Even if Djoker has an avg 2012, it doesn't necessarily mean he won't dominate

After Djoker's late 2007, early 2008 run up, very few people predicted that he'd be slamless till 2011. Then he blew away 2011. He could very well cool down in 2012 and so then have a standout 2013 or 2014.

My point is that once you have proven:

1) The weapons to hang and beat the top guys
2) The mentality/self belief to hang and beat the top guys

then you should always be a threat until you significantly decline physically. There is a saying in cricket "Form is temporary, class is permanent".

Also this is also not the first year he has overplayed and been tired by the end of the season. So I'm inclined to think that what he does in 2012 is not necessarily an indication of the future. Of course to be fair it also depends on the form factor of Fed/Rafa/Murray do. Outside of these 3, I don't foresee a newcomer or someone like Tsonga coming in and being top gun.

If Djokovic doesn't win at least 4 slams in the next 4 years it will be because

a) Fed reverses aging and has some crazy renewed desire to win slams
b) Nadal tweaks his game to improve BH and serve
c) Murray finally discovers self belief in slams.

The early part of the year will be key: if he wins his fair share (doesn't have to win everything) then he'll be ok. But if he only wins 1 or 2 tournaments before the spring clay season starts then it will make last year look like a 1 time event and not a sign of him dominating for multiple years. And of course, is his shoulder problem completely resolved?

IMO 2 slams will be a lot for him and I doubt that will happen. I don't know if it depends on Djok, but more on the likes of Nadal Tsonga and the other lower ranked guys in the top 20.

So who exactly is going to take him out in slams? NADAL:)? haha

It could any of the folks that he lost to post USO or any of the top folks, or it could be any up and comers. I think it's naive to think that Djokovic is unbeatable after his post USO matches......

Djokovic has lost just as many matches as Nadal after the US Open (if not less, I'm not sure). Are Nishikori, Tipsarevic or Ferrer really going to trouble a fit Djokovic? The answer is not in a million years.

I think it's naive to believe that any of the top 4 are unbeatable on any given day. Rafa had chances to win against Novak and Fed nearly did at USO.

There are dynamics in the sport of professional tennis other than the scoreline of past matches.

Ferrer can, and has before.

Djokovic doesn't need to dominate to even remain No. 1. If he can make a good showing in Australia (SF or better), make some quarters, semis, and finals, or wins between AO and RG, he could remain No. 1 past Wimbledon.

A lot of it depends on the other players also. For Nadal to repeat all the hard court finals he made this year, it would take an incredible effort. It's difficult to gauge Roger's form and how winning the WTF will affect him going into next year. Murray definitely has room to improve after Australia.

Federer's 2009 and Nadal's 2010 were hardly domination. Federer won, I believe 4 titles in 2009. 2 slams and 2 Masters. Nadal in 2010 won 3 slams, the clay season, and almost nothing else. Yet, they both ended those two years ranked No. 1.

Djokovic does not need to repeat 2011 to remain No. 1 in 2012.

Who is Djokovic's big competition? Nadal? Can Nadal convert back to his 2010 form and soundly beat Djokovic consistently again? Federer? He is 30 years old, is he really going to dominate again? Hopefully Federer can win one more slam and if he does that will be exceptional. Tsonga and others winning a slam? I highly doubt it. Eventually a young gun will come around and challenge Djokovic, but for now if he is playing even remotely well he should be able to stay at number 1 for the next year or two. He does not have to do anything near his 2011 year to accomplish this. To me two slams do not seem improbable for Djokovic in 2012 unless he has injuries or some kind of real fall from his 2011 form. To me it looks like Djokovic's time. I don't think he will be a Nadal or Federer in terms of greatness but I think he can win a few more slams for sure.

I think Nadal is gonna surprise a few people next year, myself included.

People thought after his 1.5 month break after Japan that he'd surprise everybody coming into the WTF. So what happened there? And now approaching 26, it's not going to get easier.

CM Punk V Jericho - It will happen in Miami....

I personally think that next year, Fedal will step it up. I don't think Novak will outright dominate like he has this past year, I think he will be pulled back a notch. However, that does not mean he won't win slams, or extend his reign at the top, but I do feel Fedal and co. will be looking to hurt him next season.

Things change very dramatically in tennis, and between the top players there is such a small margin, that any slip up could change the balance of power again.

Do you really think that or is it wishful thinking?

More than just wishful thinking. It's delusional to believe that Nadal can do anything to beat Cvac. The truth is he just cannot do it,and I highly doubt anything is going to change in that match-up next year.

Couldn't have said it better myself man, that's what im saying, it won't be a total shutout like it was this year.

I don't think he is done either. We will have to see if he can remedy his situation.

Yep, eye of the tiger.

You're silly to think he isn't CAPABLE of beating Novak again. Novak looked worse than Rafa in his matches after the USO.

Personally, I think there has been a shift and I am not sure Nadal will be able to defeat Djokovic consistently any longer, it is just a sense I have, but with Nadal you can't count him out completely until the final nail is in the coffin.
We'll find out soon enough.

I just don't think he is as done as people act like he is, and he's not gonna be complacent to keep losing.
Not 'done' done. He'll still win some on clay. But not as dominant - since he can't beat Djokovic. And as this fall showed, his game just doesn't work on fast courts with light balls. Unless the powers that be slow things down, he won't win much (any?) off the red stuff without a favorable draw and luck. Sorry.

Are you sure? I'm not sure Novak could even try to lose worse than Nadal did at the WTF. 3 games against Federer???? I know Nadal isn't an indoors marvel but come on now!

The way you worded that made me . And I won't have to,anyway because there is zero chance Nadal beats Possum ever again. He still thinks going to Possum's bh over and over again is a good strategy. What does that tell you about this match-up?

Huh,my grammar goes haywire at times.I am really annoyed with this.Coming to the post,I don't think Rafa has zero chance against novak. How can we forget he's the same person who rafa beat 16 times. In tennis either you can pepper one's backhand or forehand,so arguing that he always targets his bh is a "bogus" one.How can we expect a tennis player to win a match just by targeting someone's forehand??Ofcourse novak has huge mental advantage, but I just know rafa will do well against him in 2012(again I have an inherent feeling fearing the worst).

So you think he should go to Djokovic's forehand? That's even worse. Djokovic hits cc bombs to Nadal's backhand. That's not exactly good for Nadal. Djokovic is going to find his backhand from any position on the court.
