the NYR....everyone was hoping the Police would learn from that year and be more prepared....but didn't really turn out that way.

Well it's just so freaking frustrating his loopy, slow forehand...I mean he looks like he couldn't hit a 1975 Chris Evert off the court and she was a defensive, borderline pushing, mooner baller(no offense as I am a huge Evert fan, but with the raquet technology and her 'game' - that's kinda how she played, effective as it was at the time)

Anyway, I mean I am glad that Andy lost the weight, that he has gained experience, and is still motivated, and a fighter....

additionally I think Andy has improved his serving overall...especially his 2nd serve.....his variety, etc.

But honestly if he would just hit with more pace he'd be golden.

Flatten that sucker out and go for it!

Drives me nuts.

that seems really far from being an actual word

but yah Andy has good survival skills....well good survival fight anyway....

Goldfine I believe was the person who made Roddick change his FH motion. Sometimes he switches back to hit a huge forehand every month. It wouldn't be so bad if the guy didn't pronate too much and he could actually get a good amount of pace with spin but like you said he just rolls over his FH. Roddick's forehand wasn't actually flat, it had loads of spin on hit. He just had immense power on that stroke and still does.

I don't think Roddick has improved his 2nd serve. He's improved his first serve but this year his serve has been ok but he used to go for it a lot more in 2001-04. His 2nd delivery is a bit too predictable.

Jimmy Connors says that for Roddick to win another Slam, "he's going to have to come up with something spectacular, and I don't know if he can do that now. The other guys have kind of gotten on to him a bit. The big serve seems to be coming back a lot more, and the guys are getting the ball in play. They've figured out a way. Because all the guys have big serves now, and some of them are even bigger than his."

I remember when he first came onto tour, everyone was saying he was going to have major shoulder problems serving like that, which hasn't been a case.

It will be really nice to see him win Wimbledon, almost the way Goran finally won it. It will be hard, but I don't think it's totally impossible b/c he still has the serve, and somewhat bully his way through.

Who's everyone? Roddick's serve was perfect in terms of kinetics as is most players on tour. Even players who have an out of sync kinetic chain on their serve don't get injured; Roddick get his power from the ground upwards; he ust gets there differently due to an abbrieviated motion, that's all.

And I think if Roddick used the old FH that Comet Buster was talking about then it wouldn't take "something spectacular" for him to win W19....

I mean hey he got there against Fed in 2009 and that was recent enough that his FH was still powder-puffy.....

If Roddick used the old FH + his fitness, experience, some limited but well timed guile, serve, etc....he'd be the most likely guy to win it outside of Fed and Nadal.....(and even then)

but as is Roddick is somewhere below:

T1 - Nadal
T1 - Fed
3 - Djokovic
4 - Murray

5,6,7 Del Po, Sod, Berdych

8 - Roddick

That is his pseudo humble talk. He takes out his anger on lesser people when he is losing.

remember roddick's desperate need to be ON TV?
example: fake display of confidence when ferrer hit the shot on the line in the davis cup match? while roddick looked cross-eyed and confused.
he's too stupid to know that we realized that he'd do anything for praise AND money.
he sure goes to a lot of charity money begging radio shows and sporting events when he cries about his 'injuries'.

we know he hated staying thin, practicing and learning from real coaches. he avoided clay like it's a plague then he pretended that he suddenly got injured after 10 years.
he already whined this week about the fantasy of his great fitness which became bad health this year, like he is so unlucky and just lacks talent...
no lazy, spoiled, lying, idiotic, destructive fun loving, arrogant, greedy pig...oh no. what a tool.

jimmy connors knew this years ago, even though he wasn't a good coach to roddick. he called roddick an old dog that couldn't learn.
