WeissCannon B5E vs Pacific Tough Gut

That title probably made you say, WTF? But, hear me out.

I am a string breaker. Hit hard with lots of spin.

I want the following out of my string job.

1) Control - Most important
2) Durability (including tension maintenance)
3) Arm Friendly

What option would be better B5E at 42 lbs or Tough Gut at 62 lbs?

In another thread someone said I would get 30hours out of Tough Gut. Is that true?

If you are a stringbreaker with heavy spin, you won't get 30 hours on full TG. It's durable for a gut, but I think the 30hour comment was for those who hit flatter balls.

Honestly, the best way to get your 1, 2, 3 is to hybrid, poly mains and toughgut crosses. I bet B5E/Toughgut would be a killer way to go, string mid to low 50s.

I had this same question this week. Coincidence indeed.

Better than B5E mains, Mantis Comfort Synthetic crosses? Why?

Because it's gut.

Also, depends on the racquet. Strings that last me 20+ hours in a closed string pattern racquet I break in 5 hours in an open-string pattern racquet. If you have an open string pattern, I'd go poly/multi or full multi, because you'll break the mains way before the gut goes.

If you are looking for tension maintenance, you can pretty much rule out any poly.
Poly/Gut is a waste of money IMO.
While it is possible to replace the crosses on a Gut/Poly, you cannot replace the mains on a Poly/ Gut when they go dead.
So why not go with the cheaper multi?
Most of the performance comes from the mains anyway.

Yes,gut is gut. But, for a poly that will go dead in 6 to 10 hours, gut as a cross becomes pretty expensive. Also, gut is very sensitive to climate conditions.

Its kind of tricky ehis thing. Poly mains wont break but will die maybe at the 6 to 10 hour mark.. PTG mains will probably last 15 hours if one is a stringbreaker I suppose. So isnt PTG mains a better idea?

The B5E edges will fray the TG even quicker than a round poly will. DO NOT USE A SHAPED POLY IN A HYBRID UNLESS HYBRIDDING WITH A DIFFERENT POLY.

B5E at low tension would be the way to go as long as you use a constant pull machine (as opposed to crank). This is because the crank mechanism "locks out" at the reference tension but the string will continue to stretch and end up at an even lower tension. I've been using B5E at 50. I'm switching to SilverString at 50 because I find B5E a little "grabby." Also I add 5 pounds to the two middle strings and two outer strings. The extra tension quickly "migrates" and helps prevent a hot spot and compensates for tension loss. It's the way to go these days!

the multi I used seemed to have WAY too much power and broke in about 5-6 hours. it was technifibre x one biphase

i really need a nice control string and from what I have read gut or poly would be better than any multi?

B5E is not very pronounced so it does not cut into strings as much as other shaped polys. As for stringing it with a crank, poly does not stretch very much especially at low tensions so the difference between a constant pull and crank in this situation is minor.

Try Mantis Comfort Synthetic or Head RIP Control, both are lower powered multis.
