Send your regards to the ATP, the ITF, AUS tennis, USTA, LTA, ALTEC for making the surfaces slow, the balls queer,... etc etc

Navratilova (who played doubles last week) said that this year's AUSO surface was SLOWER than the CLAYcourts she used to play on

I enjoy the long rallies. Makes the game more intense IMO. Sure the S&V matches were fun to watch, but this isn't any less entertaining.

hey, i hope you can read the content and decipher? pse dont troll this thread. appreciate it.

There are multiple threads about this now. What is there to decipher?

I did read the content and boy, talk about the sour grapes. You don't have to watch tennis any longer since Federer is losing now. Drop by in the indoor season.

Sampras loves watching Nadal and Djokovic play. He is not as close-minded as the fans he taught appreciation for the sport to.

Oh it's definitely interesting to watch a slugfest

But a slugfest's still a slugfest, not tennis.

Court was 78 ft long and 36 feet wide. Net was 3.5 feet high on the sides and 3 feet high in the center. Proper tennis scoring format was used throughout. Players did not use racquets that were over 29 inches long. No illegal stringing patterns such as "spaghetti strings" were used... That final was definitely a game of "Tennis"

letters from the 26 alphabets were used. standard rules of language were observed. unfortunately one was shakespeare's work and the other was sid the vicious's banal post.

Actually, that work was the opening post. There are 3-4 threads started by people who "appreciate the game..I mean Federer" like yourself.

OTMPut, disregard all the disrespectful jibes. I understand how you feel. This forum doesn't have any tolerance for any opinion other than 6 hr slugfests as the epitome of tennis. There is always Youtube. Best of all, if you play tennis, you know all-court tennis always works and is a pleasure to play. So keep your head up buddy...don't get too down.

I agree in a way. I sort of liked Djokovic's game a bit more when he was more attacking, but hes had to change to win. But there were times in the Djokovic Murray semi where I got frustrated with long rallies that i'd seen 20 times already. Courts need speeding up.

Djoko can play both attacking and baseline tennis. The surfaces are actually punishing players that venture forward.

Look the occasional slugFest is OK. But EVERY match? 40 shot rally on a HC, 20 shot rally on average? This isn't clay you know. Let the HCs play as they were supposed to play. Money spoils sport, period.

Of course.

Why would anyone want to watch 6 hours of great tennis when you can watch 2 ...

How about 3.5 hours of great tennis instead of 6. It's more efficient that way. Oh yeah and more winners, too, and less high-pitched, late-match grunting.

WHY wheneve someone says that today long rally tennis its boring inmediately some comes up with "S&V matches were stupid" kind of things. Nobody its saying that!there no need to go to the other end of the rope. S&V its boring as 6 hour of ball bashing, we need something in between

I'm 100% with the OP

I'm 90% with the OP. I appreciate the competitive tenacity of yesterday's opponents. It was, at times, VERY good tennis but I have to wonder what direction the overall game is headed towards if slower courts/balls remain being used. FO'11 were faster conditions than the past two weeks. That was a great tourney. Wimby'11 had some surprisingly interesting matches and results (Lacko/Lopez 5-setter with S&V) even with slow grass/balls.

The slowdown is definitely widening the gap between the elites and their chasers. This was now at least the fifth major in a row with 3 of the top 4 seeds reaching the semis (Ferrer AO'11, Tsonga Wimby'11 the only crashers). That's NOT a healthy trend. We are blessed to have three great champions competing in the same era but a surprise or two would be nice to view and would fuel the others in the second level to strive harder for the winner's circle. IMO, that is critical for the game's evolution and would be more easily achieved if conditions/balls were a bit faster.

I was hoping for Nadal declaring retirement. This would be the ideal time before Djokovic leads the head-to-head.

I think they took it too far this time. USO was awesome in length and rallies, but AO was too much.

I didn't see the difference besides it going an extra set. Had Rafa lost the 4th set, no one would be complaining. It's still "tennis" and as Djokovic said, we will see if everyone can keep up.

Well if you didn't see the difference clearly there was none? I will take your word over the players, tournament directors, and actual court pace measurements anyday. Thanks for ending all the speculation that courts have been slowed down too much.

No, there was not much difference, if anything the rallies were longer at the USO last year despite the court being faster. I completely understand how people hated how long the match was, all im saying is personally it didn't bother me, im used to it and fully expected it to take a good 4-5 hours, so one more didn't make my jaw drop.

I think the length of the matches has more to do with the endless ball bouncing and time wasting between points than the points themselves. They spend more time toweling off and scratching their crotch and bouncing the ball than they do actually playing points.

Nadal and Djokovic are the two worst offenders. Shouldn't come as a surprise, given their reputation for MTOs and other nonsense.

Hopefully Tomic continues his rapid development. At least he could balance it out if he's facing one of those guys.

I just feel like the guys were literally torturing themselves in the 5th hour and onward after hearing their grunts get louder and seeing Djokovic fall to the ground in pain. Sure they do waste some time, but that's because they have 30 shot rallies with mostly Djokovic exhausting his offensive arsenal and Nadal sliding to retrieve everything.

I think best of 3 for a Djokodal final would be better next time if they meet in another slam. lol

And how many 20-30 point rallies have you ever played against an opponent? And how long did it take you to catch your breath under the intense heat?

S&V is garbage to watch. And even if you try that crap, you just get passed anyway.

S w/o the V was "crap" to watch. Borg vs McEnroe or Edberg vs Stich was not "crap" to watch. Even Lopez vs Lacko last summer was fun to watch. Unfortunately, the powerful media chose to ignore coverage of that match, thereby keeping the uninitiated younger generation of viewers ignorant of how exciting the game of tennis used to be.

similar styles is boring to watch. Sampras / Goran was boring to watch. Sampras / Agassi was not. There is so much more dynamic to a Sampras / Agassi match than a Nadal / Djokovic match.

And how many medical time-outs they had in their 6-hour clash???

There is some truth here. Nadal and Djokovic are essentially playing the exact same game. Djoko since 2011 has looked like a mirror of Nadal's game except he's just a little bit better at it.

I agree with this. Some of the bigger servers (Sampras, Krajicek, Ivanisevic, and today Karlovic) made/make the game pretty boring in another way. Seeing ace after ace and the occasional -easy- volley due to the serve dominating so much wasn't that fun to watch either.

It would be nice to see a variety of styles at least be viable on the medium speed hard courts. Clay could still be 40 shot topspin grindfests, and fast hard is where attacking players should shine.

It's ridiculous that the best strategy for literally every surface (outside of Paris and WTF) is "play it like it's clay" now.

The days of Pete serve and volleying vs. Andre's return and baseline play was much more interesting to me, as well as the real variation of surfaces.
